Great Analysis! I have a theory about the fifth vocal line: I think it was positioned so that the word "have" lines up with the chord change. That way this vocal line can have one pitch per word without any clashing tones when it crosses the bar line.
Please check out the band Intronaut! A lot of their songs could make great Time Consuming videos! Some songs I’d recommend are Fast Worms, Sul Ponticello, Cubensis and Killing Birds with Stones. Edit: Didn’t think I’d find so many Intronaut fans in the wild wth
I would love to see "beneath the white rainbow" from their last album. It's has a very strong hamasian feel to it, and I think its my favorite song from them.
Dude, thank you for putting all the effort and time into these videos! I really appreciate that you do all the "graphics" by hand with drawings and paperwork. Amazing! Also the explanations a easy to follow. Really good job! 👏
I love these videos because they give me new things to listen to. The video on Clipping was only one of many. I've always found counting time signatures and overlapping signatures fascinating. Whenever one of your videos come up, I get excited and it's the first thing I look at. I like Haken (been looking at their stuff over the past 6 months and realized I've been missing out). I've know of them for a while, but never paid attention before. Thanks, Yogev. Love your channel.
Duuuuuuuuude... what a huge leap forward in your visual language. I'm a melody guy, polymeter comes to me through flow and your new melodic additions visually & sonicly made this whole thing go down like butter. You're the cutting edge of rhythm analysis. 🔥
The "arts and craft" portion alone of your videos is amazing, I'd definitely would not have the patience for it :) Thanks for a great explanation on an amazing song!
So happy to see you talking about Haken, and about Somebody especially! It’s been a favorite of mine for years, but there were still layers that I hadn’t consciously noticed (vox V woooaa), so thanks for that. Also congrats for getting out of your comfort zone with the singing
Every single one of their albums are so vastly different from one another, that they cannot be compared. So they really havent peaked anywhere, as there is nothing to compare
I always loved this song and especially this section. And I thought it was really catchy and it motivated me to sing along. I never took the time to anaylze it though. Thanks for that 👍
I got into Haken in 2020 and was blown away by their first four albums. I've always liked this part of Somebody, but I've been hearing Vox III's melody wrong this entire time. It sounds like Vox V has a harmony too.
Awesome. A simpler version of those over-the-bar vocals is in that sick section of Specular Reflection/Extremophile Elite by BTBAM! Always loved how it sounds
UltraPolymeter sections are a good way to add variety to a track, and if you are an electronic producer they are pretty easy to make. I have some in my 1st album, tho that album aged considerably compared to my latest but I'll include another one in the 6th that I'm working on.
Yogev, you may have meant B natural in the second half of the first guitar melody you showed on the edit. It’s correct on your big boards afterwards. Otherwise amazing! So great to see Haken getting more academic attention.
So happy to see you back and covering new songs and bands! That's amazing! :D Looking forward to seeing what you will come up with next. Maybe cover some of Leprous new songs? :D :D :D :D
2:00 Shouldn't the melody in bars 3 and 4 start with B natural? At least that's what is sounds like then. And also 6:43. The second note in the keyboard line was E (and sounded E), but for some reason there's an A on the board in that place.
also, we previously did a cover of Haken's Cockroach King, and we had trouble nailing the part that goes back and forth between 10/8 and 9/8. I was inspired by your channel to made a video explaining the aksak there, how the different intstrumental (in our case vocal) layers go together, it was really fun (and exhausting, I didn't even have to make it clear for a general audience and it was still so much work, how do you do this crap aghh 😂)
My choir covers Haken's Somebody, and in that section the stranger changed the bass so I could sing it. I sing the 9 syllable version, and the first 2 parts I have 4 notes per bar (half, dotted quarter, half, dotted quarter) My lyrics would repeat after 9 bars, but instead after 8 bars my bass changes to something with 8 notes per bar (¼ ¼ ⅛ ¼ ¼ ¼ ⅛ ¼). So now, what should've been one more bar until restarting, becomes half a bar, so we technically don't restart. So 5 bars later (half + 4.5) I finally start the line on the one. At that point I have 3 bars left, so I never finish a loop. The stranger also added a role where a singer sings on all off-beats, so 7 per bar, repeating on bar 9. We got this line ingrained in our head so hard that we sometimes sing other songs with "I wish I could have been somebody". example: יונתן הקטן I wish I - could have been somebody I wish I could have been some - body I wish I could have been somebody I wish I could have been somebody I wish I could have - been somebo- dy I wish I could
Yogev, I really think you are worrying about your singing too much. That’s very decent, and we are here not for the vocal lessons. And you are brave enough to sing! I would had never sing in a video, which will be watched by thousands of people. Great work!
I've been wondering what to call those "lyric cycles". There's one in The Books' "Beautiful People" that uses a 5-syllable lyric against a 6-note melody. If you used lyrics, melody, and rhythm, you could create a three-layer cycle with a single performer. For example, a 5-syllable lyric, using a 4-note melody, and a 2-2-3 rhythm. The cycle length would be lcm(5, 4, 3) * ((2+2+3)/3) = 140 subdivision pulses.
Seeing as you are in to Haken, why not take the vocal insanity of their song "Puzzle Box" into consideration for another video soon? I am to this day completely baffled that they manage to perform that live.
Sorry to nitpick when I'm not even done the video, but @1:55 I believe the initial Bb on the 3rd and 4th repetitions is either wrongly notated or played, it sounds like a B? Other than than loving the video, looking forward to the rest 😅 edit: everywhere else it's a B so we're def all on the same page :D thanks for all your hard work with this stuff Yogev, love the videos!
How long did that stop motion intro take to make? That's neat lol. Great video, Im not a musician at all but I love breakdowns like this. Awesome channel my dude 🎉
When I was watching the "stupid joke" part I found that I too am extremely handsome and I am a prog drummer as well. On another note, I did not know Haken. I went ant listen to them first and I absolutely love the sound. Love your channel!
Amazing! Thanks for taking the time to feature our music!
Yall are insane!!
Finally! the day has come! haken x Yogev!!!
Yo we have the same pfp
and this song, the most overlooked song on the mountain, it doesn't have big riff moments, but man all the elements are peak prog
I’m glad you’re covering Haken! The first time I heard this section of Somebody it blew my mind
Ah yes, Please keep Going on the haken road, they have tons of great rythmic stuff! 🤩
Haken is my favorite band. Happy to see you covering them! They're incredible, and have lots of crazy rhythmic stuff
this has always been one of the coolest parts by haken in my mind. if you make more haken videos, it would be very welcomed!
Yogev puts good effort into the charts despite his channel size.
Textbook overqualified for the job.
Hi man, doesn't matter if 1 person is listening or 1,000,000, quality is top priority.
You deserve it !
I loved trying to sing Somebody, glad you're tackling it!
Dude your singing is fine. Does the job well doesn’t have to be fancy but it works
OHHH MY FUCKING GOD finally some love for this song, the most criminally underrated haken song
Great Analysis!
I have a theory about the fifth vocal line: I think it was positioned so that the word "have" lines up with the chord change. That way this vocal line can have one pitch per word without any clashing tones when it crosses the bar line.
Also it sounds super cool :)
The material of your content is pure luxury. This is definitely much appreciated and, in cases like this one, more than needed.
He should, Intronaut are my favorite band
@@JRam998 Nice to find another intronaut fan in the wild! They are soo underrated
Fast worm mid section is my ringtone
@@leonardotiezzi2904 understandable haha
Matt Lynch is a beast!
Finaly, Yogev tackles the best band in the world. Utterly brilliant work, sir. Some good laughs, too. A+
I've always loved how smart that part of Somebody is, which may be my favorite Haken song ever ! So cool to see it here !
I would love to see "beneath the white rainbow" from their last album. It's has a very strong hamasian feel to it, and I think its my favorite song from them.
haha piano go duh DEEEE duh dayn dayn da DEEEE da day duh
Yeaaah more Haken stuff pleaaase ! 😍
Dude, thank you for putting all the effort and time into these videos! I really appreciate that you do all the "graphics" by hand with drawings and paperwork. Amazing! Also the explanations a easy to follow. Really good job! 👏
Thanks so much !
I love the "analog" graphic style, it's super fun !
7:55 Look at Thomas Haake, thats where all of that stuff has gone. A tribute the unpredictable god.
Haken’s the best 🤘 They’re heavily influenced by Gentle Giant, especially shown when they do these layered vocal sections.
This is my personal favourite song of the album. Super emotional and well thought out !
Would love to see more Haken. Great work!
Haken is a great underrated band definitely, the 3 last records are too awesome, saw them live and it was fantastic
This part is one of my most favourite pieces of music of all time. It's so incredibly well written!
I love these videos because they give me new things to listen to. The video on Clipping was only one of many. I've always found counting time signatures and overlapping signatures fascinating. Ohhh this makes me very happy !
I love that clippin song, it's crazy !
Man I love Haken, glad to see you tackle them and somebody is such a perfect fit for your analysis.
Duuuuuuuuude... what a huge leap forward in your visual language. I'm a melody guy, polymeter comes to me through flow and your new melodic additions visually & sonicly made this whole thing go down like butter. You're the cutting edge of rhythm analysis. 🔥

Handsome man strikes again! Thanks for this, I love this song

Also congrats for getting out of your comfort zone with the singing
Man, I'm surprised people haven't left the channel the moment ANY sort of melody comes out of my mouth hahah
Omg, i love this song, thank you. Do more haken!
Nice stuff, thanks! looking forward to see more progress groups.
ive listened to haken so much as soon as you said "have you ever wondered" i thought you were going to say "have you ever wished to be somebody"
This is some pretty early Santa! Somebody is one of those few life-changing songs out there
3:29 i love singing along to this part
10:31 you still have that epic "phantoms" graphic! wow!
Oh hell yeh.
I have the 'Bleed' boards of the other wall !
They peaked with The Mountain. What a fantastic album.
Every single one of their albums are so vastly different from one another, that they cannot be compared. So they really havent peaked anywhere, as there is nothing to compare
I guess they knew it was their peak and that's why they called it The Mountain
I always loved this song and especially this section. And I thought it was really catchy and it motivated me to sing along. I never took the time to anaylze it though. Thanks for that 👍
i take this video as a recommendation to this song, amazing piece of art! cheers from brazil, love your channel dude!

Mind blowing ❤❤
This has been so great, Yogev
BTBAM also does the sort of lyrical isorhtyhm thing in Specular Reflection and Extremophile Elite. Isorhtyhms in general are a lot of fun to write.
Amazing stuff, ver gentle giant
UltraPolymeter sections are a good way to add variety to a track, and if you are an electronic producer they are pretty easy to make.

The Mountain is a masterpiece!
Your honestly a good singer!
This man is a freakin genius!!! 👍👍👍👍
Weirdly was my favourite off that album years ago. Never thought I'd see an analysis of it!
huuuuge job!!
Hell yeah its Dopemass already 🤘
So glad you're doing Haken!!
So cool! You have the best breakdowns of rhythm! Could you do a breakdown of Monomyth by animals as leaders? A lot of crazy rhythm stuff in that song.
Would love to have a video about the break in Puzzle Box with the cool glitchy beat
Reminds me of Happy with What You Have to Be Happy With by King Crimson
Very cool!
Incredible stuff as always man!
Yogev what a joy have you back painting and showing this coloured tables of rhythms, awesome as always
Thank you so much 😀

Happy you enjoy the stuff !
"That's a good sign." LOL
Haken was the first band I saw where people had to sing lower because their concert volume is only as high as needed and does not blow your ears
sounds like they got inspiried by listening to king crimsons three of a perfect pair album!
Now we know the secret to drumming in a prog band.
