Man, this is some good advice. So many people want to jump into bonsai making without knowing about the "keeping them alive" part ( been there too, honestly) did you use any specific additives on this stage? fertilizer?
New to bonsai. Was gifted a nursery bonsai that was in really bad shape. Inadvertently did something very similar to this because it was the only resources I had at the time and it's so cool to now know why my plant didn’t just survive, it thrived.
Thanks for the Video, gonna try that. I have a chinese elm Bonsai that i mistakenly left outside without Cold Protection during the winter. Lost all Leaves but i guessed that they would come back this summer. While a Birch i have is now full with leaves, the Elm does still not a have a single one. I scratched away some bark from a Branch and a little bit above the roots, in both cases there was still a lot of green visible. So i checked the Roots and can't see a single one that's alive. I already trimmed the Roots of it and repottet it to a way bigger pot. So far nothing much happened but it also didn't get worse. Will now buy one of those water plant basket and some Lava Rock and try your Method. Really hoping to get it back to live!
Very great tip. This is a sure way to get massive growth on a tree! I use this method when planting nursery stock for rapid growth. Leave on the ground, it grows into the ground through the holes and when ready just pull out 🙏
I did similar to this with a young rose tree that was getting root rot! It saved it beautifully, but then our Arizona summer heat killed it off for good. My fault for not providing extra water. Excited to see its a real thing that works! Thank you
You obviously have a good intuition. Yes this system does need lots of water, so a bit unlucky in those hot dry conditions. I think you could use a more organic substrate, such as 70:30 coco and perlite with an airy container in your conditions
You did a great job, it takes talent. The art of bonsai originated in China and has a history of thousands of years. I remember a Western lady cried sadly when she saw the bonsai in Suzhou many years ago. She thought it was cruel that a tree was twisted and turned into a dwarf by humans.
Thank you. In the west people put themselves into the position of the bonsai to try to understand them. “I would not like my arm cut off, so a tree also would not like to be pruned” for example.
I use a root booster from TPS Nutrients to help my plants grow roots faster and stronger, I also found it helps with plants that have sensitive roots to help prevent transplant shock even when I accidentally stabbed my moisture meter in my bougainvillea soil and felt a few roots break (for those who don't know they absolutely hate their roots being touched to the point if you repot them with their original pot will die 90% of the time)
I'm having the same problem now with my miracle berry tree. Have it already for 2 years and it was infested with somekind of beetle larva. I'm trying this trick now but I only have uncomposted coco peat. So hopefully I can still save it.
Coco has similar properties but does hold a bit more water. That may be an advantage if you can’t water as often as someone who is around all day. That said, allow it to become dry enough between waterings, but not so dry the plant wilts
Do you make a living out of doing this? Or is it a hobby? I subscribed to your channel. Because I feel like I could really learn quite a bit through your videos. Awesome content!
It's a long story, but I'm trying to! I'm in a weird stage where I'm trying to make the financial side work, but it's not quite there yet. thanks for the sub and kind words
Certainly more often than trad pots and growing mediums. But the principles are all the same - water when the plant is becoming dry, but before it wilts. That said, over watering in this setup is less likely due to the aeration
101 question please... Once in the basket, properly settled in the lava/perlite.. do i leave it in a saucer or just on the shelf, in a larger full pot...? Where do I sit it after putting it in the basket please?
Where ever is appropriate for the plant in terms of light etc. this setup does dry faster so may need watering more often, you gotta check on it more frequently
I’ve only tested on trees and shrubs. If the rose has root issues, it may help. Timing the repot is also important though. I don’t recommend doing this in mid summer on temperate species
Question❓ - Im planning to make rose tree bonsai but I live in a hot and humid climate all year long. Should I use the same basket like pot trick? I heard rose can't stand overly damp soil and the rose is still a small tree. All my previous attempt died😢 Any tips?
I use an organic pellet that has a balanced profile (5-5-5), in a paper teabag with worm castings to pump up the microbials and hold some moisture when it’s warm
Sand isn’t ideal but small pebbles will work. Sand would be ok but would fall out of the holes and wash out the pot. The best materials have some porosity and are 8th to quarter inch in size (as long as it’s not toxic to plants obv)
Worth treating will nematodes for vine weevil as the beetles will be back, vine weevils don't like course substrate so definitely don't use compost bases for bonsai 👍 the nematodes need a warmer temperature so spring and autumn are good times or in a heated greenhouse over winter
Hmmm would this work for my small citrus plant? Not bonsai just a plant. It is dormant right now, but I’m worried it won’t come back. The outside beat it up during the summer, plus I had used a bad pot. The roots don’t seem to want to dry. I cleaned out the dirt and started over. Been checking with my water meter and it’s seems to be still wet. ☹️ Still alive though, I just can’t water it. Worried it’s rotting though. Best
Potted plants have a lower cold tolerance than planted in the ground. But I’ve not found aerated pots to be noticeably less tolerant of cold temps than standard pots. That said, it feels logical that the roots are more exposed and therefore sensible to protect the plant from extremes
Hi im new to here.. I really love your work doing with this amazing bonsai trees. I recently bought a procumbens nana (i assume its called needle juniper) so basically i planted it in a big bucket not a bonsai pot. I thought it would be a good idea to give a little space to grow since its pretty small. I wired it main branch to the shape i wanted is it okay to wire tree when its young? Itsmy first attempt to do a bonsai also im 19
Hi welcome to the hobby. Sounds like a good plan, go easy with watering and it will be fine. It’s a case of letting it mostly dry (but not bone dry throughout the soil) then watering deeply. So it cycles between wet and mostly dry. Juniper need dormancy so living outside is best. Enjoy!
Yep, it's kinda tricky to discuss in YT comments. But the idea is to keep lots of oxygen in the root system, it encourages healthy roots and reduces risk of rot. The trade off is that you have to water more often, multiple times a day if it's hot
Arrrggh Vine Weevil!! Nasty creatures! What fantastic recovery though Darren, excellent work xx
They are such a pain haha thanks Becki

Not until it was growing well, then my usual fertiliser

Oh, I've never thought about using a pond basket for an air pot, but it makes a lot of sense.

I get so happy when u save plants lol its like the story of a person for me. Great job my friend 😊
So true! Its why I have no space in the garden because I keep masking new friends but can never let them go!

for large trees like frangipani I use the metal sieve or washing machine basket
this is helpful and amazing, how often do you water the plant in pon substrate?
When the substrate is becoming dry. In summer it can be twice a day or more if very hot!
ooow ,i grow and find wild bonsai ,,but i only have sand and horse compost ,,
they do very well ,,,

I use washed river sand for rhe same method. I buy a 40 kg bag from rhe hardware store for 2 dollars.
Amazing :)
Will this root growth technique work with other plants too like an indoor rose plant?

Nice One. Respect. STP.
Love the secret... its very similar to my secret 😅
Worst kept secret in bonsai
My theory is that the degradation of the organic material produced humic acids which rotted the roots and then the worms eat the dead roots.
That does make sense

Too much to say for a comment, I’ll try get a video reply done for you
Wich wire thickness do u use, and what for a dirt is a good one?
My Magnolia plant stem has died. Please suggest is there any method to recover 😢🙏🏻
What are you doing for nutrients? I've got white cedar, Western hemlock and juniper.

Hola!!! escribo desde Argentina... me dirías que es lo que le pones cm tierra?? es alguna especie de abono??
It is a type of cooked clay mined in europe
Will sand with pebbles work ?

Does removing the soil also pretty much kill any eggs or large to be however they come before they look like that? Seems like a double whammy.
Worth treating will nematodes for vine weevil as the beetles will be back, vine weevils don't like course substrate so definitely don't use compost bases for bonsai 👍 the nematodes need a warmer temperature so spring and autumn are good times or in a heated greenhouse over winter

Does it have leaves? They are evergreen so if it has no leaves it might be in trouble
Does this make a tree more prune to freeze ?

It is a Potentilla fruticosa ‘Pink Beauty’

I find it funny how fabric pots exist, yet no one knows about them.
So that's what they are Called!!! I gave organic soil to my Double delight to increase flowering and growth. And these things destroyed my plant 😢
👍👍👍👍
Does this work with a weed plant?
Asking for a friend😂
Similar principle to the air pruning fabric pots but the substrate would dry hella quick unless it’s a hydro setup (so I’m told)
Diatomaceous earth?
Wellllllll moler clay is often called diatomaceous earth, and it contains a majority DE, but is not only DE
