- Apollo Granforte (1886-1975) was a magnificient Italian baritone with one of the greatest timbres any baritone has ever had. His complete recordings of Otello and Andrea Chenier are of remarkably high quality for their time and definitely worth having. This Prologue was recorded in 1927.
Jesus! this is gorgeous!!!! 1000 times better than any baritone in the last 40 years!!!!
This is the sound of a true baritone voice.
Velvet,warmth,diction,musicality,expression.
Think of how it was to see such a man on stage and hear the sheer acoustic of such an output!
He more than lives up to his name -one of the truly great baritone voices on record.
Grand artist, in any way, completely, what a handsome powerful voice!!! Bravo, Thank U.
Who has forgotten Granforte? Everyone who knows anything about baritones at all, knows about him. Who could forget his Zaza? (Cascart)
He taught his students: "The voice must float on the breath like a cork on water". "The breath is to be understood as the bow (of the violin) that plays the vocal cords (the voice): finally the sound must be amplified in the (facial) mask which is the natural resonance apparatus. Masters Guido Capocci and Nicola Guerrera at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Buenos Aires, where he emigrated, and later Maestro Luigi Lucenti in Milan were generous in leading Apollo to such a superb artistic level.
Thank you very much Apollo, for what you give us! You will never be forgotten, you are a milestone in the history and tradition of opera.
"Forgotten?" Actually, Granforte has an outstanding reputation. He more than lives up to it here! Not only a rich, powerful voice, but an elegant, musical one! He sings with genuine feeling, without artificial sobs or exaggeration. If only more baritones were singing this way today!
No one sings this way. Non only today
Non è affatto dimenticato. Un LA bemolle potente e ben tenuto.
Io sono tenore ma sono spaccone di qst baritono....Granforte fu il più grande
He was la crème de la crème.
i grew up listening to the greatest baritones. this man of course was one of them. incredibly clean attack.
The greatest baritone of them all imo-the timbre of his voice puts me in mind of Ezio Pinza the great bass.
Bravo magnifico
MrCafiero :
One cannon ?
Granforte's A flat sounded like a whole battery shooting. Incredible voice !! And keep in mind, this recording is from 1927. Hard to imagine how big his voice would have sounded today on a digital CD ?
Thank you for posting this incredible true baritone voice.
The Ab was like a cannon shot!!!
To have the stage name, Apollo Granforte (God of music, large-voice) - you'd better be able to sing!
And of course he can. Love his singing.
Un gigante sia come voce sia come tecnica interpretativa.Stupisce in effetti anche la modernità del gusto che questo principe dei baritoni propone.
Grazie della registrazione
Perfetto, voce di un volume che oggi non si trova più e stile modernissimo
He shares the pre-Warren "Big Three" designation, along with Stracciari & Ruffo! BRAVO
An unknown singer to me before - thank you primobaritono for uploading this outstanding performance.
Amazing voice. His tone sounds so easy and powerful. He was the teacher of Jesus Quinones Ledesma, dramatic tenor.
Gran Forte indeed...
Who keeps calling these guys forgotten, jesus he is one of the greatest ever baritones, and if todays singers are not listening and learning from him then i despair, forgotten indeed!!!!!
Eccezionale.
amazing
CHE VOCE!!!!
UNBEATABLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its nice to imagine things even if they are not true... thins like it sounded like a cannon stuff like that.. so that today aren,t singers with voices like that are just stupid jokes ... he is an amazing bariton a very beautifull voice and technique but legends do exist today to !!!!
His pupil Ricardo Ledesma became one of the greatest tenors. Look for him on youtube
