If it was confusing to anyone, and I know it was for me when I first heard all these terms: An "Aux Input" aka "Aux Track" is a type of TRACK - with a fader etc. The signal gets to the Aux using a BUS. A BUS is an audio channel used to route signal throughout the digital mixer (think of a school bus taking all the kids (audio) to a destination). A SEND is an additional output that SENDS a COPY of the signal through a BUS to an Aux track. Different then routing the whole channel to an Aux Track. I hope this clears up anyone's confusions - people use these terms wrongly all the time or don't even know....

One question though.. When creating a new track, on the far right it has the option of toggling between "samples" or "clicks"? Can you explain what either does please?

Thank you for this. I would like you to state what the hot keys are for Windows when you state what they are for Mac, too. I started out with Trackers on the Amiga back about 1985 and i have use almost every type of Daw and tracker since. But i always swayed Pro Tools and now have a copy. I must say that i am very impressed with it. But i have no patience for tutorials because i know most already and need to know the routes to implement the tasks that other daws do, such as duplicating audio files and editing them and the tabs to send channels to Aux / sends and so fourth. Yet, i do find your tutorials quite good even as an advanced producer. A little refinement would be apt , though. Thank you, again.
Thanks for the information. I have been looking for this for myself for a while. A question what computer is good for working with protools. I have a 27 i mac. But sometimes it says cpu is slow.

Love the tutorials, keep it up!. But quick question, is doing the auxiliary channel the same as making a group with the tracks on the left? Does it do the same thing or does running them through an AUX give you more options?
I actually do both. I create a Submix for the drums using a stereo AUX track. This gives me the option of adjusting level for the kit, and by inserting a plug in across that track, it allows me to process the whole kit. It also allows me to see the level of the whole kit using the track's level meters. I then also create a drums group on the left hand side. I use this mainly for editing purposes, but you are right, it does allow me to mute/solo/adjust level for the whole kit as well. Hope that makes sense. Cheers from Jase.

What's the difference between creating an Aux input track and grouping numerous audio tracks?

on quock qestion if you dont mind. i have two mono audio tracks and one sterio audio track but i cant grab the mono ones and bring them to the sterio track like you do in the video, do i need to set somthing? is there any benifit of recording two mono tracks as opposed to recording one stereo track? again, love your work.
+ben barcham Hi Ben. So sorry it's taken so long to reply. Swamped here at AIM as we start our new trimester :-). I've been trying to work out the answer to your first question. I've been able to grab two mono audio regions into a stereo audio track without issues. The files don't have to be the same size or anything. You just need to make sure to grab the regions at the same time as you drag them. Also just check that you are dragging it onto an AUDIO track and not an AUX INPUT track. Let me know how you go. In answer to your second question, I often record to 2 mono tracks, just because I am often recording other mono tracks at the same time. There's no benefit of 2 mono tracks - except that it's consistent with other things I'm recording. Hope that makes sense! Cheers from Jase.

it turns out i was just trying to drag them to a aux track ( its always something simple lol) i have been on music/ pro tools hiatus for about three years so Im a bit rusty. but your videos are helping me a lot.

Hi there. really helpful videos thanks. Ive made a master fader track but nothing is going through that track. How do I run everything through the master fader?
+zer01ife Make sure that the Master Fader's slot is set to match your other tracks. It normally automatically gets created like that, but for some reason it may have gone awry with your session. Hope that helps.
great great tutorial. One question please. What is the purpose of Midi track. You didn't go much through it.
secondly, in the instrument track can i, for instance, add a guitar midi track and then transfer it into a piano track through (for example) ez keys plugin?
+Efraim Judah. Thanks for the comment. MIDI tracks are the same as Instrument tracks in that they both contain MIDI data. The BIG difference is that on an instrument track the MIDI data is only sent to the instrument that is inserted on that channel. You cannot insert an instrument on a MIDI track. With a MIDI track, you send the data to other "devices". That can include other instrument tracks, external MIDI gear or even rewired instruments. I didn't cover it too much in this tutorial as it is just slightly beyond the target audience of "beginner". I hope my answer makes sense.
How do you make different speeds for music videos to synch up in post? For example we're shooting in 23.98fps they want the track to play at 60fps which is sped up in real time but for post its slow mo. How do you make that track with the time code in pro tools?

great tutorial thanks a lot, just a quick feedback, the pace of the tutorial and the low voice makes the lessons somewhat boring sometime, i think if you prepare a script or so and increase the pace a bit it will be a lot better, i went through 2 videos and then i couldn't finish the 3rd one because the pace was very slow. but again very informative thanks a lot

Hi, I am really struggling with this Aux track thing. It is not happening like in your video. I created an Aux track and called it "harmony submix" for vocal harmonies, but when I try to route my multiple harmony tracks there, "harmony submix" is not one of the options. Were there steps missed in this video?? I just can't figure this out and I've been trying different things all afternoon.
+jordancooperlalala Check the following: 1) On the Aux Input track, identify what the input slot is for that channel. It should be set to a pair of buses (eg Bus 1-2). Note, it will not necessarily be what the track name is. 2) Then you assign the outputs of the individual vocal tracks to the same bus number. Hope that makes sense. Cheers from Jase
+jasondewilde Ok, I did what you said, and it sort of worked, but now I can't solo either the original tracks or the bus track. Is this normal? I can affect the volume of all the harmonies and I can mute it, but not solo.
+jordancooperlalala Ok, yep that makes sense. What is happening is that when you solo any track, ALL other tracks get muted. So when you solo an original track, the bus gets muted. When you solo the bus, the original tracks get muted. Either way you'll hear nothing ! So to prevent this annoying function, "solo safe" the submix track. Command click the solo button of the submix track and it will "grey out". This means that when you solo a channel, it will not mute. This should solve the problem. Let me know if there are still problems. Jase.
I am very new to pro tools and something is driving me nuts. If I go to import -> audio -> choose some tracks, then import them into a blank session, they go in, into their own separate tracks but when I play through it, the "cursor" keeps going. In other words it doesn't know when the song ends. How can I cut off all the blank space? Also, how would I get it to just continually loop the song?
Michael Henderson Hi Michael. Pro Tools will continue to play forever until you tell it to stop, so that's normal. To get it to play JUST the song, make a "selection" (ie highlight) that is the length of the song. Pro tools will play the length of the selection. To get it to loop, right click the "play" button. You want to see a green arrow on the play button. Let me know if there's more questions and I'll cover more of this stuff in part 6.

This really is excellent, but I'm imagining people with misophonia and other sound sensitivities (like me) are struggling with some of the high frequency close-mic-ed mouth sounds by the instructor (and the "ok"s over and over). Though the people who love ASMR are probably happy as clams. Maybe run a low pass filter through the audio to cut some that?
When I change the colours of my mixing channels, the whole mixing channel doesn't change colour like in the video, only the little tab you click change colour. How to I make it so the whole mixing channel will change colour and not only the tab below?
+Pier Sam Hi there. When you select the colour for your track, there's a slider called "Saturation". Just turn that up and the colour will be spread across the whole mixer channel. Let me know if there's any further questions. Cheers from Jase.
Just one complaint, MIDI tracks are primarily used with external hardware instruments whereas Instrument tracks for virtual instruments. This is an important distinction that I think is overlooked...

Ok, the first tutorial started off very promising, but the subsequent tutorials have been nothing short of a cluster*ck.
Too much digression, too much minutiae - plus, you're skipping over things which might help matters make more sense.
There's no logical structure to what you're doing and it's far too confusing.
You are assuming that everybody knows the basic stuff and moving forward continuously. You have the pace because you are using it, but you have to be a bit slower while teaching it. It isn't helping me.
I know. It took me 3 videos to say that sir. You should've mentioned where you're clicking, what tools you're using before actually using them. For the most of it, It didn't help me. Thanks anyway.
