Overwintering My Hardy Banana | Here She Grows

- I'm officially USDA plant hardiness zone 6a! Which is just a smidge warmer than my 5b so it's not really all that different. But the temperature change may affect how well my hardy banana survives winter, if it survives at all. I think the chances are good and I'm relieved. I don't think my back would survive the dig and storage of such a massive root ball.
I've grown my hardy banana or Musa basjoo in a container as well as in the ground for years and now that she's enourmous, I'm experimenting with leaving her in situ for the first time with plenty of protective cover for the winter. We'll see how it goes and I'll update you in the spring no matter what.
Cross you fingers and hope for the best. (I cut out a few pups for a little insurance just in case and they'll spend winter in the basement with the brugmansia and mangaves.)
