Imagine that you are in a band, and then you hear that David Goddamned Bowie wants your request to cover your song. I think the pixies were heavily influenced by Bowie. I can only imagine the “holy shit, is this real?” reaction from Frank and the others…
I have a strong suspension from the album "Heathen than crossing to Reality than the Next Day and finally Black Star " david bowie was probably diagnosed with cancer but the beginning stage of him being sick . I listen to all his albums leading up to his final album I think he was warning us through his music he was sick. from Heathen to Black Star the lyrics and sound got darker. R.I.P Dave Bowie. thank you so much for all your talents and music if wasn't for " Life on Mars and Rock and Roll Suicide " I wouldn't have experienced your masterpieces.
You funny thing. He did Heathen and the other albums after the WOT began. They are grim, but that's got more to do with Bowie's inner running commentary on global recession and associated politics than with any narcissistic preoccupation about his own health. Cactus is an older song written by somebody else during pre-WOT grunge years, Bowie covered it because he probably tuned into its underlying prison and desert themes and wished to appropriate those. Sometimes Bowie just sang any old thing that popped into his head, including the lyrics and thoughts of other artists.
Yes, I don't see any indication that his own death was the focus on "Heathen." However, he did see immense destruction up close in the city in which he lived on 9/11, and the theme of wrestling with faith, the "problem of evil" occurs in several of the songs. I know that it's not popular to say for a lot of Bowie fans, but I think that he struggled with religious questions, and if anything of himself died on Heathen it was the possibility of belief.
he recorded Heathen in the summer before 9/11 actually. and Bowie fans have no problem with the fact that he struggled with religious questions, since he talked of it in many interviews. Word on a Wing and I would be your Slave are two songs that he has said are him exploring belief. Not to mention Loving the Alien and more
We were all shocked when he passed away, as very few people knew that he was sick. I read that he was sick for about 18 months prior to his passing, which means that he wasn't sick when he made Heathen and Reality. He may already had been sick when he made The Next Day and definitely when he made Black Star, which I can not bring myself to listen to or even buy the CD. Him not being here is way too much heartbreak and the CD will always be a gloomy reminder (not to mention that Black Star is kind of scary to me...) BTW- the song Slow Burn is about 9/11
I adore the original but ya know it's refreshing to hear the song in this form, especially the drums. Don't sound as brash/clumsy on this version. Not that the brashness of Surfer Rosa is something to be disliked, if anyone other than Steve Albini had produced it, it just wouldn't be the same album.
