And thank-you for watching.
The US Air Force has made a museum out of an obsolete intercontinental ballistic missile base. They have a guided tour that takes you underground through most of the facility. This silo was operational from 1964 to 1982 just south of Tucson Arizona.

Thanks for the memory ! 390th MIMS DMAFB .
I pulled about 250 alerts at sites just like this one but at McConnell AFB in Wichita, KS back in the early to mid 70's. This brings back lots of memories.
I have taken this tour and its worth every penny...
Just like I remember it. I was in the 381st SMW at McConnell AFB from 1966-1969.
Hey I went back and filmed it again. I spent a great deal of time with the engines.
ua-cam.com/video/sQs0T_0JexM/v-deo.html
Sept 2022 update - several commenters have indicated that the museum did special once a month tours that were more detailed. They took you down to the bottom of the missile and also showed you the crew quarters.
This made me want to come back so I contacted the museum to request this special tour. The response is that the special tour has not been done since covid and it will not be done again. Instead the museum is working on a digital visual tour that will be available on their website.
But I still want to go back and do a better job of filming. Many commenters have asked for me to slow down and be more descriptive.
It was called the "Top To Bottom" Tour, lasted about 4 hours, and literally took you from top to bottom of the complex. Going down to the flame detector ( The W as it was called) level at the very bottom was especially cool!
Thanks for taking the tour and sharing this with us!
My pleasure. I went there twice last year. The second time I tried to slow down my filming of the details. I also spent more time looking at the engines.
Check it out here and please help with a subscribe.

The "copper penny" Very good tour and well worth the time.
4:23 Missile at the museum is a training missile from Sheppard AFB - never used with a real warhead never had propellant loaded.
6:19 brief look at the missile adapter section with cylinders containing metalized balls that were ejected as decoys for the reentry warhead - cylinders remained but system removed in 1975 after the Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty of 1972.
thank-you John
That might explain why I don't remember the missile have different shade patterns like that. I remember it being more uniform but then, it's been 40 yrs ago for me at LRAFB.
Thanks again, John
we all know thats bull shit its just a cover story to fool the public but these missiles have a nuclear warhead and are fully operattional and the way they are going now they gonna need a lot of them to defend the us.
7:58 I believe fuel was circulated through those pipes prior to being injected into the mixing plate to keep the bell housing from melting and to pre heat the fuel.
yes. almost every engine uses regenerative cooling to keep the engine bell cold enough to survive the rocket exhaust, not sure whether they used the fuel or oxidizer on the titan II's though
Yes, and I am pretty sure they are simply copper pipes (copper for maximum thermal conductivity). No material could withstand the heat without either ablating or having some means of being cooled (in this case, the fuel provides that)
yup, steel pipes. Not aluminium rods. Still done that way to this day, though most engines now use preformed steel plate for the nozzles and wrap the cooling pipes around those as it's easier to mass produce.
Amazing video! Very interesting stuff.
One small suggestion for future videos : when you come across textual information pannels, take a moment to properly frame the pannel so the text is legible and hold it for a second or two, gives us viewers time to pause the video and read. 🙂
Noted!
I completely stop and film all the placards now. A new style has been created. I went back to this silo last month and re-filmed it.
I like how they have preserved the site for historical purposes
Very easy to get to. We had a reservation for the tour but they were accepting drop ins while we were there. They let us sit in the chairs and turn the keys
I’ve watched a ton of vids showing these bases in various states of decomposition. I’m glad there’s one that’s so pristine.
Yes this one is clean and kept clean. No smells.
This is pretty cool and you did an excellent job of sharing this with us broseph. Its so emotionally confusing for me as I love this type of thing and a war history buff but at the same time I just can't believe we have to go and even think like this and make these things period.

The most interesting place I've ever visited. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank your filming this so we'll and trying to get to each area first to pan across the room and give us a view without people. I've always wanted to go to this museum but my travels have never brought me near it and I don't know when I will be able to make a trip out just for it.
Yes I had to try hard to get footage without other people in the shots.

You're welcome. I went back a second time to film it better. It is recent post on my channel. I also spent a bunch of time with the engines.

Cool cool cool!!!
Hey I was back there two months ago and I tried to do a better job of filming. I got lots of complaints for going too fast. I'm also trying to figure out exactly how the rocket engines operated. They have a couple sitting on the ground that can be closely inspected.

I just came across your video and really enjoyed it. You got my subscription and I hit that like button.
Thank-you very much Jason. That video is getting so many hits that I intend to go back there and do a more professional video. If I ever get to 1000 subscribers I can get a lot more serious about creating channel content.
I didn't realise the missiles where so big. Thanks for posting.
This one's tiny really.

My old complex. I spent over seven years underground
Wow. Tell us about the fuel. How long did it keep for? How often did it have to be replaced?
Was this site covered in maintenance people every day or was it low maintenance?
I went there just 17 days after you id, its truly an awesome place to go check out!

i went there some yrs ago and had the guided tour by ex missile techs. V.interesting and when they turned the keys quite chilling! 2 x fuels that were hypergolic. Once combined that rocket was going to its target. No recall, auto destruct. Someone was going to have a bad day.

Those places are real scary, the us is not bluffing we have the weapons and will use them
The ""top to Bottom" Tour is the one to take. Only 6 people allowed on the tour and it is only offered a couple of times a month so you have to make your reservation well in advance, but it takes you literally into every space in the complex including down in the deflection all the way at the bottom. You see *everything* .
Yes, that's the one! You get to stand at the bottom of the silo looking up, incredible. And my tour was conducted by former missileers so we got to hear their personal stories of being on duty!
Also they let you turn the launch keys.
@@VannevarB2 Yeah, top to bottom is the best tour I have ever done of anything. I had a former watch commander as a guide and he answered every question I had, which was a lot.
They are not going to offer that tour anymore.

"Please do not touch the engines".. 2sec later dingdingding in the bellhouse 🤣
the engine bells actually used the engines fuel circulated through all those little rods to keep the bells from melting when it was running.

Did you feel like you were in the movie WarGames? That was awesome.
They will let you turn the key
I built that missile. Anybody want to call me a Liar ?
Not rod but tubes, in which fuel or oxidizer was circulated prior to combustion in order to keep the nozzle from melting.
Correct, tubes. Fuel is what ran through it, It kept the nozzle cool as well as preheating the fuel. Oxy just ran into the oxy dome. The fuel went into the fuel torus then into the tubes and back again to the shower head where the oxy and fuel were mixed.
Sad we no longer have a warhead with this potential at our disposal!

Are those cylinders on either side of the passageway shock absorbers?
Also, I'd be interested in how much ambient noise there was in that space when it was active. A friend of my mothers used to serve in a silo and he said that it killed his hearing. He's near deaf now.
Yes the corridor and the control room hang on big springs. And I’ll bet it was noisy when it was running
@@ontheroadwithnorm2024 Not too loud actually when things are running normally, at least based from my experiences with the Minuteman and Peacekeeper sites. Yes, there are motors that are constantly running, and aside from possibly needing some earplugs to keep from developing a headache when you're next to them for hours at a time, you get used to it. Under the not so normal conditions when stuff switches over to the battery operated systems, such as the emergency air conditioner, those motors run at a much higher pitch, and will give you migraines quickly, and could possibly even damage your hearing.
During my years as a launch crew member with the 374th in Little Rock the noise level in The control center was a constant 70 dB. 75 dB was the hearing protection threshold. You would walk out after a 24-30 hour alert dead tired because the noise level just beat the crap out of you.
Braaahhhh

I live around 75 miles from Malmstrom. There aren't any tours of Minuteman III silos. :(
That's cause that is our current missiles which is 40 years old they need to be replaced with new more modern weapons
Actually it's because access to the Minutemen system is very limited. Most of the silos are nowhere near the LCC . And the silo area is smaller area inside. ( Less maintenance needed because of solid propellent.) Getting access to the MM- LCC required permission from the Site Commander and Security Police .
There's no tours of the Minuteman 3 facilities because they are all still in service and on active alert , the closest you can get to an active silo is by driving past the access road.

Same rockets that put a man on the moon I believe.
Similar engines but different rockets. After the Titian system was dismantled, most of the rockets were repurposed to launch satellites.
Apollo/Saturn rocket systems were used to put man on the moon. After the Gemini/ Titan rocket system were used, with its 2 man crew.

I thought that if one builds underground then he achieves reasonable ambient temperature, can save on heating / air conditioning and should be praised for being so ecofriendly.
