    "Εμβατήριο Σμύρνης" is a Greek march dedicated to the city of Smyrna, now called Izmir in Turkey.
    I do not represent any of the ideologies, countries, or religions shown on this channel. No matter if we agree or disagree, it is still important to document the songs of every ideology, country, and religion.

    Interesting that they march in a similar act to the British style and that their bands look similar to those of the Royal Marines.

      A lot of modern Greek military traditions have their roots on western armies, particularly Britain and France. This is especially true for the Special Forces

      @@toast2300 shame. The British and French are not as militarily disciplined as the Germans or Russians. The German goose step and the Russian hand swing would look great with the Greek army.

      @@billkar6479 well, we took from our stronger allies. For Greece, a maritime nation, it was only natural to ally with Britain, so we were influenced by them. However 1 thing I will admit, Russian marches are way cooler these ones

      Well the march it self was composed by a greek from smyrna and it is based on traditional wedding marches that are similar to the tune of the march and are/were used for weddings from Central Macedonia and Thessaloniki, to the northern Aegean islands, to Ionia (western coast of Asia Minor, especially Smyrna), the Dodecanese and Cyprus.

    Actually it is the British army that is marching like the Greek army because the Greek armies go back 4,000 years compared to barely 1,000 years for the British army.

    As far as i know this melody is originally an ottoman march called "Izmir marsi" in Turkish.

    They lost the city to the Turkish about 700 years ago and before that to the Italians (,Romans) 1100-1200 years, that's like 1900 years, I admire your patience but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you, especially if you are still marching to a music written by a turk

      @@NRooster but i think that march was composed by Zahariadis and was very popular among the greeks of smyrna years before the destruction of the hellinism of the asia minor and the expulsion of the greek majority of the city. For example there are recordings of this march by a greek band of smyrna called estoudiantina and was recorded in the first decade of the 20th century and was alao used by some historic athletic clubs of smyrna that after 1922 and until now are based in athens, such as Apollon Smyrna and Panionios G.C. of Smyrna.

      Brother , I am from Izmir.I love Greece and history.But all historical records even for French, Italian consulates in İzmir at Ottoman times prove that Greek population was always in minority.Only after earthquake in Chios island many immigrants moved to İzmir and it's environs. Even in 1919 Greeks were not majority.That doesnt mean Izmir has no Hellenic roots.But denying Turkish culture in Izmir is not fair.You should come and see the construction date of mosques in city.
      That already prove that Turkish settlements date very old spread in all around the city.

      @@sypenks that applies to many cities, Istanbul (mama Greece isn't proud of me right now), Trabzon, Kayseri (I think that's how you write it) etc. Used to be ours, now it's yours. It doesn't mean that it wasn't at some point ours but that was the past, not the present...
