a documentary about the making of All the President's men where everybody talks about the story and how they made the movie, except the screenwriter William Goldman, who won an Oscar for his script. It says a lot about how screenwriters - no matter how great - are considered in this business.
There's another side to that story. I loved the film so much I bought a copy of William Goldman's published screenplay and discovered how little of it was used in the final film. That's when I learned how disappointed Redford & the director were with what he'd written and cobbled together a script using Woodward & Bernstein's notes. The case eventually went to the Writers Guild, who sided with Goldman; as a result, he retained screen credit. But as an impartial observer, I can only say Goldman's published script bears little resemblance to the excellent film that finally emerged.
If you read William Goldman's memoir, he talks about how he & Redford had a falling out during the make of this movie. It's actually pretty sad because Redford & Goldman had been really good friends. Their families socialized together. Their kids grew up together. What happen was Carl Bernstein had voluntarily written his own script & submitted it to Redford (who was also the producer), even though they had already hired Goldman. Redford then called a meeting with Bernstein & Goldman & asked Goldman if he would read Bernstein's script & try to incorporate it into the already existing script. For some reason, Goldman saw this as a betrayal on Redford's part & it ended their friendship.

It's kind of amusing because in Goldman's memoir, he states that the only thing added in the film that wasn't in his script was the scene where Bernstein tricked a secretary in order to get into the office of the Dade County D.A. But if you listen to Robert Redford's commentary on the DVD, HE claims that the only thing Goldman wrote that was in the movie was the scene where Bradley admonishes Woodward & Bernstein at the end on Ben Bradley's front lawn. I always figured the truth was somewhere in the middle of both claims.
I was born in '69. Some of the greatest movies I watched growing up were from the seventies. Movies that will be cherished forever. Redford and Hoffman in their prime. Great stuff.

I have to say, journalism is dead, especially after watching this. Woodward said they were afraid a few times their career would be over because they were wrong. Wow journalists don’t worry about that today do they?
Helped clarify their analysis of the CREEP document and whose office was next to Mitchell's by way of phone extensions. The movie glossed over this and made it hard to follow at that juncture- what they were looking at and searching to find.
The Library of Congress dome scene is graphically imposing and does represent Woodstein’s smallness in the face of overwhelming adversity. My only observation is that the impressive cinematography of the scene doesn’t align with the insignificance of chasing the dead end lead of Howard Hunt’s call slips.
I'm in the Australian media. I worked for a day with Carl Bernstein when he visited Australia to promote his new book about Hillary Clinton, circa 2007... it was ages ago, but I distinctly remember the experience. Great days!

@@helenamcclenaghan5726 Jason Robards was perfect as Ben Bradlee, but as great as Redford and Hoffman are, they looked and sounded nothing like Woodward and Bernstein. Tarantino would ruin it, but it would be nice to see a remake with two actors who can approximate, if not absolutely nail, the Chicago and Maryland accents.
@@FortyNineHudson do they really need to look and sound like them to give a great performance? There has been some cases where the actor looked exactly the spitting image of the person he’s playing but was nothing like the real person. Imo it all depends on the writing and acting, and despite not looking like them Redford and Hoffman did a great job. And of course let’s not forget Jason Robards who didn’t look like Bradlee but he sounded and acted like Bradlee and won a well deserved Oscar for it
