Sage Payload Fly Rod Review

  • Sage has released a rod designed to cast large flies and fight big fish. The PAYLOAD features a rugged design and extra-large componentry to handle heavy lines and wrangle the largest freshwater and saltwater species. Sage's classic Konnetic Technology and a strong midsection and powerful tip section make this rod efficient and highly functional when casting heavy rigs. A softer butt section increases rod leverage capabilities and a shorter overall rod length adds to the rod's lifting power. The butt section on the PAYLOAD is forgiving to allow anglers to utilize the powerful tip and midsection without compromising casting stroke. Incredible power, incredible capabilities, and incredible performance. Watch our review to see if the Payload lives up to the hype.

Are you interested in the new Payload? What types of fish would you want to use it to catch?

Trident Fly Fishing I’m going to give the 10 wt a test cast first , if I like it I plan to fish for snakeheads with it .

The Sage Payload its maybe the best option for Golden Dorado anglers, this rod has all the features required in a very competitive price. In Argentina we crave to try this rod on the river with some fish. Best regards !

I'm seeing visions of big Snook connected to this rod, bent like a horseshoe, hauling their bodies out of mangrove trees... hell's bay, Florida will probably be my first stop if I get my hands on this thing. The 10 wt model seems just right !

Ben does the best fly rod reviews on UA-cam. In my opinion. Thanks.

That Sage Payload should also be interesting for fishing at the coast-line of the Baltic Sea on seatrout, under windy conditions, I guess?
Interesting test as always und good to see the less wobbling of the rod tip on powerful castings due to the Konnetic Technology, next to perfection.

Really Interesting review. Would like to see a comparision / shootout with the Thomas Exocett SS.

I use Rio Bonefish 8WF on my 8wt Payload and it casts beautifully from 30-90'. Spend some time casting a Payload and you find out all it can do.

The Payload is certainly versatile enough to handle a variety of lines.

I recently purchased the Sage Payload 6wt and wondered what line and reel you would recommend pairing with it? Thanks!

Sage recommends 200-230 grains on that rod. I'd go with a 6wt Rio Outbound Short.

im reading that the weights on these are labeled slightly under. I tested out the 6 and 7 and the 6 felt like an 7 and so on. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @Tridentflyfishing
      @Tridentflyfishing  Рік тому

If you look at the grain window for the 6wt (200-230), that puts you in the wheelhouse of shooting head style lines weighted for 6wt rods (EX. SA Titan Taper 6wt is 210; Outbound Short 6wt is 235)

Since this replaced the Sage bass fly rods they produced 10 years ago, I have the smallmouth rod. If you had to choose one fly line for the old Sage smallmouth line what would it be. I fish creeks and lakes for smallmouth with my smallie Sage rod. My fly line that came with the rod, was from what I understand, made specifically for that rod. No traditional weight was given with that line only depicted the line as 290 grains. So what I’m asking what weight line should I be using for this rod?

Look at the Rio Jungle lines or maybe a Big Nasty. I have been told that the SA Titian Bass Taper works well. Good luck.

Would you bump up a line size even with rio OB short ?

I have 2 sage bolt rods in 7 and 8 and the sage musky. The ideal line for sage bolt is the outbound short. For an 8 wt the head is 330 grains. Seems crazy but it is butter. Personally I think this payload is like the bolt but check w sage.

I like his honesty but the rod was made to chuck big flies with minimal false casts also to water haul large amounts of line off the water then to shoot it right back on the water , his perspective to me is that from a guy that doesn’t chuck meat flies .

I think so, he seems to not do tarpon or bass fishing.

I talk about this Alot when it comes to Tarpon (or any other dark water) fishing in the glades. Minimal false casts. Lay your line out, water load that sucker and send it.
