One such tool is the Stages of Change Model, which helps identify the different stages people go through when they need to make important changes in life. The first stage is precontemplation, where you might sense something is off but aren’t fully aware of the extent of the issue. You may feel discomfort, but you haven’t yet pinpointed the cause. In this stage, many people aren’t aware they’re in a toxic relationship and don’t see a way out.
    It can be hard to recognize toxicity, especially when it's mixed with moments of affection. Many people, like Ashley, who stayed in a toxic relationship for years, look back and see warning signs they missed at the time. For her, these included jealousy, manipulation, emotional withdrawal, and constant criticism.
