Squirmy wormy fly tying tutorial

  • Several years ago the competitive fly fishing world was taken by storm with the introduction of the squirmy wormy. It took me awhile to accept and fish the fly but I quickly realized it was the most deadly worm pattern I had ever fished after finally being willing to try it. I generally fish it as the point fly on a two or three fly Euro-nymphing orCzech nymphing rig but it would work just as well with a strike indicator rig. It has caught trout, steelhead, and grayling around the world for me.

    It’s insane how effective this fly is. Saved a few trips for me due to ultra finicky fish.

    I tied a few of these up over the weekend and have tried them out on a local pond for rainbows. Fished them under an indicator and the fish went nuts for them! I'm looking forward to nymphing with them on the river. Thanks for the video!

      Used em at Pecos River, New Mexico last wk. & even with a very low water cfi level we 'Ta-Dowed' it. Good idea to tie alot due to the fact that they don't last very long.

    Even though it may be a bit controversial to purist fly anglers, this thing looks deadly! Thanks for sharing Devin!

    Awesome looking fly. Looks like the wacky rig we use for bass fishing. Will be trying this very soon. Thanks sharing

      I'm sure it would. They definitely love curly tailed jigs so a squirmy should be a perfect fly equivalent.

    Great fly! I was trying to figure out a pattern with a bead incorporated in. Now I don't have to.

    The problem that I have to tie this fly, is because I finally cut the worm (rubber) with my thread, maybe is so hard, but if I don't make pressure, the fly undoes. Maybe I use so slim thread?

    I am having trouble finding all the materials mentioned in the squirmy wormy video. Is there a one-stop shop for these? Great videos. Thanks

    Do you think it would make a difference if you tapered the ends of the worm so it looks a bit more natural? Great video by the way!

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  7 років тому

      Thanks Steven. I haven't found it to make any difference myself whether the ends are tapered or not. The movement seems to be the most important part.

    Why do you use a slotted bead? Would a regular CS bead work? Nice fly, thanks Devin

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому

      A countersunk bead would work. Slotted beads tend to be heavier for the same size so they are typically what I use.

    Is that piece of tippet on the worm material there by chance or a reason for it, maybe to slide back?

      Which piece of tippet are you referring to Dirk? There isn't any tippet used in tying the fly.

    Would these work on the river fishing for brown trout or only use them on a lake for rainbow

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  3 роки тому

      I originally used it as a river fly for wild browns and rainbows. I didn’t even try it on a lake for a few years. So yes, it works well in rivers for brown trout.

    Devin, i've never tried this fly but heard about it and will make up a few. do you always fish it nymph style or have you tried casting and stripping it? Any success? Thank you!

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  6 років тому

      kereszturi I’ve retrieved it slowly in lakes but I’ve only drifted it with the occasional jogging motion in streams.

    Is the squirmy wormy legal in national park: RMNP. Soft plastic rule. Any info appreciated.

  • @memaloose3190
    @memaloose3190 7 років тому

    Do you add more weight when you use it for steelhead, since the heavier tippet decreases the sink rate? Also, do you make the worm longer? I tend to only make mine 3" overall, because I've had problems with fish grabbing and breaking off one of the ends and missing the hook when I've tried longer worms.

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  7 років тому

      Hi Kevin,
      I don't add more weight than just a bigger bead with steelhead. I keep the worm about the same size mainly because it tends to foul around the hook if it's longer. As you mentioned trout will bite the ends off as well but steelhead usually take it confidently.

    Is this still the easiest way to tie a squirmy?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  Місяць тому +1

      It still works but normally I just slide the worm onto the hook with some super glue these days.

    Hey guys purchased your excellent video on euro nymphing...i tried the technique out this past weekend and i came up with an important question...i fished the rigs mentioned but have an issue with watching the indicator mono...on the drifts i only submerged the tippet up to the tippet ring (sighter above water)..i lost track multiple times...surely an inch or two of the sighter material should be below the water surface so changes in sighter colours or movements can be detected...its almost impossible to detect any takes when the sighter is 100% out the water?Please advise

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  7 років тому +1

      Ryan The Rock by having the sighter out of the water you minimize the affect of the surface currents dragging on the thicker sighter material and your drift will improve as long as the wind isn't blowing. Without seeing what you describe first hand I'm not sure why takes would be less visible when the sighter is out of the water. If you are losing sight of your sighter I suggest adding extra knots, using long knot tags, and adding a transition section of 12 lb amnesia above the sighter to help you see it more readily regardless of the background.

    • @ryantherock7664
      @ryantherock7664 7 років тому

      Thanks for responding.I do realise the disadvantage of the drag issue with the much thicker diameter sighter mono going into the water.With the dual colour sighter mono i though the point was to watch the entry point into the water where the sighter mono enters the water.Since i havnt had a take yet i guess its difficult to describe.So is the sighter mono watched above the water?Does it move downwards sharply,hesitate?Ive done regular indicator fishing all my life so its difficult to understand.

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  7 років тому +2

      Ryan The Rock the main point of the dual color softer is just to give you multiple colors to watch in different light conditions. I fish my sighter out of the water when fishing up and across unless the wind is blowing. I look for any movement or hesitation to set the hook.

    Have you ever tied it on a jig hook

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  6 років тому

      Yes. If I tie a single tailed version it works well on a jig hook. The forward tail cocks back strangely if tied with two tails though.

    Isn't flyfishing 'sposed to b fun? I have a blast..squirmy's or a hares ears. It's depending on the fish's choice..not mine. If it's not edible, & is tied with thread on a hook.., sounds like a fly to me. Have fun and don't let the never smiling, ho-hum purists change that! #FunTimesWithAFlyrod
