You are an awesome bird owner. I don't have a bird nor will I but I do love them and appreciate your genuine care for your bird in captivity. Smokey is amazing. It is so refreshing to watch her as I do watch many bird video's and some I refuse to watch as the bird owners should really consider what they teach their birds.

I use cucumbers, squash and other fruits as foraging toys too. I also carve some small holes into them randomly with a knife, all different sizes, and then stick nuts or seeds (a variety) in the holes. I do it as a special treat.
    You have great advice!

Thank you! Always worth the wait to see what you and Smokey come up with! We've been putting around basil, dill (especially if in seed) cilantro, sunflowers (Beau goes crazy for these and they're not even in seed), chard, hot red peppers, parsley, calendula, nasturtium, cosmos (he likes the color). Just whatever is doing well in our garden. Again, thank you, we learn so much from you.

I always love your videos. I lost my marroon bellied conure 75 days ago. She was over 20 years old. And since you take care of smokey so well, it made me feel like I didn't take care of my baby girl so well. So I feel guilty I might have done something wrong, and she could have lived longer if I just did this, or that, that you suggested. So I don't want to get another bird for fear I might not give the next bird as good a life like you give smokey. So I live vicariously watching your smokey videos when you post them. Though I am lonely but don't want to make the same mistakes with another bird. Thank you for sharing smokey with us!

I have been having a most difficult time with my grey who began mutilating 6 years ago. I've had her 19 years she was fine before that. It is heartbreaking to see her like she is, and have to use collars, and to keep trying everything and only failing. What I wouldn't give to see her as content as your Smokey.

Wow! You're a science teacher! Bet your students LOVE your class! 😃 People that keep their poultry penned have developed a method of suspending a lettuce or a cabbage from the top of the pen, so their birds have something to fool with. Mine get to go out and forage in the yard, and my younger dog drives predators away. They till over the leaf-litter and clean up insects and weed-seeds and chatter to each other. they browse the pasture-grass, too. But rather than the possibly dangerous metal ring to stuff the artichoke in, why not use some of that plastic chain, put a clip on the end, and use that to fasten the stem of the choke to hang it upside down? Loop the chain around the stem and clip it onto itself tight enough to hold the stem. If she likes pumpkins in season, try any winter-type squash in the produce dept. of the market! Love your aviary... makes me want to move in! 😄 And yes, watching my birds, or the sheep, foraging - is therapeutic. I can relax sitting in a chair with a drink and watch them browse for hours!

  • @sezwo5774

Artichoke, yes! Occasionally I've been giving my TAG a roll of blue mechanics towels, really thick texture and he loves them, but now seeing Smokey enjoy an artichoke I am going to try large vegetables; artichokes, whole bell peppers, green cause they're the cheapest. Thanks for the suggestion.

Wonderful video! Nice to see Smokey so cuddly too. Great idea to mimic the parrot’s natural foraging behavior. My conure’s beak is not so strong as to tackle an artichoke, but I’ll try a broccoli or cauliflower crown. Also do you cut the sharp spines off the tips of the artichoke leaves? I worry Smokey might hurt herself on the thorn.

Great idea! I am not a big veggie eater (more of a fruitarian), so I never buy artichokes,. asparagus, etc. But I think my cockatoo would go for something like this. My conures would probably scared of them (they are scared of everything!), but who knows?
So, here's a weird question. The only bird I have who actually likes to chew on wood is my budgie. My cocktiel, cockatoo, and conures have never engaged in chewing on wood when given wooden objects/toys/perches. I've had 3 of my birds for 20+ years. Why do you think they don't engage in chewing on wood? They do like chewing up paper and cardboard. My parrot loves chewing up foam blocks (I give these only on a limited basis, and she never ingests them...but she REALLY likes chewy, rubbery type things!). Anyway, I'm constantly trying to find better things to interest them to play with.

I also have an African Grey (Rex), you said that you leave Smokey in the aviary all day while your gone. I have a few questions that hopefully you can answer. What about predator's like cats, snakes, other birds, etc. that might be in the area a person lives? What about weather, I live in Phoenix AZ, It can get very hot, what temperature's can African Greys handle? Not sure I want to leave Rex out all day but I would like to have her outside more often. My bird is 13 yrs old and she has recently started to scream, I think she's getting board with the activities I provide her, looking for ideas to keep her busy during the day when no-one is home. Any thoughts on a Grey who is scared of everything? We adopted ours from a man who was moving into senior care and couldn’t take her. She’s 15 years old and is scared of any new foods or toys in her cage or play areas. We have been taking it really slow to even move her off a really bad diet to pellets. It took months but we are finally there. Yet she has never touched a single toy and I’ve bought a ton. And if I try fruits or veggies she will either throw them or avoid going inside her cage if I put them in there. If I give her walnuts instead of almonds in their shells she acts as if she might die. (Drama queen) I just want a happy healthy well adjusted bird. We adore her.
    Any ideas besides patients?

Should the veggies be organic? Are the seeds inside the peppers safe?

Fresh tree branches with bark, too. My small ones love to peel bark from hedge, privet hedge.
