  • The Game Boy Pocket was a smaller form factor successor to the original Game Boy that was released in the late 90's. Although it's way more portable than the original Game Boy, it also suffers from having a non-backlit screen that is difficult to enjoy. On this Fix It Friday we will update the Pocket with a modern IPS screen!

    It's a great mod, I have played mine a lot since I got it fitted. (I had to replace the screen, what you say about that provided sticky is so true) - it does very interesting things when the battery dies though.

    One thing I haven't seen people try, when doing the screen mods, is colouring the very inner edges of the plastic between the screen and lens in black.
    I think it would improve the distraction that comes with the screen gap because of the inner plastic layer. I believe it would make it feel a little bit more cinematic when viewing from an angle, cause you wont see a white strip of plastic. - A little bit similar like in the laminated ips mod, except that one has virtually zero gap between the lens and the screen.
    It has also been recommended in a certain FunnyPlaying screen kit, forgot which. But I will certainly try marking the inner edges of the plastic gap when I mod my GBP with ips!

    How do you like it compared to a backlight bivert? Im not really sure how long backlight bivert lasts vs the ips screen?

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  4 роки тому +1

      The image quality is significantly better with this modification. However, the backlight bivert is more efficient with battery life

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  4 роки тому +1

      Personally, I think the huge increase in image quality is worth the trade off of a shorter battery life

    I am having trouble with this mod. I bought the Funnyplaying IPS kit for my early non-LED Game Boy pocket and everytime I hook it up and power the console I blow the F1 fuse. I bought 3 fuses from Console5 and this Kit has blown the stock fuse plus the 2 aftermarket fuses from console5. I was told by the vendor that I may need to upgrade my F1 fuse from the 500mA to a 1A. Did you have to take this extra step on this Gameboy pocket and replace the F1 fuse? I noticed yours does not have an LED battery light just like mine and it had the early white motherboard just like mine. Thank you in advance.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  3 роки тому

      That’s a strange problem, if you revert to the original screen does it not blow the fuse? I did not need to touch the fuse on my GameBoy pocket, it is using the original stock one

    • @kevingamboa9420
      @kevingamboa9420 3 роки тому

      @@LIRetroGaming That is correct, my Gameboy Pocket is functional with the factory screen, no blown fuse. I have been trying to research if I have to do something extra and some people are saying that a voltage regulator may be needed, but yours looks line it works without it.

    • @LIRetroGaming
      @LIRetroGaming  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, you can add a separate voltage regulator for the screen. Handheld legends sells them and has a guide for the pocket. Mine doesn’t need that but others have benefited from a second regulator

      @@LIRetroGaming I’m a stuck in Michigan! Thanks for responding!
      Allow me to paint the setting…
      The year was 1997, Christmas time. All I wanted was a Red Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon Red. When I was lucky enough to open both that Christmas morning I almost cried. My family wasn’t poor but I had 5 other siblings and I rarely got expensive gifts.
      Now fast forward 7 months and it’s my birthday I was religiously playing my Gameboy in order to battle and trade at school as a 11 year old kid. I brought my Gameboy Pocket EVERYWHERE with me as a kid, my parents made me go a summer camp as a “birthday gift” and I snuck my Gameboy with a few batteries with me. One day I’m walking near the edge of the water and a group of guys came up and grabbed me and threw me into the water, not knowing I had my Gameboy in my pocket.
      I took the batteries out and didn’t turn it back on for days but had no way of opening it. I finally was deprived enough of Pokémon where I built up the courage to try and power it on. Everything was working for the most part, but the screen was now extremely sensitive to change in contrast balance. My parents refused to buy me a new one for sneaking it to camp😖. So I powered through with it like that for another few years until I got the GBA. I remember telling my parents the best Christmas present was ruined by the worst Birthday present, lol. 😂
      I recently went through a bunch of my older stuff from my parents house and pulled out the old Gameboy Pocket remembered the screen issue and went to UA-cam. This looks like a great fix and not to difficult. Sorry for the wall of text! Love the content and will keep checking the store for more inventory.

      @@LIRetroGaming Bought one!!!! Wish me luck!!!!!!!!
      Edit I just realized this may not be the problem….could it have something to do with the contrast wheel? It moves feel and still effects the screen but it’s overall out of whack.
