Was paying 500€ a month for a room while working in Malta. Nothing as bad as this, but the other room had the exit of the AC from the folks below leading into his room right next to the bed - - they were boiling him like a lobster.
Appliances were nice superficially but shoddy craftsmanship. Flushing the toilet didn't really work, there was a trick to it. The shower was a small L-shaped tub with no curtain and flooded the room. Many of the locks were really rough so you'd struggle to turn the keys; my flatmate ended up locked in the bathroom. I had to throw him a key through the window from my room as fortunately all of our windows just opened up into this weird empty shaft of about 2m² between houses.
And after I left my flatmate messaged me to let me know that the landlord was putting up temporary walls around the living area right next to the open kitchen to rent out as another full-priced room.

Jeez… some of the stories you hear from people are just terrible. The exploitation these landlords get away with is nothing short of criminal. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience but hopefully there were some good memories too and you can always slag your mate for getting stuck in the toilet 🤷🏼‍♂️😅

When I came to Ireland in 2007 it wasn’t much better. I viewed a room for €750 a month with a thick red carpet, fireplace with a microwave on the mantle piece as the kitchen and a tiny shower built in a wardrobe - no light. Toilet shared in the hallway. Coming from Germany I couldn’t believe it! Worse than a third world country.

That sounds unreal! You really came just as we hit a recession as well 🥲

@@BlueprintBlogger In the end I had really good luck! I could rent a big room in a Georgien Townhouse from an architect lecturing in Dundalk who only would come home to Dublin during the weekend. During the week I had the house for myself. I really liked the architecture! The proportion and layout of the rooms. We don’t have this style in Germany so it was a very nice experience for me.

A friend of mine was paying 750 euros for an 'apartment' that looked like a corridor. The conditions were so bad that I felt sorry for her. I left Dublin, Ireland in 2019, today, my 60sqm apartment is cheaper than the room I used to pay for.

I feel sorry for her hearing about it years later even 😢 I hope you ended up moving somewhere nice 👌🏻
