  • With all of us in quarantine, I've noticed that my own macaw, Jinx, has become wayyyyyy needy... only wanting to interact with me as his sole source of entertainment and I know I'm not the only one experiencing an EXTRA NEEDY BIRD because you guys email in complaining about the same thing.
Since Jinx has shown a lot less interest in toys lately I decided to make a video that I've wanted to create for a long time (and it super requested by soooo many of you!): how to TRAIN your bird to play with toys!
So here it is, and Jinx was here to help me through it! For some behind the scenes in the making of this video, check out my OH FLOCK series on Patreon where I show how I work through issues with my flock in completely unedited training sessions here: / birdtricks

Unfortunately I am too old (67) to get a bird. I have 3 spoiled rescue cats and multiple health problems. So my life is often disrupted and I have to bow out and rest and revive. I see that I could not be a dependable bird mother.😿 I am glad I researched parrots before actually adopting one, because I see what a responsibility they are. 🦜❤️🦜 Still, I love them and am so thankful for all of your excellent videos-I get to love the birds vicariously and see how smart, unique and beautiful these wonderful creatures are. I especially love watching them free fly.
Thank you for all that you do for birds and their parents.

I saw a comment on another bird channel that Birdtricks focuses more on improving the lives of the people than their birds...and this video is a perfect example of why that person was wrong! Everything Jamie and Dave teach has to do with improving the *relationship* between the bird and the owner, building trust, clear communication, and independence...and to me, it's obvious that that makes life better for *both* parties.

My 60 year old Amazon was terrified of anything I would put in or near his cage and it took me a good two years to properly introduce him to playing with toys. I had (finally) discovered Birdtricks and quickly target trained him. Then I got the simplest bird toy from the pet shop (four coloured blocks on a single strand of sisal rope) and hung it on the outside of his cage. He freaked out and got pretty pissed off with me, but then I got the target stick and clicker out and he got a little more interested. I targeted him for a while, ignoring the toy. When he was completely focusing on the targeting and forgetting the toy, I slowly targeted him closer to the toy until he had to reach behind the toy to get to the target. I ended the session with a jackpot after he touched the toy by accident.
I then hung the toy in the cage and.... he refused to go near it.... About a month later I gave up on that toy and got him a different one. A little bigger, with square and round beads and cotton rope. He absolutely loved it! Completely destroyed it within a few days.
I've gotten him several different types of toys, but he just doesn't really know what to do with them, so I'll be training that soon as well. But anything with wooden beads... He just loves to sit on top of his cage, all fluffed up and munching on those beads. Even had a favourite bead at some point. A donut shaped blue bead that he had broken off but he kept climbing down to retrieve it and chew on it some more.
The four coloured blocks are still being shunned, but I've integrated them in a big scrap toy (leftovers put together :p )

    • @Texas240
      @Texas240 4 роки тому +7

I'm no expert, but it sounds like he would enjoy foraging type toys, where he has to tear them up to get at a treat inside.
He'll know the treat is inside, so that's motivation for him to get interested in them and foraging is a natural behavior. You can reduce and control which foraging toys have a treat once he gets the idea that playing with them is fun, so he doesn't eat too much while playing.
Oh, ironic. Just as I'm typing this Jamie starts talking about foraging.

I had my own parrot became overtly needy and attached to me too, to the point he would get separation anxiety if I was away for even an hour and pluck himself until he was bleeding. This situation didn't just suddenly come up overnight, it gradually got worse over the course of many years until I didn't know how I could reverse his behavior. It was such a stressful time, I didn't know what else to do to help him. I made the very hard decision about 4 years ago to surrender him to a parrot rehab facility. I personally visited the location in-person and paid for his vet fees. It wasn't much but it was the last bit of love and care that I could offer to ensure his future. Last I heard, he was becoming more socialized in the rehab facility and eventually got adopted by a good owner. He weighs heavily on my mind even now and I still think of him often.

But. Try finding some treats you can give from afar and then (very slowly) using that with your hand to show the bird your hand it okay. Also. Research! There’s a lot of great info on how to tame a bird out there. It might take some time but it’s worth it😁

I must have been very lucky with my Ring Neck Parrot. I knew absolutely nothing about them.
He's 8 months old. We have had him for 5 months.
I didn't know that they could be afraid of toys and things. So, I just pass him whatever it is. He takes it and plays.
If it's a bell, he rings it. If it's a ball he throws is about. Give him 3 or 4 new things and he will run from one to another trying to play with them all at once.
He's not afraid of anything. Last week we bought him a much bigger cage. We took all of his toys and put them into it. In seconds he went in on his own and started to rearrange things the way he likes them.
I did notice that he has been careful with blue toys. It can be 10 to 20 seconds before he goes to a new blue toy, but then he treats them like all the others. If he doesn't like a toy he throws it out of his cage.
We never try to force him to do anything. He comes when we call him. He doesn't always stay for long.
I want to start to train him, but I don't know what else to get him to do. It's almost like he came already trained.
For the first 2 days he would bsvk away from us. Then he didn't bother. Now, he seems to want our attention. He likes having his feet stroked.
Is it that Ring Necked Parrots are easy going? He's more like a kitten than a bird.
He's just one of the family now. My 8 year old daughter plays with him with her Barbie Dolls. He pulls off the shoes and passes her the clothes.
He can't talk yet. I think that he sometimes gets frustrated when trying to show what he wants. I say a list. Apple, date, banana...get to what he wants and he let's you know.
I had no idea that these birds were so clever. Give him beads and he sorts them into different colours. My daughter is teaching him colours. She says red and he brings a red bead. So far it's only red and blue.
I would love it if you made some videos about Ring Necks. I'm sure that we could be doing so much more with Ricky.
He also seems to be hyperactive. When he's awake, he can't stay still. He runs around his cage so quickly. He bashes his toys as he runs past.
We want him to be as happy as possible.
I'm sure that we're doing so many things wrong. It's very difficult to know what to do. I worry that we might be making mistakes.
We didn't use clickers or sticks. Didn't know about them. We just say "good boy".
I really enjoyed your video. I'll look through the others. You seem to know what you're doing.
About your parrot dropping the toys off the table. I would just tell Ricky that it was naughty. He would stop.
If I tell him that something is naughty or not nice, he soon stops. He comes for a rub on his beak. Like he's saying sorry.
Your bird seems very loving and likes praise. He might just do as you ask yo please you.
I have a lot to learn. Thank you so much for your video.

my quaker is both clingy and independent at the same time. she wants to be around people even when she should be sleeping but as soon as she stops screaming for human to come back (about 4 minutes) then she’ll go about destroying her toys and stuffing things through her cage bars. She’s a fan of leaving all the shredded bits on my carpet for me to clean up later. Yay😂

I had My cocketiel for like 2 years and He wouldnt touch any of His toys.I then got a Senegal parrot Who just destroys everything.Next thing My cocketiel is picking at a preening type toy.Brilliant.I then started buying different toys that have preening type mixed with others.I then cleaned the cage out one day to find wood all over the bottom.Hed moved from the preening bit and started to chew the wooden blocks. Its great every time I look over Hes on a different perch playing with a different toy rather than when He used to just sit on 1 perch all day

    Thank you, BirdTricks!!
I have a very picky, white faced cockatiel. Getting him to play with any toy was near impossible. I followed every step, placed food in the toys, praised him when I saw him playing with them, and hung them near his favorite hang out spots. Now my only problem is keeping a steady supply of toys on hand (as he goes through them so fast!)

I appreciate you so much. So I have a budgie and at first he didn’t care about his toys. Or he became hormonal with them, with lots of things. I took the offenders away. And eventually I brought them back but in front of him I would fill them with Millet and then added Millet to some finger traps - I started with toys he wasn’t hormonal with just to teach him it’s a toy. Then when I brought the others with treats he’s now breaking his toys., as much as he can. He’s re-homed and came attacking from protecting a cap or whatever he was hormonal about. He would bite lips and inside your nose... that was October. He no longer bites. Ever. He’s just learned to turn around and I just taught him target training. I’m not the best but he’s very smart. I hope I don’t mess him up because he’s great. He very happy with me and very happy playing alone. He’s sweet and talks a lot and comes to me. I feed him chop and all the good things and have him in a flight cage. I’ve learned soooo much and I am really enjoying our relationship. I think we make a great match, I love you but I also need my space but also I want a relationship. He used to be on an all seed diet. But he was very socialized. I learned first what what happening and then what to do about it from you and sometimes other you tubers. But I like your style and I think I’m more like you except I don’t know what I’m doing. Lol. And I don’t use a clicker because I don’t have one. I want to get your cook book. Also he regurgitates when I talk to him. He does not throw up. I try to back him up. Hoping he will stop doing that. Do I worry?

Wow this is very interesting. This is the first video I've ever seen about bird behavior. I lived in a household with birds. the yellow faced ones with red circle cheeks and light grey feathers on the body. that was 20 years ago.
Do you think that they parrots not being entertained by the toys is a sign of higher intelligence? Or maybe you already saw other signs. The smart ones might play more or something, IDK.
Cool vid! Have you thought about giving the birds television? like ... ok. I've always got music going on in the background. And I watch TV. And most of the time I'm also playing a videogame. If I lose any one of these three it gets boring. I bet these birds are so bored without entertainment. They are smart, I wonder if puzzle toys will help? Who knows.

My Rescue Grey seemed either uninterested in toys or afraid of them when I first got him a year ago. He only had one untouched toy in his cage when I bought him from a friend. He started chewing on his rope perch and would shred it. I would tell him he was a busy, busy bird and praise him for it. (I was watching to make sure he didn't ingest.) He enjoyed that praise, and I used it for new toys. I would point to a toy and ask him, "Are you going to be a busy, busy bird?" This seemed to give him confidence. It also seemed to give him permission. Now he chews on most toys, though he does like preening toys and snubs wooden block toys. He also has taken to homemade foraging boxes with his favorite treats inside, though he tends to save them for when he is in the right mood if that makes sense, usually in the car or if I have been gone all day.

I'm not even a bird owner but just love your videos! At 14:30 he plays with the kabab and gets a treat in it without throwing it. I understand that the treat was reinforcement, but is there a reason you didn't also click since he actually engaged in a more desirable playing behavior (no throwing)?

Luckily, my blue fronted amazon is a wrecking ball with toys, but sometimes she ignores new types of toys for her old favorites. Once she tries the new toys out, she loves them, but that takes a while! Maybe I can use some of these techniques to entice her a bit faster.
