Perfect timing. Bought a lovely $200 ficus a couple weeks ago, got married, went on a honeymoon, and didn't water it enough. 😛 All the leaves are drying up and falling off. Will try this tomorrow!
Thank you for giving me hope! My 50 year old ficus benjamina got too cold and appears to be a goner! I'm going to try to revive it using your method. It's lived and moved with me since 1972.
Thank you so much, mine couldn't handle the heatwave which I had even I did gave it a good amount of watering, I'll be doing this method tomorrow as it is the day when I give it bonsai food
I've used the bark scratching thing in the past and I found it's not always a good indication of whether or not the tree will survive. Sometimes you see green cambium one week and then it turns brown the next :( . Glad to see you managed to save them! 👍
Hi! You are right, that can change for one week to the next. At least you know if you should even try to safe the tree with this method when you do see green.
Really needed this. My ficus microcarpa is doing so bad. I've never seen a tree at such a bad state. Hope with God's will, I'll be able to save this tree.
@speedstr yes, but I didn't cut off the dying buds as shown in the video. It made a comeback on its own. I initially had it indoor, on the balcony, and the temperature drastically dropped which caused the problem. Later had it outdoor under full sunlight (6 hours) and it made a great recovery.
Thank you for this great video! I am gonna try to pamper my little ficus more. I was wondering, do I also have to remove the branches that look green? I assume those ones are ok ?
I pruned the dry dark branches on my tree I really hope this works! My tree also wiggles around very easily haha I really hope this works thanks for the help! :)

Hi Jerome, thanks for the tip. I have the same problem with my fig trees. The winter was quite cold after all. I was told that the trees are hardy ... but unfortunately that was probably not quite right. The trees are just starting to get back very small buds on the healthy wood. I should have cut back the brown branches much earlier. I will do it right away. Probably they would have recovered faster if I had done it right away. LG from Germany your fan Stefan
Thank you Stefan! Ficus trees aren't cold hardy, they don't do well below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Just take it easy with them now and let them take their time to recover.
Awesome insight! I have a few questions; What season of the year was the pruning done in this video? Can I perform a similar treatment indoors with growing lights to ficus bonsais? I live in an area where winters go well below freezing for months at a time So giving my trees exterior sunlight is not possible during winter. Any recommendations?
I planted my bonsai willow in bonsai soil (removed it as a stem from the water I kept it in) the leaves began to droop and die … I removed the leaves, now the steams are getting dark, is there anything I can do to save?
Excellent video ❤️...can you tell me how to save an adenium as my small plant has stopped growing and trunk at bottom feels little soft.. i have watered it well thinking its lacking in water bt still no growth
We have a focus microcarpa ginseng plant from ikea. It is dropping a lot of leaves. It’s on a dining table. Is direct sunlight or indirect sunlight better. It’s near a east window so it gets some direct light in the AM then indirect most of the rest of the day. They are turning brown, curling up and dropping off
Could you do a video on azaleas, please? I was given one as a gift and have very little experience with azaleas. I live in Southwest Florida and it is getting up to 90 degrees now and little rain but very humid. It is hot hot hot.

small bonzai branches where all the leaves have fallen off ? What to do with branches. Cutt them off- or will new leaves grow on these branches ? Plz. help..
I've got a gardenia bonsai I mistakenly bought from 1800Flowers, I cancelled the order and it showed up anyways. I bought a much better tree from Brussels Bonsai, and that one is doing well. The one from 1800Flowers came from CA and understandably they drenched it before shipping. I get that they wanted it to be watered for a few days while it travels to the east coast. Well the problem with that is I got a fungus issue right off the bat. I've been battling it daily for about 2 months with neem oil and am starting to see leaves without fungus. However most of the leaves have fallen off. I'm wondering if I should do a similar thing to what you did here, and just snip everything clean to rid the tree of any more potential fungus. It just seems it's best to nip off all the leaves and let it grow back fresh.
Hi, I have a very overgrown ficus ginseng plant that I recently repotted. First I gave the roots a big “haircut” however, on advice from another channel. I think I cut it back too much… anyway now the leaves are quickly turning yellow and falling off, and some branches have shriveled green leaves. Did I just overwater? Or did I possibly kill the roots? I’m sad bc I’ve had this tree for 7 years! 😢
Hi Jerome, I am trying to save my bonsai. It is green after scraping the branch. No sure what type of bonsai. Did you say to water it and put it in sun? It has been on my covered patio which has filtered light. Hoping you can help me save this tree. Penni from So. FL.
I should have watched this before re-potting my little ficus bonsai after all its leaves fell out. I thought it's cuz of bad soil :( It was already too small to begin with. Doesn't even have any branches as such. I don't know if I should cut anything off of it now. I saw some new leaves on it a couple of weeks ago so I kept it in the sun, and that made those new leaves fall off. So I brought it back inside. Not sure what to do with it or if it'll come back to life at all.

Hi Edwin! WE have been letting them dry out completely and then water them, and let them dry out again. Now that they have a green canopy and are actively growing again we are watering more frequently!
