#DaveGrohl #Nirvana #SmellsLikeTeenSpirit
Thanks for watching and subbing! This is my deep dive analysis on the original studio recording. Disclaimer: This video is long :) Wanted to hit every point I could think of.
ua-cam.com/video/Aco1d_iz-ao/v-deo.html
One of the greatest drum tracks ever laid down IMO
Dave's style is impeccable timing combined with hitting as physically hard as you can, it's what I strive for as a punk/rock drummer
Yes it's so good Will!
The way he creates even more tension in the higher end of the dynamic range just makes this song as perfect as it can be..
Masterclass
Watching the original video you can see the emotions on his face. He starts out looking a little sad, hits that opening sequence and lights up, then it's ALL business after that. The look of absolute sadness at the end is heartbreaking. I got to see Nirvana in 92, and every time I looked at Dave during the show he had a big dumb smile that seemed to say "holy shit, I'm a rock star".
Love it!
Dave has incredible talent for sure. The thing I like about Dave is the many times he grabs a person from the audience and has them jump up on stage and rock with the Foo Fighters. Dave has proven to me that he has moved far past the need to impress anyone. He did that long ago! Rock on Dave!
Thanks for the review Andy! 🤟👍
100% Mike
I love the way he falls back into his younger self and drums that song the way he used to play it even though he really doesn’t play drums much these days. Recorded at Sound City on the mixing board Dave now has in his home studio, which he bought when the studio shut down.
The drumming here is truly impressive. Constant energy from the first to last note in impeccable time.
His Hanukkah sessions this year confirm your idea about his preference for a stripped down drum kit. Unlike last year, he had the space for a bigger kit and still used a small one. If you haven’t seen them, they’re cool because they do covers of a wide range of artists. His daughter sings night 5. Yes, I’m a total fan girl. Got tickets for 2 shows this summer.
Sounds amazing
Dave writes drum parts like guitar riffs. Drumming that stays with you.
WELL SAID!
Man hes puts his whole body into that beat. Dave your awesome, all your music is awesome... we (ie) music fans appreciate your talent! thank you dave!
Another great reaction Andrew. The comment that caught me was when you said David is a musician and not a drummer. Very true. He proved that when he formed the Foo Fighters and stepped away from the kit in favor of the guitar. The man is multi-talented and earned my respect when he still was on stage performing in a wheelchair with his leg in a splint. That's dedication to musicianship!
Thanks again for the great video sir!
Thanks Gary!
And yes you nailed it mentioning the time Dave played in a wheelchair.
You can't stop him. Genuine rock star
DAVE GROHL a a drumming /rock god, a legend and insanely humble and knows what its like to be a young and starting musician
Well said Leighton!
Dave is such a great drummer, and the one that has the biggest impact on my playing. Heck, i'm even playing in a Nirvana tribute band, have been for 12 years now. The sheer power, the intensity, the ingenious drumparts and the ability to make everything seem so easy is absolutely inspiring. Even though he doesn't hit thát hard in this video, he drove drumtechs crazy in the past. Cymbalstands had to be sandbagged and gaffertaped, he used Aquarian Hi-Energy heads on the snare because it was the only type that wouldn't break, they brought 3 pedals on tour because every part on them would break at some point. The man used 2B's, held upside down. Brutal. So fitting for the music they played.
Also, they almost brought in another drummer for their unplugged-session as he just couldn't play that soft. Someone got him brushes and wiresticks at the last minute, he used them on the show and knocked it out of the park. I can relate by the way, we are doing unplugged shows as well and holding back so much after years of heavy hitting took a great time to get used to. Awesome to pay tribute to these legends though, i wouldn't want it any other way.
Wow great info here Koen!
And don't be afraid to link in a vid of your tribute act!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Well, I'm a real 90's kid, grew up with Nirvana and it never went away. Me and our singer especially read everything about the band we can get our hands on, from gear guides to tour anecdotes.
About video's, this is our unplugged-promo: ua-cam.com/video/TArIO0CsSok/v-deo.html and this is our pretty outdated "full throttle"-promo from a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/g1dMVvnX-uM/v-deo.html Both pretty rough because we never had a show properly filmed, but it's all we have :) Hope you like it!
Thank you for this. I love Dave Grohl’s drumming to my ear, but I don’t know why. You help explain why I like the strong sound without excessive, show off drumming.
I wouldn't say Dave is an all time great drummer as far as technical ability, but as far as a drummer with the most presence, style, attitude and power, he is 100% up there as one of the best.
He's one of the best IMO!
How have you not reacted to the isolated track from track from Play by Dave Grohl yet? It's a bit long, but there's so much to break down and appreciate. It's not just audio either, you get to watch him perform it all in the studio.
Dave is such a good drummer and musician all around I loved this video
Thank you! Yes I agree total legend
Here are some Dave Grohl drum covers I have attempted. I sound nothing like Dave but it's fun to try!

Dave is a MASTER on what he does!
100% agree. He's the best at being Dave Grohl!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums He's the best Dave Grohl among all the Dave Grohls!
A master and a monster. The power and intensity is what takes it over the top
@@Alchemistic88 indeed!
@@Alchemistic88He is a good professional.
rating from 0 to 10, I would say Dave would be a 6.5.
He is far, far away for to be rating10.
He does use a bigger kit sometimes. The one he played with Them Crooked Vultures had another floor tom and a few more cymbals. I think he used a gong drum in that setup as well.
Oh right. Thank you!
Dave is an amazing musician because he plays multiple instruments. And if you are impressed by tom size, check out Igor Cavalera on Cavalera Conspiracy. Pretty sure he is using 14, 16, and 18 mounted toms and a 20 inch floor tom
Damn Jamie!
He is a legend on many fronts. Thanks
100% agree Craig!
Dave is phenomenal.
He is amazing. Even his hair remembers this song. 🤘🏽🥁
He’s a great timekeeper.
100% Ken
El mejor baterista de la historia. Brutal!
Impossible to replicate
I also worship at the church of Grohl. Please do some QOTSA tunes. You know the ones ;) Newish subscriber, you’ve gotten me in to some amazing new drummers. Cheers!
Yo Michael! Have you seen my QOTSA drum cover?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I did! Quite a great job. One of my favs to play as well. Those fills are so fun. Your version probably a bit smoother than mine :)
I'm exhausted just watching him , and I'm already lying down! ...
Technically I love the gap just before the double crash accents. He's pulling intentionally and the band is locked in to his tidal ebb . It's very clever and one of his defining qualities (as I hear it .)
There are not that many instantly recognisable drummers in history . Like Bonham. Copeland. Moon etc but Dave Grohl I think fits in this category .. and I'm not really up on his post Nirvana work other than the big hits with Ff and Qotsa . Yes, he's definately got his own thing going on . Respect.
Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮♥️
Absolute legend of a player.
Very few recognizable 'sounds' in terms of drummers. He's one of them
So I play bass. But I'm thinking of trying to learn the drums. I love this channel so dang much.
Thank you! I'm so glad
Thank you for doing this I was curious. Wondering how man of us laughed when the hair flipped the same. Thirty years later....and probably thirty pounds heavier, but damn the drummer.
KILLER player. STILL!
It amazes me that people don’t think he is a good drummer. He’ll go down as one of the greats!
Who thinks he's not a good drummer!?
That's ignorant! (in Michael Jackson/South Park voice)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums you see it in comments all the time. Usually in comparison to highly technical drummers and usually with a “he’s so basic”. Then the comment war begins between those that understand about feel and serving the song and those that want highly technical drumming.
@@AndrewRooneyDrumsElitest Technophiles like to shit all over Dave, from what I've seen. Because he isn't as technically gifted as someone like Dave Weckl for example, that somehow makes him an average or bad drummer. When people say shit like this, it shows they lack musical depth.
Since I don't speak spanish I wanted to say thanks for the subtitles....
If you haven’t done so already, you should watch/react to him play with Jimmy Page and JPJ, in 2008 at Wembley.. he played drums for the song Rock and Roll. Even more energy than he has in this video… it was amazing!! (Taylor Hawkins sang)!!
Oh yes! I saw that years ago. It was awesome
This is so interesting! I love Dave Grohl!! 🥁🥁🙂🤘🤘
He's one of my faves Lindsay!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums You should check out my channel whenever you get a chance.
My apologies...I've been watching for a while and haven't subscribed. Just did that now! Love your content.
Someone posted this with clips of him playing live in the Nirvana days in the background. The biggest differences: hair length, wardrobe, and how he held his sticks. My admittedly untrained eye could detect no difference in intensity or timing. He does seem a bit sad at the end of this. Understandable.
I was considering trying to learn this song but after seeing the sheet music and watching Dave hammer away at it this is definitely being left until I learn more basics lol
It's a legit hard song to play anything like Dave
I agree with u Andrew. Its Dave 30 years ago or even better.. The only thing different about Dave in this play through is.. He doesn't have the baby face he did 30 years ago.. And his hair is a Not as long.. lol If u closed your eyes and listened to this isolated session and then the session from 30 years ago.. I think u could make the argument that he played it better in this session. As apposed to 30 years ago.. This sounded Absolutely Amazing!
Yoyoka is a huge fan too. How cool would it be to get them together for a podcast?
That'd be the ultimate
Pretty cool and interesting how he goes right back to it! Im curious how (or even if) he plays his pre-Nirvana DC Hardcore band, Scream’s material. Scream had some extremely fast material! Here’s a July 4, 1993 show he did with Scream, playing Came Without Warning and Society’s Youth… well trying to, since the PA kept overpowering the breakers lol
ua-cam.com/video/oI9_cGd2smQ/v-deo.html
Also, for reference, since its so hard to find a decent-sound-quality video of it, here’s another guy doing a drum cover of Came Without Warning… Dave could play this stuff with ease back then … there are video clips of him playing so fast its almost hard to tell the hits lol anyway here’s this guy I just ran across, he does a great job nailing it! ua-cam.com/video/okzYyLCCXPg/v-deo.html
Sick!😂
Awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Still great in his age mate!
100% Russell!
I think the only rational response is “wow!”!
Unbelievable Christopher!
Mr. Andrew let's check this one ... SLAUGHTER TO PREVAIL - DEMOLISHER (Drum Play-Through by Evgeny Novikov)
Hey Andrew I’m sure you’ve been told but chis turner realeased a new song
Thanks Travis. Already recorded the reaction. Will be out next week :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums YES! Awesome cant wait!
If you want some vintage Dave Grohl - here he is with Queens of the Stone Age in 2002 at Glastonbury. Immense - ua-cam.com/video/zLjlewbZpp8/v-deo.html
Great stuff Peter!
What about Delta Empire? You have to check out this guy and do a reaction. He have done a lot of good drum cover videos.
Thanks for letting me know
AAAA-NI-MAL!! AAA-NI-MAL!!! I love Dave Grohl, every time I see him I just can't NOT see him as Animal lol. But the best is how he has succeeded as a rock GOD without being an @$$ or a tortured soul. Just a regular guy living his dream!
Yes Rick. One of the good guys.
And a monster musician
Ive ALWAYS had that opinion about Dave's playing!!! He looks like the real life Animal behind the kit XDXD im just glad Im not the only one who saw it lmfao
waiting for your reaction about Navicula's newest single DINASTI MATAHARI.
Nice vidoe! next pls react to Kerim Lechner! or Stef Broks from Textures
I've done videos on both of them!!
Great video. Dave Grohl and Danny Carey are the two hardest hitting drummers I've ever heard.
Please do Chris Kontos of Machine Head performing "Rage to Overcome " 2020 live drum cam.
I've always felt he was underrated, not enough credit. Im gonna get heck for this, but he definitely had an influence on Joey Jordison (RIP). I see alot of it in Joey's playing. I'm not a big fan of Nirvana, huge fan of Dave's.
The ferocity and pocket is unreal.
Human energizer battery
IMO if it weren’t for Dave Grohl the band wouldn’t be any where near as popular as they are and would just be considered a very average band
He is very underrated.
He really is a tremendous player. Total musician.
Anyone thinks they can execute this song close to this I'd love to see it.
It's not the notes with him. It's the feel and passion.
if Nirvana didnt replace Chad with Dave Nirvana wouyldnt have been as big as they were
reaction please :
Tielman brothers - rollin rock (live TV show 1960)
Best attractive performance solo drum 1960 (minutes 3.20)
Oh right. Thanks!
Watch Yoyoka cover this.
Of course she'll destroy it!
what is his job, chopping wood ???
Yup Ulrich!
Woot First!
Your channel rocks lol, love watching these videos as I learn the basics of playing drums
Yo!
Day 28 of asking for Nic Pettersen
When I listen to portnoy Mangini die oils and others this is boring and seems very simple and I am a drummer
@davegrohl get him on here for an interview!! People get the man his interview!!
Dave plays ok, And thatis it. There is nothing special about him on the drums. A person who has never played the drums, if they take a year of drum lessons, I can be sure that person play all the songs that Dave has ever recorded with. Nirvana, Foo fighters etc...
Andrew's point went completely over your head. No one can play Dave Grohl's parts like Dave Grohl, and that's what makes him incredible. No matter how simple the parts appear to be, they can't be replicated to the same degree. There's so much more to his playing than just that too.
