- Time Consuming Ep #78 deals with the beloved Shakti !
This Indian fusion band, led by John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain are a pinnacle of musical excellence, fusion, jazz, Hindustani and Carnatic music and are simply phenomenal.

Choking from depression, laying on a couch crying, a rythm analysis of my favorite band since I was 8 years old made me smile. thank you. ❤
With both 40 and 30 being divisible by 5, I was almost disappointed no quintuplets showed up. Almost. Mostly, I was relieved!
While we're on the topic of complicated Grammy-winning songs, I feel like The Alien should be mentioned. (Even though I'm really pissed that after years of making awesome music, they get the Grammy for such a mediocre song)
Discovered Shakti within the last year after Sungazer played Vital Transformation by Mahavishnu Orchestra on their tour with Plini last year. John McLaughlin is a nutty genius. I'll have to look into the others in this band
Yogev, as you know I love your videos (and your music). But I'm a little mystified why you decided to analyse a piece using Carnatic rythmic structures by using western concepts instead of looking at it from the perspective of Carnatic talas. Of course, you can do that, but it's not likely that the musicians themselves are approaching it from a "time signature + tempor" perspective ....
well, michael bolton won a grammy, so i'm not sure they really mean that much
Shakti was the group that got me into carnatic music, and non-western music in general. Forced me to rethink a ton of stuff. I'm so happy this is a topic for one of your videos!
The listener dictates nothing, and thats the beautiful part about it. If the tempo was meant to be unchanged, which I would argue was the intent, the listener just gets to enjoy the ride they get put on!
It is impossible for me to hear the intro as anything other than 7-7-6, with a 4-tuple over the 6 count. Beat is at 192. Sorry man, 5/4 is a big ask.
I love how this is definitely NOT a Meshuggah song but you still use the card board 8 string guitar. 😂
I seriously thought when did meshuggah win a Grammy, dayumn
I love metric modulations and this is just a phenomenal example of it. Great video!
this is very good explanation and example of metric modulation. thnx!
Yogev! Much love brother
Awesome video as always :) thank you for all of the work you put into these! Would love to see you break down another Car Bomb track if it ever tickles your fancy. Or maybe a Pound track?
Wow. This is genuinely impressive
Very enjoyable and informative. Thank you for all the hard work and making it look/sound easy.
Such meticulous and inspired work you do, thank you!!! This was the most surprising and entertaining course. I’m used to your deconstructions of metal song beats but this genre and your body double playing the tabla are wild!
Thanks Yogev for all the wonderful work you have done. As a guitarist, your videos have made me realize the world of rhythm can be just as complex, diverse, and fascinating as the melodic/harmonic world.
Congrats Yogev! ☺
