Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards) tells Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) and Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) to run the story about Mitchell.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Conspiracy film specialist Alan J. Pakula turned journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's best-selling account of their Watergate investigation into one of the hit films of Bicentennial year 1976. While researching a story about a botched 1972 burglary of Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex, green Washington Post reporters/rivals Woodward (Robert Redford, who also exec produced) and Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) stumble on a possible connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. With the circumspect approval of executive editor Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards), the pair digs deeper. Aided by a guilt-ridden turncoat bookkeeper (Jane Alexander) and the vital if cryptic guidance of Woodward's mystery source, Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), Woodward and Bernstein "follow the money" all the way to the top of the Nixon administration. Despite Deep Throat's warnings that their lives are in danger, and the reluctance of older Post editors, Woodward and Bernstein are determined to get out the story of the crime and its presidential cover-up. Once Bradlee is convinced, the final teletype impassively taps out the historically explosive results.

I love Tom Hanks but Robards is, was, and always will be the best on screen Ben Bradlee.
M E apparently he was so good in that movie that Bradley himself started acting like Robards afterwards.

I really liked Robards in "Crimson Tide." It was a collection of three of my favorite actors in one scene.
That little desk tap and palm punch are amazing. The guy was a grizzled vet but still felt the rush of breaking the big story, especially one that'd zing that bastard Nixon.
I remember reading an interview somewhere (think it was Woodward) saying that was absolutely an accurate piece of body language from the real Ben Bradlee.
I believe that rush you’re describing is “hungry.” I would be too if I heard that.
wanted to rewatch this particular scene after seeing The Post. Sorry Tom but Jason Robards' Ben Bradlee is soooo much better. "Run That Baby" and that tap on the desk on his way out. Perfection.
If that’s impressive to you, not only is that corny af, but you’re conclusion [on two completely different portrayals, btw] is based entirely on personal preference and literally not one iota on merit. Believe it or not, a universe exists whereby Robards did a wonderful job with his Bradley and Hanks simultaneously did an equally wonderful job with his.
I agree--for me, there's only one Ben Bradlee, and it's Robards. There are a couple scenes where he just intimidates Woodstein into silence. Robards has a big presence.
@@alexayers9463 Tom’s portrayal of Bradlee was nothing like the real Bradlee. Jason Robards on the other hand was so good that the real Bradlee started to act like his version of himself

Apparently, Robards drinking problem had been detrimental to his career by 1975. He was always Redford's choice but many other actors were considered for the role. He was offered $50,000 and won the Oscar for his portrayal. A recovering alcoholic, Robards campaigned for alcohol awareness. A great actor.
He was amazing in Once Upon A Time in the West.
@@leftcoaster67Cheyenne was my favorite character. He was also great as Al Capone in The St Valentines Day massacre and as Wayne Williams lawyer in the Atlanta Child Murders film. An all-around great actor.
That story and that movie got me into the newspaper business, along with just about everybody else in my generation.

A friend of mine called the Bloomington public library during the early 1990s, and asked them a reference question. I'm sure it was some fact of history or science. The librarian retrieved the info, and asked him why he'd thought to call a library. He said, because all librarians watched the movie Desk Set (with Katherine Hepburn as the hyper-efficient reference librarian). The librarian started laughing, and when Tony asked her what was funny, she said, "I'm a library sciences major, and that's my favorite movie."

If I was ever a newspaper executive I wouldn't necessarily want to be Ben Bradlee, but I'd definitely want to be Ben Bradlee as played by Jason Robards.
Walking through the near-empty newsroom late in the evening. I did it hundreds of times. I didn’t work for The Post, but my paper was big enough to be important. There was a feeling, a life, a karma in most newsrooms like none other, and this film captures it perfectly. I miss it so much.
I love the lack of music in this movie.
I feel like The Post overdid it with score telling you how to feel.
The music that is used in this film is perfect. Rather haunting.

Bradlee telling W & B the LBJ story comes much later in the book, in the second half of the book which the movie doesn't cover. Apparently someone thought it was a good enough story that they wanted it in the movie, so they moved it up a year prior to when he actually told them about it. In real life and in the book the reason he told them the LBJ story was is a bit better context of events at that time than it was in the movie, but it's still a good scene.
Funny about Hoover because he died in May of 1972, about 6 weeks before the Watergate break-in. So, he would have been recently deceased at the time this conversation would have taken place. Always wonder how the Watergate mess would have turned out had he lived. My guess is that it would never have even happened if he had heard about it beforehand. He was the one who put the kibosh on the Huston Plan in 1971, which was going to involve opening certain people’s mail and other violations of privacy laws.

@Nature and Physics Good question. Did Bradlee actually thump a desk, or was that a Robards move? But, regardless, I like to think Bradlee was happy for the decision he made.

Interestingly, if you look and listen closely you can tell that line was dubbed in afterward. I wonder if that was added in to make sure the audience understood that Bradlee was approving the story.

After Hoover's death, Mark Felt was passed over to run the FBI; to pay back Nixon for giving the job to a campaign donor, Felt became "Deep Throat".

Jason Robards as ben Bradley. It doesn't get any better than this on film. Though I have never met Mr. Bradley nor read much about him, I sense Robards nailed his character. To me he was the highlight of this film.

When news reporting had merit. Today, half of America doesn't want or care for the truth. We're in some deep doodoo.
Publishers don't care about facts. They push the Editors to have slants (Which is not facts) Which leads to sloppy, and soundbite reporting. Reporters just instead of taking sides, they just let the story write itself. Sadly that's almost gone.
And I have no doubt Lyndon Johnson said that
This makes Ben remember the chaos and the purpose of journalism when he & Katie Graham took on the White House over the Pentagon Papers. Ironically, that happened right before this and he was bound to make sure the truth was heard. He took a hell of a risk then like he did with Woodward & Bernstein. They both paid off.

Was Bradlee really a reporter at the time of Hoover's lifetime installment as head of the the F.B.I.?
The reason why I ask this is because Bradlee was very good friends with J.F.K during his presidency and if true it is rather impressive that a president would allow access and insight to merely just a reporter.
Perhaps Bradlee was more than that. Perhaps because of this, is how he elevated to his position with the Washington Post.

Journalism is such a joke now. The whole movie hangs on trying to get multiple confirmations from good sources to print a story. Now they just print it, and run a retraction later

The acting in this movie was top-notch, but Jason Robards' acting brought it all together, they said he could have been Ben Bradley's twin in his looks and mannerisms and voice.
How much can you tell me about Deep Throat. I bet even Ben Bradlee would be shocked to learn it was the #2 guy at the FBI
To be fair, Hoover was chosen before the Great Depression to head the predecessor to the FBI and died under Johnson's successor.
I wonder if Robards came up with the gestures as he walks away or they came from the director or writer. Perfectly caps off the scene for me.
The studio in Burbank California really did look like the Washington Post newsroom circ 1972. Exact detail in every way.
Heck even in the making of the movie Ben Bradlee even says that his daughter who was 15 years old was dumbfounded at how accurate it was she even put her coat in the same chair in her father’s office and went over to somebody else’s desk and said the name is wrong but that was the only thing that was wrong

Here’s this guy, still wearing his tux from some DC power elite event, getting in the muck of what he really loves with these 2 brave reporters. Great performance. BTW, Jason Robards was one of only 3 Oscar-winning actors who pre-deceased the characters that they portrayed.

LBJ screwed BB because BB was a close friend of Jack Kennedy.
There are many possible additional reasons including a desire to cozy up to Hoover and a general nastiness.

BB is with JFK in the videos taken the last weekend JFK spent at the new home JFK and Jackie built in Middleburg, VA. He was assassinated two weeks later. Sad to watch seeing how young, vibrant and full of hope everyone was. JFK absolutely loving his life. Jackie stunningly beautiful riding her horse. Kids running everywhere. JFK and BB sitting around having a great time. Bb never got over losing his friend….

This is a great film, particularly on account of Robards. But I still admire President Nixon and have very mixed feelings about Watergate and its consequences for the US.
I'm a Boomer who watched the 1968 presidential campaign, watched Nixon come back from his supposed political exile, watched his first 4 years, watched the first whiffs of Watergate to Nixon's resignation. I've learned even more about what he did In office and what others did for him. I loathed him in 1968 and I still loathe him. He got off too easy. He should have been the first president to be indicted and convicted of crimes. There's little to admire. Quite the opposite.
