How We Pack For Long-Term Travel (CARRY-ON ONLY)

- Packing for a trip can be really overwhelming - we were definitely overwhelmed when starting to think about this trip! But, after a lot of thought and preparation, we came up with a complete list of items to bring that we find really useful and want to share with you!
In 2022 we went on a six week trip to Europe, and while that's not an incredibly long time, we learned so much about which items we missed and what we could live without. We’re now taking this new knowledge and applying it to our packing so we can live comfortably while on the road (or in the sky) using only backpacks. Hopefully this helps you get started on your travel packing list!

If you're new here...
Hi! We are Marshall and Sabrina, a couple from Colorado who are eager to see the world! We quit our jobs and packed our bags to pursue a life of full-time travel.
Our travels began in 2022 where we spent a month and a half navigating through new territory and adjusting to living out of a suitcase. After taking a year to build up our savings, we boarded a plane with one-way tickets to Europe!

We need to stock up on those detergent sheets when we're back in the US in October!
Yes they’re amazing!!
It's always fun seeing what other long-term travelers pack! I'm hoping to downsize before we head out on the next leg of our trip. 🌺Heidi
Yeah it is! We’re so happy with the bags we brought and the decision to do only carry on. I don’t really feel like we compromised on anything… we’ll see once winter comes though!😂
@@MarshallandSabrina We're figuring out our winter wardrobes for our next trip to the snow. It's possible to keep them pretty minimal, just layering up a sweater, puffy jacket, and rain jacket. As long as you have some warm pants too.
Great video ! We love seeing how others pack their bags for a long trip. Helps us get great ideas
Thanks! We love that too! We’ve found some really great products by watching other packing videos
Nice job and good ideas 🎉
Thank you! 😊
Very informative video. I need to learn from it for sure. I pack twice as much for a weekend trip.
Hahaha and that really isn’t an exaggeration 😂
Great video thank you for sharing! I have been using the same Cotopaxi pack but in the 42L. The 42L has a water bottle holder which is great. I have not had any problems with this size when travelling. awesome job!!
Thank you so much!! Yeah I (Marshall) considered getting that but ended up going with the 35 because we saw mixed reviews about the size limits for airlines. They both seem great!
The 42L version has a slim water bottle sleeve and you can also buy a clip on water bottle holder that’ll fit any of the Allpa bags. It’s not the best but it’s worked well enough. Other option is a water bottle with a loop and hooking it to the bag so you leave the quick stash pocket open for other things.
Thanks for the tip! Currently we have a couple carabiners on the packs that we sometimes use. We find that they swing all around though and I don’t want to hit someone. I bump into enough people already with how big the packs are! 😂
Long time no see guys! Glad you’re back at it. Love how you laid everything out. Great tips and so impressed you only use a GoPro and a phone for all your videos!
Highly considering checking out that backpack. 👀
Thank you so much!! We’re so happy to be back 😊 congrats on 1k subs!!!! 🥳
Great video! We just downsized (again) to carry on only, and already feel so relieved with having less stuff. What kind of fanny pack do you have? We are looking into adding one (or a sling) into the mix but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
Congrats on downsizing! 🥳 I have a lululemon fanny pack. I got it as a gift so I’m not sure on the exact style, but from looking online, it looks like it may be their 1L everywhere belt bag. I love it! It’s so spacious and has several dividers to keep it organized. It has been perfect!
@@MarshallandSabrina Thanks! I guess I just need to get a hold of one, I don't want anything too big of course, but 1L seems so small! haha Guess I just need to decide is if I want a small pack or a sling big enough to hold a water bottle, I keep going back and forth.
@@tendegreeswarmer it’s small but I’m continuously amazed at how much we can cram into it everyday!
10pcs of underwear and 7 socks? Yikes! We live with 3 pairs of each. Also, to fix your carriage of all these shorts and pants, we live with convertible pants that can do both. We literally can live for years out of 2 small carry on and 2 computer cases. Anything else, you can buy and toss for cheap anywhere in the world.
Haha yeah it may seem like a lot if you travel like that but we’ve actually been super happy with our packing so far!
You might need to rethink your strategy, though, when you go to Asia. Most airlines here have a 7kg per person limit on all combined carry-on bags. They don't measure every time but they do often enough that it's a big risk to be aware of.
Good to know! We picked up an AirTag so we’re prepared to check a bag if we ever need to. We’re going to have to train to get everything under 7kg though 😂 thanks for the heads up!
@@MarshallandSabrina it can be a real challenge with electronics, all those rechargeable batteries that can't be checked in.
But Marshall should never give up the drone!! 🤣
@@ExploreTayo Yupp that will definitely make it tricky haha but he will find a way to get the drone through!
How’s everything going?,super. well travel, adios. ))
We just started traveling again so everything’s amazing!! Hope you’re doing good! 😊 thanks for watching
Any idea how can travel longterm i havebo degree am almost 63 and just want out. I m thinking of tefl but dont know how to market myself. I need a solution as nowhere to return to in Uk!. Very helpful tips, I want to take 2 tiny bags as last time checked bag lost once on plane twice by buses!!! 😂 Yes shampoo bars the best, already have them, going minimal makeup although love it and tooth powder instead of paste! Heaviest are meds and ltop
Teaching English could be a great option! We haven’t considered it personally, but we know of a lot of people who have been able to travel by doing that! We haven’t tried tooth powder yet but that sounds like a great replacement!! Thanks for watching 🥰
@@MarshallandSabrina thanks for excellent tips and enjoy your trip.
@@lbunnygordon1133 thank you so much! We wish you luck on your journey and hope you find something to make it work 🥰
I am packing for Long term travel in Europe how do you get all that stuff on as a carryon? The weight limits on Lufthansa and Ryanair are what I’m struggling with. I have an entire office setup too and it alone weighs 18 lbs.
We haven’t had any issues traveling with all of this through Europe so far. We got through just fine on Ryanair but haven’t flown Lufthansa. Our sizes and weights are pretty much at the max for most airlines but we’ve had no issues
That is enough space for a person to bring belongings in to live for a year no questions asked. If you can't fit it in, you need to look at what you are taking. We have never exceeded that and live long term travelling.
