”Hey Leroy…” is at #38 today and will peak at #36 next week. This will be Jimmy Castor’s last top 40 hit until “Troglodyte (Cave Man)”, by the Jimmy Castor Bunch, goes to #6 in 1972. Perhaps “Troglodyte…” or “The Bertha Butt Boogie (pt. 1)” (#16 in ’75) were 2 of the 500 or 600 songs he had written here in ’67?.....probably not. The song was also used in the 2013 movie “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
There are a lot of the ’67 regulars clapping along in the stands today. For those following along at home, how many of these regulars (or others I missed) can you spot?: Mick Tisherman, Toni Kashenoff, John Pollard, Dan DelCampos, Norm Mull, Peggy Waggoner, Don Sanuskar, Frank Vanderpuil, Judy Michaud, Bernie Kates, Penny Penwarden, Theodosia Dayton, Roni Menacker, Mike Klein, Rick Klein, Herb Neil, David Bodkin, Frankie Riggilio, Leslye Vodden and Gary Hendrickson, with Robbin Morris on the cowbell.
Coming Up Next: We stay in 1967 as Frank Vanderpuil talks to a “Gang” leader on the Hollywood Hotline about their new top 10 hit.
This song was a monster hit in New York in late 1966 thru 1967, on our soul station WWRL! It was a constant play honoring the ongoing Latin Soul genre at time. What a wonderful time it was. Viva 1967! It was great to see this gem of a clip with Jimmy's appearance on AB. Peaceful journey, Jimmy.
I'm from the same part of the country as @Classic63, and this song also played in regular rotation on Top 40 powerhouse WABC!
Around '74, Jimmy Castor did a free show at Queensboro Community College. The album he was promoting was titled "The Everything Man". And infeed he was! He sang, danced, played sax, percussion...he was definitely "The Everything Man"!
I remember kids, including myself running through the neighborhood singing this one......
@George Swift Go ask Bertha Butt and her sisters.........LOL
Oh this is a treat! This is one good way to perform an instrumental track alone, get audience participation! The kids really seemed to have fun here, and I like how they placed him in front of the kids instead of on the stage. Great clip!
I love when AB broke from the norm. Not often if ever was a performance done with the cameras in the opposite direction.
Dom Falance I love that rare different camera angle too.
That was so fun to watch the participation of the kids!!! Thank you Aaron! Nice shot of me upper left with a big YAWN!!!
Peggy, I've got to ask...in some of the bleacher shots you seem so out of it, like you are dead tired or miffed about something.
@@RAYFORDHENDERSON-dc2op The dance floor is where its at! No one wants to be left in the bleachers...
@@peggela I hear that, I have the names of dozens of AB attendees who never even dance on any video. I dont ever remember being too shy to dance.
Things changed with Jimmy C grew his afro out a decade later.
Wow, this is such a joy-bomb for me. I love how he hands off the cowbell to the girl in the front and how happy she is to play it, and oh, the CLAPPING. The clapping and swaying just makes me explode with happiness. I love how, when they lose the rhythm in the middle, they just keep going, swaying back and forth, and then catch up with it by clapping double-time. So gorgeous. If you have more stuff like this, please post it!
Such a great loving comment! Thank you for writing that @The Normal Fauna Channel, featuring Andee Joyce"! Your reaction made me love this clip even more, which didn't seem possible. And when Dick Clark says at the end - "I love your assistant there. That's a bit of all right!" What a kind genuine person he was!
I heard from an insurance agent named Leroy today and it reminded md of this song. Its bedn YEARS!
Just so wayyyy cool ft. the kids in the bleachers. The wide angle shot makes me think this was taped at the Vine Street Studios and even more likely The Hollywood Palace (and the air date puts today's clip right smack dab in the middle of the Swing Dance Contest)! Love it!
Hey Don, I saw you man. I know this was a fun performance for you.
@@thruthealcove Hey Kevin I was only 15 at the time -- wouldn't be 16 until a couple of more weeks. Like you said, those performances that included the kids in the bleachers were always a blast!
Oh look, an integrated audience on American Bandstand. I guess the times were a'changing.
yes, not like soul train.
The Jimmy Castor Awareness is now in Effect! Check Out the Documentry by his Son, Jimmy Castor Jr. "I Promise To Remember"
Just the right amount of cowbell!----But seriously, I was in my mid-late teens when this came out (Yes, I'm from NYC), and even now, it's impossible to sit still when hearing this song!
Loved "Hey, Leroy". What a great vibe.
i am watching cuz i heard it while watching the movie, Wolf of wall street
That ultra perm in his hair was the real star of the show ... Fried and layed to the side ....
Loved that cow bell feel! I spotted several regulars. Especially Don and Frank, Judy M buf didn't see Peggy. Thank you Aaron! Can't wait until next week!!!
I could see Peggy on the far left in the beginning of the clip.
@@TheArabchaser Found her!!! Thanx James. She was yawning!!! Hahahaha!!!
I think Frank was, too.
@@TheArabchaser 😄
Theodosia Dayton was sure enjoying herself. She seems like a nice person.
Loved the clip especially seeing Frank and Don. Thanks
I can't wait for the next one when we get to hear Frank Vanderpuil's voice!
Yes..this song will be inbeded in your head...calling your mama
...still have my cherished '45 of this great dance record... so cool ;o)
I remember seeing this as an eleven year old! Thanks for posting.
More cowbell!
Rockout old chap
Spanky and Our Gang!
Amazing
The interactive participation just killed me because it was the coolest part of watching AB! Good Jimmy Castor song.
Regarding the "gang" for the next clip, I would have to go with Spanky and Our Gang. 😎
@C Hoc They were having lots of fun while reacting to this song.😄
Awesome @youcandancetoit! I feel like this could have been a scene from the early 2000s NBC show, “American Dreams”...thank you!
It does have that kind of feel to it, now that you mention it. Great comment, thank you Nicolas Harrison.
Actually no it wasn't. The Jimmy Castor Bunch hit with Troglodyte in 1971.
And later with Bertha Butt Boogie.
I always liked this number, which my. oldest brother got hooked on & bought the 45..Odd lip sync,to say the least!
This was my friend's Dad. She and her brother look exactly like him.
April And Jimmy Jr.
when AB was fun
Just saw Jared Kushner in the crowd.
there is a blonde looks like Julia Styles in the mix...maybe a time traveller/dancer.
“You be telephone FUCKING TERRORRRRRIST!!!!! NOW LET’S KNOCK THIS MUTHAFUCKA’ OUTTA THE PARK!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH”
Clapping off beat
Very much so. They tried to catch up but just couldn't quite make it. Props for the try, though. You could tell it was the type of beat they weren't all totally familiar with.
Was he of Puerto Rican or Cuban descent? I'm guessing Puerto Rican.
It’s lacking cow bell
More cowbell Robyn
Both dead in 2012.
If it wasn't a track he's lip-syncing, that rhythmically challenged audience would've mixed up the musicians.

Yes that is indeed her
@@Lewy1900 It's her grandmother.
