This is worth! Simple and beautiful explanation which will really endeavor to try out the alapana. A creative exercise which will build our music sense stronger
Aalpap Made Easy! This videos really helps to understand the insights one need to know before doing the aalap for any ragam. The most important thing in this video about the raga lakshana will give a deeper understanding of a particular ragam and how one should make phrase around the notes. Maam has explained it so clearly and with such a deep research of herself playing and students understanding at that level. It is a very resource video not just for the beginners who are starting to learn the aalpa but also for the once who are playing for long. I always had the question while learning the aalap that where to wait? where to hold on? where to strike? which notes to land? where to give gamakam? This video answers all that for the new learner of aalap. It is a long process and the aalp wont comes that great so quickly. It is a journey not only with practicing the veena but also with our self and the raga. In this journey the understanding one needs is given in the video. In my journey of music I will keep referring to this videos of aalap time and again cause each time it will give me more inputs, each time these videos will guide me what am missing to bring the aalp more profoundly.
I loved your analogies of notes vs. family, swaras/phrases vs. letters/words. You really broke down raga alapana for beginners like me. Since watching this video, I have been asking myself several questions. Do I know my swaras? I think I know the swarasthanams. But over the past year, as you start each tutorial with the arohanam avarohanam of a ragam, I am beginning to realize there is more to a swara than simply its swarasthanam. You have taught me how to bring out the beauty of a ragam through playing its arohanam/avarohanam; I never knew playing the aro/avaro of a ragam itself could be so enjoyable. The next question I was pondering was, do I know what it means by phrases? I have started to pay more attention to phrases since learning the varnams from you. Although I have liked certain patterns of phrases as I played various compositions, I did not pay much attention to phrases before. You brought some structure to it and made me more cognizant of it. Can I put the phrases together is the next part I have to explore. Right now with all the tools you have provided, I feel like a little kid sitting with a book open in front of me, knowing my letters and words and longing to be able to read the whole book on my own and enjoy it. It is going to be a long process - it might take months/years to come up with an alapana to my satisfaction. But thanks for giving me the tools to attempt it. Reading the comments from other vainikas it is comforting to know I am not alone. There are several of us out there struggling with the concept of alapana and not knowing where to start. You have helped us all. So thankyou.
