Glad to make my 1st appearance as an Editor! 😁 P.S. - So many times while editing this video I was tempted to go back to Mister just for another Ice Cream Bar. They were SOO GOOD!!!
Michael, you are one of the most genuine, cheerful and educational vloggers on UA-cam. As an Amtrak employee I hope to see you on the rails in the US again but your channel has evolved so nicely it’s a joy to watch everything you publish. Keep up the good work and I hope you never lose your adventurous spirit.
I grew up in Coquitlam from '62 - '91 spending many a day in Vancouver. Thoroughly enjoying your videos of the area and history. I moved away long ago but love watching the city through your eyes!
1) Thanks for introducing Matt. 2) I'm not good with heights and my balance sucks but the tree walk looks fantastic. I have gone to arboretums and botanical gardens in other cities but not yet in Vancouver. 3) Thanks for continuing to state that the lands are unceded - it's an important distinction.
Sunday night in Melbourne and I've just watched this week's offering from you, Mike. Yes, no matter where one lives, there is always something new to do and explore. I love your promotion of the pantavus jacket. I have a similar blue waterproof jacket but it's a poor man's version of pantavus without the hood and reflective stripes. You hit the spot nicely with the enjoinder to go out when you can and explore what is around you. You have given so much joy to people over the last 18 months since the scourge of COVID put our world into panic and depression, so PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK. Great that you have Matt on board to assist with editing, He's a cool dude and it's great you are friends as well as having a professional relationship. Loved the adrenalin rush of those tree-top suspension bridges. Had a chuckle at the icecream sandwiches. Those are giant sized choc wedges you both had. Great to see you are enjoying your summer. Here in Melbourne it's mid winter and I'm having a love affair with my gas space heater. We are relatively free to travel within our own State of Victoria at the moment and enjoy some measure of normal life after a five week lockdown but now it's Sydney's turn to suffer. Interstate travel and our travel bubble with our Kiwi mates across the ditch (Tasman Sea) has been suspended for now (Just in time to stuff up the plans of many families trying to get away for the mid year school holidays). Oh well, at least I have managed to avoid the virus so far by following the rules. I'm content to do just what you suggest - explore locally and discover what's new! Until next week's offering; Cheers, enjoy the summer and stay safe.
You have been so amazing throughout this pandemic helping to encourage us to explore our own backyard. We’ve been busy following your videos and it’s kept my two little ones entertained and outdoors! So excited to go on some more adventures! Thank you for this, you rock 💙
Mike great video. Love stepping back in time, real interesting! Growing up we had a rotary phone on a party line. When you were able to get the line free you could hear a click and you knew someone was listening in. Could have been with two three other people. I am 67 and your right when I think of the black and white TV with the lens we bought and stuck on the screen to make the picture look bigger and party lines then think where we are today with technology it’s a relatively short amount of time. Ok I know 67 is old but it’s amazing to think your call got placed with someone pulling a wire and plugging you in. Now you take a little box out of you pocket and can see a person talking to you from anywhere. At this age it blows my mind! Matt’s awesome, great content and edit!!! Yes need more Matt in front of the camera! 😀👍👍
This is awesome. Your chemistry with Matt is spot on and your positive energy is always uplifting. I have to admit, I started watching your videos for the trains, but I've really become a fan of yours. Happy Holidays.
This is probably the most entertaining video you've put out Michael, I'm learning more and more about this area from every video you produce about Vancouver and area!
🇨🇦❤️This was great, Michael! It was nice to meet your editor and he does a great job for you. I worked as a front desk clerk at an old hotel in the late ‘70’s and used a Bell telephone maintained plug switchboard. It was a lot of fun and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. The same maintenance guy came every month to inspect and clean it and he polished it with banana oil, so the little office had that sweet aroma for a few days. 🍌
Another winner Michael!!! I am always amazed at how many fun and interesting things that you come up with to see/experience in Vancouver. It was also great seeing Matt in the video. It appears as though you two have a wonderful friendship/working relationship.
The ubc botanical garden is such an under rated spot. Its rarely busy and in the spring the rhododendrons are plentiful and huge! I also reccomend checking out the cactus gardens and the very unique "golden spruce" hatchling. Its not the most eye popping tree there but the history of how it got there is truly fascinating.
Thanks for featuring us and Nitobe Memorial Garden! Glad to see that you enjoyed the Greenheart TreeWalk, it's definitely not one to miss for the adventurous. 😊
You narrate your videos not like a host but more like a goofy cool friend just hanging out. I'll never see all that you've already shown but I love it because you really do take me along. Thanks
Vancouver needs to recognize you for the AMAZING videos you've made of this beautiful, diverse, fascinating city! You are, literally, a one-man welcome wagon! Oh- and the schools would do well to show some of your more 'historical' videos to teach Vancouver history. I look forward to each weekly installment!
The botanical garden took my breath away. It reminded me of Bodnant Gardens in North Wales. If you are ever in that area, be sure and check out the acres of gorgeous trees, plants, and flowers.
If you have a day to spare (and a car), I suggest packing a lunch and go nature exploring. Start at the Lynn Canyon Bridge (a free suspension bridge), then drive to Cleveland Dam. At the dam, walk down to salmon hatchery. If the timing is right, then you can even see the salmon spawn. If you're feeling energetic, the Grouse Grind is not far away. After that, drive on to Horseshoe Bay and explore a bit. The scenery is gorgeous. Then head north to Porteau Cove for more views. Shannon Falls is next and if Grouse Grind wasn't enough, you can hike up the Chief. (about 3+ hours). Finally, drive up to Tantalus lookout, then turn around and drive back to Vancouver. (or you can drive on to Whistler) Try to time it so you can make it to the Quercus point in Murrin Provincial Park in time for sunset. The hike up there is pretty easy, takes about 30 minutes. So if sunset is 7, get started on the hike at 6pm. IMO, best sunset ever. Bring a flashlight because it'll be dark going down.
I've been living away from Vancouver for the past 12 years, couldn't even visit for the last year due to covid. But now I have so many places I need to check when I come visit in August!
I don't know how you do it but I don't know of any other content creator who has been able to make these many travel videos out of a single city. What makes it even better is that every video is paced well, interesting and well edited.
The fashion show at the beginning, the tree walk, the very cool coffee shop and what looks like amazing food and drinks - this video has it all! 👏🤣 thanks for the great video and some awesome hidden gems.
One of those neon signs: Smilin' Buddha Cabaret, used to be the sign for an actual cabaret in Vancouver. It closed down, but the band 54-40 played there so much they acquired the sign and took it on tour with them, so that sign has seen some adventures.
Another excellent video Michael! I'm sitting here in 100+ degree heat in my Vancouver watching you walk around your Vancouver with a jacket on - WHAT?!!
Just went to milltown pub for fathers day. I had my 98 yr grandmother with me and they were so respectful and accommodating for her. Food was really good too, really recommend the flatbreads!
Great video! A lot of fun. You prove over and over again that there are so many amazing places to see in one’s hometown - or in any city - that aren’t just “touristy”.
I hope the museum also talks about how the indigenous people where moved off their land into "designated land" which is often labelled as given to them when it was rightfully theirs
Mike not only did you give us great info on parts of Vancouver’s history…but also some great sites to visit that other wise I may have never known about…looking forward to a visit in the near future…👍
I cannot wait to move to Vancouver (coming soon!)... but your videos make the wait so worthwhile. Jotting down all these future exploration tips! And great job, Matt! Cute and skilled :)
My mom was an operator in 50's or 60's way before i was born. Awesome video, I have not been to the museums since 80's I have to return and see them all again, Also must try that ice cream shop
I love it, Mike. There is always something different that you are showing. What an exceptional vlog! I think we all met your editor when you brought us to squamish. Tell him thank you.
That is true! I was in the Downtown Squamish video, and although I did edit that video too (my 1st DownieLive edit) I wasn’t officially part of the team at that point 🙂
I was recently in Victoria visiting from the Midwest America and was amazed by the provincial and regional parks there. This video makes me want to go back just to go to Vancouver now!
I have been to Vancouver 3 times in the past. For me, these are cool tips for the next visit. Hopefully soon after the pandemic. Many greetings from Germany.
Great to see Matt. I love the food spots: Chupito's looks awesome, and Mister also looks great. The coffee shop at Emily Carr looks fantastic. I have to try these places.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos about Vancouver. I'd love to move there and become a Canadian citizen, but only if you promise the temperature will never go below 60 degrees.
Today I did something I never, ever wanted to do and never, ever really want to do again. My best friend of 30 years had lost her battle with cancer. She barely made it, but she took her death with dignity medication and died as I held her hand. We had a Zoom meeting where her friends and family gathered to tell her how much they loved her. She then drank the cocktail and as we (me, her doula, her only child, and his wife) held her, she quickly passed into a deep sleep, then a non-responsive coma. Fifty-five minutes later, she entered immortality. I know this may seem way off topic, but eight hours have passed and I've just sat here numb. I decided to watch your video and thought of those wonderful places. Joyce would have loved them so. Thank you, Michael. You added a good thing to a not great day. I hope I never lose someone again.
I had an aunt that was a phone operator as well she would be in her last 90's now ..I have her old head sets ...(when she was at home she was very hard to get a hold of )
As someone who just graduated from Emily Carr, I can tell you that most students enjoyed brutally ridiculing the Nemesis café building (especially during its construction stage). Nobody could figure out wtf it was suppose to resemble, so we had to make our best guess. My top three: • poorly diced tomato • fugly red onion • reverse tampon lotus
Another great video. Wonderful and beautifully unique coffee shop and great to meet another one of your fans. The Japanese Garden is like an oasis and just more of that vibe that I often find with you. I get a peaceful calm that goes right into me. The indigenous tribes of the Northwest and the names and the parts of their culture that we often just take for granted.....I would love to see some native cultural spots and some interaction with that rich legacy. Mike, I have thought that since watching that the quality has just gotten better and better. Getting to meet Matt was great. He's seems to mesh so easily with your vibe that I just thought it was all you. Keep it up.
I'm still catching up on your older videos, in this case one that you made a year ago. We have only been to Vancouver once and tried to see as much as we could, but your videos have shown us that there is so much more. Perhaps if we can get there again, we can visit all the places that we missed.
Your own 'backyard' ~ ~ how cool is that/this? For unknown reasons Mike, I thought YOU handled your own editing. I see now that I was wrong thinking that. God bless Matt for his work!
@@DownieLive forgot to mention but once the border is open, you’re always welcome to my place at Charlotte, NC. My wife and I will host you. The city is obviously not as cool as Vancouver but it has great spots to walk and/or ride a bike or go to mountains which are couple hours away.
Fun fact, my uncle worked on building the crab sculpture behind you at 8:33 😀 Loved these places! I've not seen most of them either, and am definitely checking them out. (I might bypass the treewalk ngl, too much of the fear)
Loving this as always. The Vancouver Museum is really cool. At 8:31 you can see our old church neon sign "Jesus the Light of the World" that used to be at Kingsway and Rupert.
You're making Vancouver a must go to place. It's been a while but I'll have o see it again some day. I used to stay more often in Victoria on the Island. I didn't know you had an editor but did notice a step up in complex editing a while back. Since you've had to stay close to home, more and more people recognize you now when you're filming. You're becoming a local celebrity.
You did fine expressing the beauty of the garden and showed the Nitobe plaque. However the story goes that UBC brought him over from Japan to design the garden. Then BC weather killed him. So UBC brought over several other Japanese gardeners to finish the job and named the garden after Nitobe. Anywhere I have ever travelled, Nitobe is the most beautiful garden.
Thanks Mike, I always try new places just because of you, Otherwise life is too much busy and nobody have enough time to find new places, Thanks for videos and recommendations
Really want to go to Vancouver, some of my fav shows such as X-files (season 1-5) and MacGyver (season 3-6) were filmed in Vancouver, would love to visit some of the filming locations, rain or shine, I think the vibe is great. And being from the UK, we have some similarities
Another awesome video. Matt does a great job editing, an yeah you need more of him in your videos. I really need to work on my passport so I can make a trip up that way if an when then boarders ever open. Keep up the awesome work Matt!!
Hi, Mike!! This vídeo was very very Nice and you have shown a lot of special places. I loved the Little and zen garden❤️ but that bridge..i would not do it😦 It was so great that you had presented US your friend Matt👏he looks Young 😃 ice cream sandwish sounds lovely 👍 You are the best!!
Great video. Those vines are wisteria. They grow non-stop. Never plant one! They take over. Another great video. The biggest adventures can be in our own backyard.
I love this! I live an hour out of Vancouver but we like to go for a good weekend away. My number 1 goal is to always try a new food place! You've added a couple to my list!
Just to clarify.. Tacos are also authentic Mexican food.. 😂 Well, at least if done right (not hard tortilla, and no sour cream to start with)... Loved the video! Specially the UBC garden 😱😱!
That was another great one Mike. I have wanted to go to Nemesis coffee too. Hey, you went on the tree walk without me! I volunteer there. I have got to try the ice cream sandwiches.
When I was a kid we used to visit my aunt who had a wind up telephone In Hazelton B.C. and you would talk to an operator that we all knew and she would connect you to your friend. That was 1969. Wow.
The Girl Scouts and the Girl Guides of Canada had a sleepover at the planetarium years ago before Covid. They had a ball, so glad you got out, and about how about Ziplining up at Grouse Mountain or canoeing down the Frazier River this summer?
Another great video and the list grows for my next visit to Vancouver..if they ever open the border again!.So now I will look forward to the clever video editing thanks to your tech savvy pal Matt. Thanks Michael and see you next Saturday, Oh yeah and my first stop will be the ice cream shop!
Glad to make my 1st appearance as an Editor! 😁
P.S. - So many times while editing this video I was tempted to go back to Mister just for another Ice Cream Bar. They were SOO GOOD!!!
We’ll have to get you a Pantavus jacket too!
You have the coolest name.
We want more Matt doing food reviews
You have all summer to return to Mister.
😂 Right?!! We should swap roles, he’s much more entertaining. 😄
Matt’s editing is amazing! He did blend into the style seamlessly.
Yes! That’s a sign of a good editor!
Thanks! 😁
the new nemesis location looks amazing!

More to come!

It really is!

Definitely!!
I’ve done that tree walk, it was so cool, and a smidge scary, to be up that high in the trees! The kids loved it!
I hope the museum also talks about how the indigenous people where moved off their land into "designated land" which is often labelled as given to them when it was rightfully theirs

Matt's a natural, he's got star quality, awesome spots and incredible treats, thank you !!!!!! Go Vancouver Go !!!!!! 🤚😆
I totally agree!
Great video! I just moved to Vancouver, so now I’ll have some ideas on what to do :D
Welcome! You'll love it here :)
I feel sorry for you
Fun fact, my uncle worked on building the crab sculpture behind you at 8:33 😀 Loved these places!
I don't even drink coffee but I would definitely visit Nemesis Coffee. What a cool place!
Got me wanting to try those cookies when I’m back in Van. Awesome video
Yeah, Trav! They’re delish!
Mike your videos are giving me so much inspiration for the trip I hope to make next year when the world is hopefully a little more open
Nice to meer you, Matt. Hello from The Netherlands.
Great vid again, Mike
You did fine expressing the beauty of the garden and showed the Nitobe plaque. However the story goes that UBC brought him over from Japan to design the garden. Then BC weather killed him. So UBC brought over several other Japanese gardeners to finish the job and named the garden after Nitobe. Anywhere I have ever travelled, Nitobe is the most beautiful garden.
That hair-swoosh and smile by the lake: amazing.
Thanks Mike, I always try new places just because of you,
Otherwise life is too much busy and nobody have enough time to find new places,
Thanks for videos and recommendations
Really want to go to Vancouver, some of my fav shows such as X-files (season 1-5) and MacGyver (season 3-6) were filmed in Vancouver, would love to visit some of the filming locations, rain or shine, I think the vibe is great. And being from the UK, we have some similarities
You’d be surprised how much is filmed here! People jokingly call it the Hollywood of the North. 😇
Another awesome video. Matt does a great job editing, an yeah you need more of him in your videos. I really need to work on my passport so I can make a trip up that way if an when then boarders ever open. Keep up the awesome work Matt!!
Hi, Mike!!

I'm terrified of heights but when I went to the tree walk in UBC it was beautiful I'd still recommend it
Iv been in Van since 2014 and only just discovered your channel. Now I have a list of places to try!
Thanks for sharing this. As a resident of the Vancouver area (specifically tri-cities) I definitely appreciate this
Glad you enjoyed it!
and Matt...great to meet you!!
Sorry I missed you, Bob!
love this.
have never been to Canada and now I know where to start...thanks for the great introduction to some great places to see in Vancouver
This is Matt. ❤️. Matt is dope. Matt should be in more DowneyLive … two AWESOME GUYS for the price of one! Priceless 😉👍🏻
Couldn't agree more! I'll try to bring him along more often, Rob!
Hey Matt, great to meet you. Fantabulous job on the editing. Looking forward to more!
I have ...never heard of the Museum of Vancouver and I've been here for 25 years @___@ thank you for letting me know!
You're welcome, Alice! Enjoy!
So awesome to see wonderful peeps recognise you Mike 🤓✌🏽 awesome video
Another great video and the list grows for my next visit to Vancouver..if they ever open the border again!.So now I will look forward to the clever video editing thanks to your tech savvy pal Matt. Thanks Michael and see you next Saturday, Oh yeah and my first
