When I first got my Rummy-Nose Tetras, the LFS netted them and they were scared and he chased them unmercifully. I felt sorry for them and promised to give them a happy home with no more netting and moving them. During quarantine, 1 died but the others have remained healthy for almost 2 years now. I love these fish.
About a month ago I bought a school of 30 wild caught here in Colombia. Just like you said they were totally silver in the store, I was a bit hesitant but did it anyways. Got the home and dropped them in quarantined they colored up immediately. Month later , I love these guys they school all the time and they are veracious eaters. Awesome addition to my wild caught S.American tank. BTW I think here in Medellin they were about $1 USD a piece
I love these practical "real-world" care guides! I'm less interested in their wild habitat and breeding habits than the practical advice on how to keep them happy and healthy at home.
i actually love both, as long as one doesnt overshadows the others, and i do think that real world care guides are way better for the average viewer and beginner.
Have 6 mixed in with ember tetras. Interesting point about buying the full group you want, all at once, to avoid the possibility of introducing illness multiple times. I find myself wanting to get the minimum group then adding to them periodically because who doesn’t enjoy another trip to the lfs store. I can satisfy the “I really wanna get some fish urge” by slowly adding to the school. Cool video and great tips as usual.
I really love this type of video. Such beautiful footage with excellent info that is delivered in a manner that everyone can appreciate 🤗 Thank you so much.
Look out for their tail fins too. The black markings will fade when they are stressed. That's when I saw a lot of the playing dead behavior you mentioned. I never knew it was a normal behavior, I thought something was really REALLY wrong at that time, but I have some in my main tank for almost 2 years now.
I noticed that when I brought some home from the store. They were so vibrant but inside the plastic bag they looked almost completely silver. Now swimming around in their little quarantine tank, they have perked back up and are nice and colorful again.
Out of all the species of tetras that I have owned, I've never had rummynose tetras... I have almost pulled the trigger a few times... I generally buy 13 at a time, maybe this year... Thanks again Cory and gang for your awesomeness...! Keep it up...!
This video gives me a little encouragement to try these fish. I fell in love with them but all the blogs said they were intermediate and I'm only a year into the hobby so still very new. I am upgrading to a 30 gallon tank and was thinking of adding them with my cherry barbs. If not, I was willing to look at diamond tetras. Our store keeps the diamonds and rummies together and they're both adorable.
You are absolutely right about their colours! I got home from Vivarium yesterday where I bought two bags of tetras from a big breeder. His stand was absolutely swamped with customers and I asked for 2 bags of silver tips, but I think in the rustle one bag got mixed up so I got 7 silver tips and 7 rummynoses. And I reckon the fish were quite stressed but I got them into the quarantine tank once I got home. Now is the next day and their heads are nicely red!🙂And they're schooling with the silver tips!😊

Rummy nose tetras’ are one of my favorite fish. Unfortunately I had a bad experience at my LFS, there was ick in their tank and I didn’t notice it and ended up bringing it to my main display tank. I would highly recommend the quarantine trio and temp around 80. I definitely plan on having them in the future.
I absolutely love your care guides. When ever I’m looking to buy a new fish I always go for you care guide and go off of that. Could you guys make a Amazon puffer care guide?
I have 10 of these guys in my 20 gallon planted. Easily one of my favorite tetras. They do much better in a well established tank, at least 6 months running. When I first put them in they were really stressed and colorless, then bam! 2 days later, their faces had colored up. After watching this video, I feel like loading some brine shrimp eggs for hatching today so I can spoil my red nose bois tommorow.
This is really helpful with the established comment!:) I have 5 African Dwarf Frogs and a Bristlenose in my 29 gallon bowfront planted , you think Id be okay with a school of 10 or so when my tank is a bit more established?
Hi Cory, greetings from Germany! Rummynose tetras are fantastic fish, not only why they are schooling. And I agree, you should keep at least 10 of them. These fish only prefer cristal clear water and your aquarium must be matured and perfectly cycled. If the water is cristal clear, no problem occur. I keep them together with blue-red Colombian tetras.
Great guide. Can you make a list of "inquisitive" fish to keep? I like fish that actually interact with their environment rather than just swimming back and forth.
i got 15 from the LFS near me and they have been the stars of my planted setup. Very vibrant friends and quite bold in a group. i have em with stiphodon gobies and some mixed amano and what i think are ghost shrimp as well as ramshorn's. Good luck so far.
I just bought 6 of them for my 20 gallon down at The Wet Spot in Portland today. Boy that place is fun to go to and check out the fish. I love their red heads and how they move together like a flock of birds. That’s just what my tank was missing.
I have kept these for years and watching them at the fish store and proper quarantine is key. I learned it when I bought a dozen to boost the numbers I had. I have had 5 die of disease and I didn't quarantine. Let's say I have a quarantine tank now.
I bought 15 from my LFS and never had issues with the store. Well I brought them home temp acclimated and then I realized after I put them in that my heater was busted so it was approx 65-68 degrees! They all got Ich but thankfully I dosed trio of meds (Probably couldve just done Ich-x but better safe than sorry). Anyway they all made it and were cured! They quickly became one of my favorite fish its truly amazing how they school and they are beautiful.
One of my favorite tetras but all my local spots when't out of business due to the pandemic 😔. I have a PetSmart near me & they never have enough to create a school, not to mention the 15$ a pop. $150 for# 10 no thanks. I would rather have Cardinal tetras & keep the change. I've had bad luck ordering online in the past. The seller made things right & it's almost always been the couriers fought. To much death rate in my orders. beautiful fish IMO & great vid 🎬👍. salute 😎✌️
Love my rummynose! Such an active fish. To anyone out here wondering, yes the nose color is very reactive and will shift in color once there is a source of stress, I have seen it happen.
Hello, I want to thank you for all the advice to make my life easier and my fish's lives better; I was using a fishbowl when I first got given my fish because I wasn't expecting them and it's all I had (they were taken out of the local pond because they are an 'invasive species' (I *still* don't know what they are). It soon got upgraded to a 3 gallon tank but they grew so after an embarrassingly long time I got a 10 gallon. I can't go bigger as I have *very* limited space but I will upgrade again as soon as possible. Thank you!
I just love them ... I have got 60 of them in my 90 gallon tank ... Love to see them schooling together... I feed them hikari micro pallets and they just go gaga over it !
Have you seen the diamond back rummy nose? Got a 50 gallon aquarium planned and have been considering a big school of 40 - 50 rummy nose. They definitely prefer ph in the low 7's. My water was high 7s in my community tank, when i rescaped and added aqua soil and more wood the ph dropped to low 7s and the colour of the rummy nose really improved, they also gained wait and grew in size.
New to the hobby and got my 1st 4 fish...they are red eye tetras, but yesterday all the red was very pale..called the store and she said they probably arent going to make it. ...did a very small water change as she suggested but she said thats all i could do but she said dont feed them for a day or so. The red seems to be coming back and i was so excited but i saw a white dot behind their dorsal fins right before the tail...i frantically ordered 3 bottles of ick treatment and paid to have it overnighted to get here tomorrow...then looked up pictures of adult red eyes and noticed they all seemed to have that small white spot in the same place...i think my ignorance may have cost me a large overnight fee....oh i dont drive so i couldnt get to the store today. Other than that I love the fish and even though these werent on my list of what i wanted, i kept coming back to look at them before i decided on what to get...i think theyre so cute
I had a hard time finding them near home. Ordered 12 from Aqua Huna last month. Moved them from quarantine to home tank last week. All 12 still alive and kicking. Getting them netted from quarantine was hard. Fastest fish I’ve kept so far. And some definitely tried to play dead as the net finally cornered them.
I’ve never had these and kept hearing about how great they are. So, of course, when I went looking for them I couldn’t find any. I got a dozen red eyed tetra in the end.
I bought 6 of these guys from Aqua Huna a couple weeks ago. You're right they had zero color when I opened the box but shortly after I added them to the tank their color was up and they were eating. They are very fun to watch and the betta leaves them alone while they school about the tank.
May I ask what size tank you have? Been wanting a Betta and I have 10 gallon I’m trying to figure out what to stock with. Is 10 gallon too small for a school of the runny nose tetras?
Hi love your video I learn a lot, can you make a video about how to take care newborn fish and how to change water? I have a hard time finding good video about newborn fish. Last night I found 1 baby fish pop out in my tank
Heya Cory, I need one of these videos for electric blue rams. For some weird reason I can't make them live more than a week in my tanks. And they are the only ones dieing. I have swordtails (dif tank), angelfish, discus, tetra neons, white cloud minnows, corys, and they are all fine, but rams? No sir.
Hello Cory, thanks for this great video! I just got a school of 6 rummynose tetras in a community tank with a Black Samurai Betta and 10 Cardinal tetras.... It is a 15 g tank and somehow I notice that these tetras does NOT swing all around...they have this trend to stay at the bottom of the tank + dont explore all the plants nor the hidden spots. Should I be concerned ? Water parameters are in line and water temp stable. Any advice from you or your followers would be appreciated! Greetings from Toronto! Thanks
I have 8 rummynose tetras in a 75 gallon and I love them! I was wondering if they would do okay with a blue/opaline gourami? I would add probably another 8 rummies first and it’s probably going to be another few months to a year at least but this video came up now and I’ve been thinking about it for a while!
Good afternoon everyone! Im going to set up a 65 gal planted tank with about 50 rummy nose tetras, Im looking for ideas on a center piece fish that will chase the tetras every once in a while to keep them schooling, Angels was my first thought, but I've done angels before and was wondering if you have any recommendations about 5-6 inch
I kept these, and I love them, too bad they were all diseased. When the time comes when I get back into the hobby, I will make sure if I'm getting these to get them from a place that can keep them happy.
i know the fish at my local petsmart are usually brought in pretty young and always stressed out, not because of the care but mostly because of people walking up to their tanks all day shoving their hands and face against the glass and with the turn around these fish might have less then 48 hours to adjust to the tank at the store while there are bright lights and intrusive people, some petstores are just not a good environment for fish
Amazing, beautiful fish...but they are fin nippers! They like to hit the fins on my Blue-eyed Bristlenose and Garra Panda when those fish hold up on the front of the glass. When they ship these guys why do they ram 100 into a bag. Lots of scaling problems?
I love the way they school, but mine are so dumb tho. I lost 7 of them last week, they were in a temporary tank while I was re-scaping/-cycling their own tank. They squeeze themselves into tight spaces (between a wall and filter floss) and then they die because they got stuck.
I tried finding RNTs but no one has them in my area or in Dallas. I was able to get 7 locally but they were super young and they all ended up dying. For now I have 18 red eye tetras in my 40 gallon with some otos and corys and 1 king betta but I would like to add rummy nose to this tank or another one in the future.
Not sure where you are in Dallas but I’ve seen them fairly recently at Dallas North Aquarium and Odyssey Pets. Both of those places are nice about calling to check stock before driving out there.
@@Tex_155 I contacted DNA the other day and they said they were out and would let me know if they get any in. I'm actually out here in Tyler, so calling a bunch of stores or driving 2 hours and then going all over town is just not very appealing to me lol but maybe one weekend
I have 8 in a 29g with 6 corys and two dwarf gouramis and they are doing great in there, very active and feeding very well adding lots of activity to my tank, i keep one side of my tank heavily planted and the other half with minimal plants and decor
@@SlickNick3 i could probably push it up to 10 in my current set up but wouldnt want to add more without adding more filtration, if you were looking at just rummynose on their own you could probably get 15-20 in a 29g tank especially if your filter is filtering 155+g an hour
@@lruddy8820 I also have a group of 11 cardinal tetras some amano shrimp and 6 corys. I had a pair of rams for about a year they both passed away so I just want to add another small school of something. I think 8 should be good
I have rummy’s and rams and I think their super easy to keep. I use bare bottom tanks and plants in pots. I’ve had a school of about 30 or so for like 2 years.
I find this really interesting in my local fish I brought 6 of these and their faces were a nice bright red then for the next year all their rummynose faces were a pale sometimes really pale red and everything time I question the workers saying why they are so pale as mine are bright red they say oh there’s different types of rummynose tetra and I must have the Asia version. Then after a year they finally had the bright red once and in the other tank they had the pale ones. Now having watched ur video I’m questioning if there were lie to me does anyone know if this is true?

In Singapore LFS sell $1 per fish

So true! A hungry fish is a happy fish.
That's my number 1 principle.
By far my favorite community fish. Plan to have about 20 or so in my planted 75
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten this kind of video. Love it!
Its important to note the rummy noses lose their red spot at night! Every night all night they turn completely silver
Fascinating. I'll have a look! I only have 3 but I want to get at least 7. They are a great looking fish.
Yes! I’ve noticed this with mine as well. Whenever the lights are off they lose the red.
That is amazing!
They are great and if looked after live quite awhile. They and my corydoras are legends
Not really..it may get lighter but not completely gone

@@christianjones1834 not yet, rebuilding fishroom #1, just brought home 87 new to me aquariums...thanks

Hey Cory, great video! Awesome timing too, as I’m currently aquascaping a 5 gallon cube nano tank, and I’m deciding on what to add to the tank.

Easily my #1 tetra. Tight schooling, brilliant colors, always active. Love them.
I really want to do a big school of these but need the right tank first: always thinking of that dream tank!
Wow. I had no idea Rummynose and Blue Rams was a tank I had to keep in my lifetime, but there it is.

My local mom and pops store insists on keeping them at a low pH, I buy from them and keep them around 6.8 and they do great 🤷♂️

I loved them til my school of them got ich. 😩 Maybe 1 day I’ll attempt them again.
I agree on the ‘canary in the mine’ analogy 100%.
Hi Murphy ! I love seeing u 💓 so hansome 😊
What size school would you have in a 75 gallon with with a few center pieces fish such as blue acara and angelfish?

Nice subliminal plug with the aquarium co op heater in the tank
I also noticed my serpae tetras would become pale when they were first put into my tank and got their color back
You said there are a ton of them out there but I am having a hard time finding them on the east coast. Online and at LFS!
Would they do well I a 65g tank with 8 Bolivan Rams?
Haha, love the "dead" edits
i know the fish at my local petsmart are usually brought in pretty young and always stressed out, not because of the care but mostly because of people walking up to their tanks all day shoving their hands and face against the glass and with the turn around these fish might have less then 48 hours to adjust to the tank at the store while there are bright lights and intrusive people, some petstores are just not a good environment for fish
What is the best way to acclimate this fish to my tank from a local fish store? Thanks
Amazing, beautiful fish...but they are fin nippers! They like to hit the fins on my Blue-eyed Bristlenose and Garra Panda when those fish hold up on the front of the glass. When they ship these guys why do they ram 100 into a bag. Lots of scaling problems?
Have seen these in a none heated tank but not sure the ambient temp of where the tank
I love the way they school, but mine are so dumb tho. I lost 7 of them last week, they were in a temporary tank while I was re-scaping/-cycling their own tank. They squeeze themselves into tight spaces (between a wall and filter floss) and then they die because they got stuck.
Wish I could find some!!!
@@pecosR0B yeah Tyler would be a haul for some tetras
awesome video
Most of mine didnt make it. I bought 14 of them for a 40 gallon with a dozen neons, only have 4 left.
How many of these for a 29 gallon planted tank?
Great video! What’s the best minimum tank size for a group of 8 rummy nose? I have a 29g but I feel like it may be a bit too small once they are grown
I have 8 in a 29g with 6 corys and two dwarf gouramis and they are doing great in there, very active and feeding very well adding lots of activity to my tank, i keep one side of my tank heavily planted and the other half with minimal plants and decor
@@lruddy8820 Thank you!
Maestro!
Rummynoses are only 50 cents in asia, some might even go lower like 30 cents. Same goes for platinum rummynoses.
What are you feeding these rummy’s
I find this really interesting in my local fish I brought 6 of these and their faces were a nice bright red then for the next year all their rummynose faces were a pale sometimes really pale red and everything time I question the workers saying why they are so pale as mine are bright red they say oh there’s different types of rummynose tetra and I must have the Asia version. Then after a year they finally had the bright red once and in the other tank they had the pale ones. Now having watched ur video I’m questioning if there were lie to me does anyone know if this is true?
are they easy to breed in a tank?
Nice fish 👌👌👌👌👌
Of all the tetras I have kept, Rummy Nose tend to develop Ich quite regularly.
Absolutely
Bro I got back to my aquarium this morning and all my rummynoses had lost their color and one of them was dead. What did I do? :(
