"Nothing is riding on this except the First Amendment of the Constitution, freedom of the press, and quite possibly, the future of the country." His best scene. The best movie line.
When they tell Bradlee his house and phone might be bugged, he started to realize the scope of the situation. It must have been a disturbing moment! This movie does what few films can accomplish. By relating a story where everyone already knows the ending, they created a fascinating true crime drama.
Except according to W & B this scene didn't happen in real life. It's one of several fictional scenes in the movie that were written just for dramatic effect. Other examples - the scene where they ask a female reporter to contact her ex boyfriend to get a list of employees of Nixon's re-election committee, that never happened. Also fictional is the scene where Bernstein uses a fake phone call to trick the secretary of the guy in Miami into leaving her desk so he can slip past her. There are a lot of interviews of W & B and other info online that discuss and compare what's in the movie versus what really happened.
Woodward said that last bit was pure Hollywood. What Bradlee really said after Woodward remarked “Everyone’s involved” was “What do we do now?” Maybe not as dramatic as the script but in the moment definitely more haunting.
Yes. This scene is one of several in the movie that didn't happen in real life and were added only to give the story more tension. According to the W & B (and others) interviews I've read and watched, any suggestion that their lives may have been "in danger" weren't taken seriously at the time.
Jason Robards won Best Supporting Oscar in 1977 for his portrayal of Ben Bradlee. He won the next year, same category for " Julia. " He had a gorgeous deep gravelly voice.
@@novembermiss, it's time for the Vatican to stop allowing solitude between clergymen and the youth. Plus, parents should never let their kids be with strangers.
I did think this scene was a little "over the top". By this time the reporters were too well known to "off" them and, even if it did happen, the story now had a life of its own and the Nixon administration was going down. But I loved the movie!
Robards reminds me of John Malkovich in that he had leading man acting talents, he just didn’t have the leading man looks to go with it. But he was a sensational actor and very underrated.
Reporters AND "whistleblowers"( in all fields) who will settle for nothing short of "DOING THE RIGHT THING" are still out here. Just a matter of time until they win out. People do risk their careers....and possibly their lives: BUT one also has to make a choice about carrying the weight of NOT "Doing the right thing.......FOREVER". For people of high moral character: that is just too big of a burden to bear. I guarantee you: somewhere "somebody" is wrestling with their conscience.........and the TRUTH WILL OUT.
Woodward has become too establishment, too comfortable with wealth and fame. Bernstein still has some fire in his belly, but he's too old to do the kind of reporting we need. If those three were in their prime today, Trump would really have something to worry about.
Trump should be seriously worried still. There are plenty of journalists with integrity trying to get to the bottom of Trumps obstruction of justice, collusion, and white collar crimes.

Yeah I kind of like the real answer better but I think the one they used was probably better for the movie. “What do we do now” says a lot about Bradlee and the why he was so such a successful editor, but for whatever reason I can’t see Robards as Bradlee saying it. Weird because if you know the real characters in the story as well as those that played them in the movie, in the case of Bradlee, you can almost think of him as two people. Maybe it’s just me but Robards just captured the role so well. Holbrook as Deep Throat was great as well.
In real life, according to the people who were there at the time, there was only one point when the Post got paranoid about that sort of thing and paid a company $5k ($35,000 in 2023 money) to come in and sweep for bugs and wire taps. Nothing was found and afterward they felt silly about it.
Nixon's involvement in Watergate, President Kennedy's assination and Trump's attempted insurrection that January sixth. These are the crimes that we must learn from.
Jason Robards is one of the great unsung actors of his generation. Hearing the way phrased that even now is spine chilling.
I would disagree on the "unsung" part. Robards won an academy award (best supporting actor) for his role as Ben Bradlee.
Ken H … and another Academy Award for “Julia” the following year … and a Tony … and an Emmy …
I’ve enjoyed his performance and everything he’s ever done. Great actor.

This film also accomplished exactly what you say at a time when the whole country was sick to death of everything Watergate.

He was magnificent in this role. Practically did Ben Bradlee better than the man himself
1:05 that is the single greatest breathe ever taken on film
100 percent/ One of my favorite scenes of all time.
The pause before Robards last words is thrilling.

the lighting in this movie was top notch
3 Great Actors in a real good scene.
R.I.P Ben Bradlee
I got to meet Ben Bradlee twice, separated by several decades, and Robards couldn’t have been a better choice to play him.
He was a great actor.
Goddamn Ben B. was a badass.
he was a JFK puppet
Best scene Jason Robards ever shot.
