  • While Gjirokaster may not be a big town, there is seriously soooo much to do here! We definitely weren't satisfied just one day of exploring, so we went back out to soak in the town.
It was a nice, cool morning so we started the day with a hike to the Ali Pasha Bridge. Despite it being called a bridge, it's actually an aqueduct from the time of the ruler Ali Pasha. Most of the original stones from the aqueduct have been removed and repurposed for other things like the massive castle we went to in the last video. What is left of the aqueduct is minimal but there is still this really cool part of it that now resembles a bridge. Walking over it was so fun and seeing the shepherds herding was a nice touch.
From there, we went to lunch and to the Cold War Museum which takes you through a bunker from the communist period. This bunker would have been for the party elite and is a view into a world lived in the event of a nuclear attack. This series of tunnels dug into the side of the mountain has been left mostly untouched since it was looted following the fall of communism, giving it a very eerie feeling. This really was a fascinating way to end our stay in Gjirokaster and we would definitely go back!

Hi! We are Marshall and Sabrina, a couple from Colorado who are eager to see the world! We quit our jobs and packed our bags to pursue a life of full-time travel.
Our travels began in 2022 where we spent a month and a half navigating through new territory and adjusting to living out of a suitcase. After taking a year to build up our savings, we boarded a plane with one-way tickets to Europe!

I do like that kind of museum, so atmospheric. You're preaching to the converted with Albania and me, I have seen quite a few vlogs from here and I already really wanted to visit, but it's looking even better than I remember, you're doing a brilliant job!

You guys have seriously put Albania on our radar. Never knew there were so many cool things to see and do here!
You're so right Sabrina, it does give video game vibes. Some places are just so beautiful it's hard to believe they're real.
That museum sounded wild! Glad you guys stayed safe.

It really wasn’t on our radar either until like the week before we got there 😂 we’re so happy we decided to roadtrip though because we really would’ve missed so much by just staying in the capital

Great video guys. I stayed in gjirokastra for a couple of days in June 2022 and I spent 15 minutes looking for the cold war museum entrance. Now I know 😂

Karafil is the Albanian name for cloves. It is the same word as for carnations as cloves look like small carnation flowers.
