I have watched this any number of times. What an extraordinary, unusual performance. Regardless of any criticism of this voice, Gobbi is always a storyteller. The inflection of his voice, its different effects are serving the story he is telling us. Wonderful stuff. So glad we have it on film to enjoy even after the Maestro himself is not longer with us.
It's an ugly voice which sounds beautifully colored by an infinite number of vocal inflections that allow the entirity of the piece shime brighter that with any more beautiful sounding voice.
There is a universality about this great rendition which makes it deeply moving. We are indeed all actors moving as decently as possible through society, while concealing passions and dreams reflected only in the universal language of art.

We don't hear this kind of "singing" today. This was when people did not try to sound "Operatic," but instead sang with a wonderful open and relaxed throat. The result is a beatiful ringing voice, no matter what voice type you were.
What beautiful music...My family knew Mr. Gobbi - my grandma had him sign her piano with gold paint...I saw his signature for years before I even knew who he was...

Some people say that gobbi didn't heve the most beautiful of baritone voices, but what he lacked, if anything, vocally, he more than made-up for with charisma, style and drama. After that performance, I'm inclined to agree with you. I think for acting per se, I must still go with Christopher Robson, but his was not among the greatest countertenor voices, whereas Tito Gobbi combined stage charisma with a voice of unbelievable gorgeousness. Those were the days!
The film was made in 1948, not 1946, presumably inspired by Gobbi's contribution of this same aria to the film "Mad About Opera" made earlier that same year by Mario Costa, the director of both.
Gobbi knew how to perform. Such depth of understanding in this performance, he is just brilliant. Yes fine, we all know there are better voices out there...but sometimes you just want to see an actor. BRAVO!
this is the best --and most verismo version--ive EVER heard OR seen! Free of the opera houses big stage--he was born to sing and act Verdi as we found out in his Rigoletto later and so many others even tho he gave his voice away eventually as did Ruffo and so many others. It is bizarre but wonderful--a real revelation ! I only wish my teacher/coach Enzo DellOrefice who played for Caruso & Ruffo could have seen this & we could have HIS comments--i have seen this opera with Tibbet Merril MacNeill and Warren live on the stage of the Met--and sang in the chorus there 50 yrs ago--NO comparison! Im going to watch this over & over--thank u so much for posting!!

His ability to sing bel canto high in the giro, with his vowel sound always spinning, never pushed, is amazing. And that he can alter the tembre freely as he word paints the part is unparalelled in any recording I have heard, although Callas's musicianship allowed her to display much similar effect, not that I have listened as much as some of you.

Ich habe eine DVD von einer Londoner TOSCA mit Angela Gheorgiu als Tosca,Jonas Kaufmann als Cavaradossi, und eben mit Bryn Terfel als Scarpia aus dem Jahre 2012,und schon bei dieser Aufnahme gefiel mir an ihm seine unvergleichliche Mimik beim Singen. Damals war sie sogar noch stärker ausgeprägt als in dieser Aufnahme,und damals sah er mit seinen schulterlangen Haaren,und seinem Verziehen des Mundes noch richtig furchterregend aus. Aber auch in dieser Aufnahme ist er sehr gut. Ich selbst habe ihn einmal in einer TOSCA in der Wiener Staatsoper gesehen,und da wirkte er äußerlich vergleichsweise bieder. So oder so,er ist ein phantastischer Sänger. ANDREAS BERTOLINI, BLUDENZ.
questa registrazione dice quanta espressività fuoriusciva dalla voce, viso e corpo di Gobbi..e da essa non si può che avere ulteriore conferma di quanto siano sempre chiarissime le sue parole!! egli si anima in maniera travolgente quando dice "vedrete dell'odio i tristi frutti --(e ancor più) -- del dolor gli spasimi .( fino a " e risa ciniche" )...........queste frasi sono molto sentite da questo artista e riescono a coinvolgere in maniera magica e totalmente. peccato che la registrazione sia rovinata proprio quando conclude la frase " al pari di VOI" in acuto. nelle sillabe ".vo-i Gobbi era allora assai giovane, mentre dopo diversi anni dall'inizio della sua sfolgorante carriera , ha sempre mostrato di avere difficoltà in acuto , acuti che sovente risultavano un po "fissi" e incerti. questo fatto non ha però, e giustamente, mai compromesso la grandezza del suo nome , egli è uno dei nostri baritoni più rappresentativi per la sua completezza nel cantare e nell'interpretare
This is obviously very early for him. What interests me is how is able to keep the vibrato intact throughout his range. In the most important years of his career every note above E was sung ‘con voce fissa’, and often frankly faked.
Tito Gobbi's phrasing and performance was best, but as far as vocal quality Robert Merill is my favorite by far. The high Ab is also perfect from Merill. Truthfully speaking, very few baritones have those perfect high notes.

Compare this to the massive ringing sound of Mattia Battistini singing this aria, considered the last great Bel Canto baritone by period critics.

Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, daß diesen Prolog jemand besser vortragen könnte (hätte können) als Tito Gobbi. Dies ist aber auch ein Gänsehaut bereitender, einzigartiger Auftritt. Ich finde es auch toll, daß hier bei Gobbi jederzeit das Komische ins Groteske und Unheimliche (Dieser Kopf am Anfang, im Finsteren und Leeren schwebend!) umschlagen kann. Das ist natürlich auch wundersam gefilmt. Ich glaube zu wissen, daß dieser Sänger sogar Maske und Kostüm öfters zumindest mitgestaltet hat. Bemerkenswert ist, daß der Künstler auch dem Marktschreierischen der hohen G-s und dem hohen A, die ja, düsteren, dunkleren Heldenbaritonen zuliebe, ad libitum dortstehen. Dieses - vermeidbare - hohe A ist hier gar kein schöner, sondern eher belegter, etwas heiser-schleimiger Ton. Sofort aber dient auch dies dem Ausdruck. Es wird ja auch keine Belkantooper folgen, sondern die Umsetzung eines Berichtes über ein Verbrechen aus einer Provinzzeitung. Enorm ist auch Gobbis Wandlungsfähigkeit. Der Sergeant Belcore aus dem Liebestrank beispielsweise wird vermeintlich von einem völlig anderen Menschen dargestellt.

Sì,ma quella del Golfo....Scusi la battuta,ma nel dopoguerra(quella a cui lei certamente si riferisce) ci sono stati baritoni come Silveri,Bastianini,Taddei,Protti,e molti altri negli anni a venire che hanno cantato molto meglio di Gobbi.Ovviamente Gobbi aveva una fortissima personalità ed una voce sonora(come mi hanno detto amici che l'hanno ascoltato dal vivo),ma la difficoltà nell'eseguire tessiture mediamente acute lo hanno sempre messo alla frusta.Spesso gli acuti sono duri e fissi.Ovviamente questo è il mio personale parere.

Really great, he found depths even in frequently performed pieces that others with greater voices only hinted at. This is almost frightening.
