A bit different, Japans economy has no resources of their own then and now. China has all the resources. Japan only attack US because it sanctioned all it's resources that it could not get itself. So they decided to attack with whatever that's left of their resources and maybe deal a blow to help the axis. China and US has too many things going for each other and are too intertwine with economics and money to play the war path. That's why even if they invade taiwan, I believe US will be able to do much if assist at all.
It wasn’t exactly out of nowhere as the US froze Japanese assets on July 26, 1941, and placed an embargo on exports of oil and gas to Japan on Aug 1, 1941.

As someone living in SEA, where we have better understanding of world affairs, a fairer views of the current going on, the twist of the what is reported is unfair to the truth. For one, USA do not own Taiwan except that the current government of Taiwan is subservient to America, for political expediency. Unlike America, China is not a war mongering nation. Besides, the fall of any government is not the fall of a Nation. The sovereignty of a country is decided by her citizens and no one, not even outside political instigaters, can change this fact.

This is not a time for foolishness in diplomacy. We are on the brink of a nuclear WW3 with several nuclear powers, including Rogue States like Iran (might be nuclear already or soon to be) and North Korea. Maybe Biden should top it off by visiting North Korea and at a huge meeting of the North Korean people call Kim Jong Un the grandson of a Japanese woman. 1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it should be implemented.
3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. The Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS. Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).
4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues.....
5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law. Today the PRC also become China’s only legal govt recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.
Please refer to President Jimmy Carter's Speech on Relations with China.
6) Therefore, according to international law, international reality, and the wishes of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, Taiwan should return to PRC and the PRC have every rights to protect it's sovereign integrity.
7) This meeting, Xi Jinping said to Biden:
- China will definitely unify Taiwan but China has no intention to do it by force in near future.
- China asked US to stop selling arms to Taiwan and help China unify Taiwan peacefully.
So are you gonna mention how the majority of Taiwanese people do not want to unify with China? or do you believe it should be done forcefully without the will of the Taiwanese people?

It is the territory of all Chinese people.

China needs Taiwan and not just for security or national pride. They need Taiwan for its multi trillion dollar microchip industry and for the economic and military advantages that it will give them. China’s economy is starting to struggle and its population is starting to decline. They are now encouraging families to have THREE children to help with their population decline. Adding Taiwan’s economy along with control of the world’s microchips will put them in a position of great power. China is not militarily strong enough to take Taiwan right now, but in 10 years who knows.

Let's analyze the situation. China desires reunification. The USA is against this. Best scenario for China, is peaceful reunification. This is the worst scenario for the USA. Second best scenario for China, is reunification through military means. This is more desirable for the USA, since they could capitalize on this to get more nations on their side. The worst case scenario for China is to have a completely independent island of Taiwan, which is the best case scenario for USA. With the present trajectory China will pass the USA in military strength within the next couple of decades. The best thing for China is to be patient.
