  • Time Consuming Ep #36: Karnivool are an amazing Prog Metal band from Australia and this song deals with a concept that fits very nicely with last weeks Chaabi video. What does a Moroccan groove and an Australian band have in common? Besides originated in places I really want to go to?

I actually asked Drew Goddard (Karnivool guitarist) on Facebook after learning about the confusion since I initially believed the song was in 3/4 when I first heard it. He confirmed it's 4/4.
In my opinion though, the bridge ("let's reset it all") with Steve's stack/china hits is so obviously in 3/4 it throws you off. Drew also gave credit to Jon's bass hitting the backbeat perfectly which further sold the illusion that the song is in 3/4.

The most complex is the "noob" version... It is not only polymetric, but it is also polyrhythmic and contains displacement. To write it on a staff it would be necessary to use nested tuplets. The "advanced" version is a 4/4 written with triplets. Karnivool rules, great video bro 🙂

Rick Beato's break down of Goliath is amazing, and he talks about the insane time signature in that song at great depth.
    Nice break down

I only copped the real time signature listening to the acoustic version they do because it's way more obvious there.

Great video as always! Karnivool is awesome, and the drummers is probably the best of the group, which is saying something! I'd love to see you make a video on Goliath. If I remember correctly, it's based on the offbeats of 7/4, and is an absolutely delightful mindfuck of a groove
