Dolly Parton & Chet Atkins (on banjo) - Black Smoke's a-Risin'

  • Chet plays banjo and sings with Dolly.
    At the start, he briefly plays "Hello Dolly" on the guitar. The real title of the first duet song is "Long Journey Home", a traditional bluegrass number. The best known versions are by the Stanley Brothers and Rose Maddox. Then, the "cornbread" lines are from "Lonesome Road Blues" (Bill Monroe). And finally, there is Foggy Mountain Top ( Earl Scruggs).
    Editor's Notes:More than 35,000 songs have been recorded in RCA Studio B. Over 1,000 of them were hit singles.

    Ah, the high, lonesome sound. I'm a native Californian living in Arizona, but I spent a few years in northern Virginia about a stone's throw from the Blue Ridge Mountains and you could hear great music like this just about every Friday or Saturday night if you wanted. It's kind of a kick watching Chet watch Dolly play. He'd been watching her a long, long time, and he was still just like the rest of us knuckleheads out here wondering, "How the hell does she play with those dang fingernails?!!"

    Thanks to Ken Burns! I’ve always loved Dolly, and now I’m discovering the world of country. As for the nails, I play piano, so I have to keep my nails very short. And the fingertips can’t be rough. I don’t think I could ever play guitar or banjo.

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  4 роки тому

      I've always found Dolly's "logic" here rather funny. Obviously, she might have become a better player without the nails, yet through all of the wigs, plastic surgeries, fake nails etc., her genuineness as a person ( and as a songwriter) shines through.

    *_Fact Check_* Dolly Parton did actually appear on the Grand Ole Opry in 1959 at age 13. It was a duet with her Uncle Bill Owens. Perhaps Chester was not there that night or didn't remember it, but she didn't have to "come back" later to get on the Opry as stated in the video. Dolly also recorded for the first time in 1959, journeying all the way to Lake Charles, LA to cut a couple of songs on the _Gold Band_ label. Grant Turner may have given Chet a copy of "Puppy Love", her first record. Dolly was one very determined girl!

    Dolly's always flirted with the "plastic" side of show business, where those who actually depended too much on props or baffled us with too much glitter, smoke and mirrors in that plastic world eventually just lost touch with more than reality it seems at times. She's risen above it though...every time. She most definitely is "the real deal."

    @MrCallipygous Thanks... it did confirm what I had worked out that it was an open Dflat tuning (some say C sharp which for practical purposes is the same thing) I notice that discussion started because of your upload. Any guitarists wanting to try should make sure each of their strings is tuned to either C# - E# - or G# (at least one of each) with a full barre the chord is named after the note found on the string/s tuned to C# - I won't be bothering! LOL

    @worthlessprotoplasm I've since checked (with Google) and found, what I suspected was correct. I can't be sure it's difficult to keep eyes on fingers when watching Dolly, but think the strings are tuned to produce a D flat chord when played open. I notice all the chords she plays are just barres and the one where she's not stopping any strings sounds like D flat (Chet wasn't cheating LOL)

  • @DelTangBrav
    @DelTangBrav 12 років тому

    @worthlessprotoplasm You ask if she's in Drop D - it looks more like Double D to me! Seriously I don't think the tuning she's in is Drop D - it looks as if she's in some form of open tuning to allow her to form chords with long nails. If it helps the key they're actually playing in is D flat.
