Had to double check....yup, everything you mentioned is peak Lost Generation. He embodied the best of their tendency to make the best of neglected, dangerous childhoods and grow up to become charismatic musicians and lucrative businessmen.
This is not a voice that should (have been)be forgotten. It is a baritone that is clear and resonant where many baritones cover to the point of the words being "lost" or distorted beyond recognition. Why is this voice not considered when the "greats" are discussed?
Indeed! the commercial baritone greats get so much buzz, when this man's voice, style, technique and mastery are simply glorious! He should forever be mentioned at every turn, when great singing is part of a conversation.
I think he is the greatest of all In Verdi... even more impressive, less woofy than Ruffo and with more bite than Warren. And still capable of those soft mezza voce effects at the ends of phrases, as here.
Listen to the clarity of his words and the way he phrases using their meaning. Yes he had a splendid voice but above all he was an artist. He not only had a Stradivarius, he knew how to play it.

Granforte is much better than Bastianini... are people deaf or what? Bastianini had a small voice and his vowels weren't clear at all. How can someone be so clueless as to group Ruffo and Bastianini in the same category? They're totally different leagues. Ruffo is probably the GOAT while Bastianini isn't even in the top 50, or even 100. If you have a developed ear it's impossible to listen to him.

Fantastic recording. Clear phonation. I wish I could hear this sound in any singer today. Just for the sake of elucubration, after having heard this a couple of times. Bellow "A" natural his volume decreases significantly. His outstanding sound is from B flat to e flat., which is the typical phenomenon of a Verdi Baritone. The majority of his high notes are very good. The "e" (in Italian) vowels of some high notes are modified to position of "a" vowel . Which is very intelligent of his. Il balen is a very taxing aria even for Verdi Baritones and at the end I detect some tiredness. But, again, this is like every one should sing.

Wonderfully clear recording for era at a time when baritones like Ruffo Urbano Stracciari Schnulus were still active -I love Urbano's version -not the refinement or elegance of this recording but a dark baritone off immense power and charm .
He taught: "The voice must float on the breath as a cork on the water" and also " The breath is to be understood as the bow (the violin) that plays the chords (voice): finally the sound must be amplified by the mask (facial) that is the natural resonance box. His Masters Guido Capocci and Nicola Guerrera at the Conservatory of the Prensa in Buenos Aires where he emigrated, were generous in teaching him.
He is the godfather of Baritone, great solid voice, like a gigantic rock. Trained as tenor at younger age, I cannot find anything on youtube of that singing. Thank You.
Was listening to a recording from La Scala. And he sounded way lighter than here. Wonder if that's a recording that gives him this sound or maybe takes away in that recording. Or maybe he's older here? Just a thought. What do you guys think?
The record sounds half a step lower than the normal pitch this aria is performed, so it could be that the transfer was too slow, which makes the voices sound bassier. Or, in case he was actually singing it in a lower key, it would sound a bit different in any case.
@@zomgisha I just listened to Cappuccilli singing in Verdi key 432 and I tried it and it SOO much easier. Don't understand why they had raise it 440, it's way difficult for the singer.
@@andymanland i like 432 better as well, sounds more round and dark and relaxed... but the only way you're singing like that nowadays is with a piano. :)

Great voicw but no expression. All sung stentorean, authoritative booming fortissimo. The pianissimo on the low notes do not count. Anyone can do that. This aria is supposed to be of a man in love. You dont hear love here. Give me De Luca anyday
