Prime example why early socialisation of such giant breeds is crucial. Yes, they're super cute and I'm sure he's a sweet dog at home, but poor fellow, he was so stressed.
I've noticed that many of the "gentle giants" breeds start suffering the same problem as tiny breeds. People hear that they're gentle and mild tempered and don't train/socialize them well - I'm not referring to these specific owners, I've seen a lot of bernies and newfies that didn't live up to their reputations. Also, lots of people get them expecting them to be lazy teddy bears when especially young males can be pretty rowdy if you can't train them.
Yeah, I have noticed the same thing. Far too many people don't realize that the "friendly" breeds are only like that because they usually socialize easily, not because they're naturally docile. *Some* rare dogs might be, but that's a roll of the dice.
This is why really doing your research on breeders and getting one from a reputable breeder who works hard to socialize their puppies before they're sent to their new homes is so important, in my opinion! Of course, owners need to do the bulk of the work to socialize their dogs. But, having known really quality breeders who spend time socializing their puppies during those first incredibly formative weeks of their lives, I've seen how it makes such a huge difference in their temperaments throughout the dogs' lives! It forms a really important foundation for the dog's temprament that the owner can then build on when they further socialize their dog!
I wish people had to pass a test before getting any animal (I'm also NOT referring to the owners of Kody! He's just a puppy and he's very sweet. They're doing a great job). Basic animal care and a common sense test. It's the latter which is missing the majority of the time there's any trouble with any pet.
This is why I will always champion going to puppy obedience with a new dog regardless of how many dogs you've had in the past but ESPECIALLY if you're a new dog owner. It's a bit sad to see massive dogs that aren't under control. There's a nice lady near me who has a BEAUTIFUL big puppy American Bulldog. He's MASSIVE. And she is wispy thin. Whenever he starts pulling on that lead, no amount of force that she can conjure up in her body will be enough to hold that dog back and no matter how gentle and nice he is, he could cause a panic and get himself into trouble. He's also VERY rowdy and plays rough with his male dog friends, I'm hoping he won't become same-sex aggressive once he's fully matured. Behavioural therapy and training is possible in an adult/older dog but it'll take much longer than when they were puppies and honestly you're setting yourself and your dog up for failure by not training them from the start.
And given that he's a mix, he's likely from a backyard breeder making fancy designer mutts to make a quick $$$. Which means no temperament testing, no socialisation of puppies before they go home, etc.

The Saint Bernard once was a medium weight dog that was nimble enough to walk through fresh pulver snow from avalanches without sinking in too much to find people under the snow. It sad how, especially in the United States, the Saint Bernard was bred into a big, heavy, drooling mascot of his former self. Before that, the Saint Bernard had a body more like a bigger Bloodhound.
You look amazing in that green outfit! I know that’s not the point of the video but as a fashionista I love beautiful looks ! And Kody’s fur beautifully offsets the color too.
When I was a kid we had a saint bernard. It was the most insane dog I've ever had. Whenever we would let him in from being outside we'd get up as high as we could on furniture because he'd rush in and go crazy.
Big dogs really need to be trained that rough/excited play happens outside. My mom’s German shepherd is a nut case and she’s knocked over just about everyone in their house (I’ve come close to doing a full ass-over-elbows thanks to that dog and her antics) but they still haven’t seen the need to train her 🤦🏻♀️
Think of it as progress. Next time he comes in, he'll have an idea of what to expect and he'll (hopefully) be a little more comfortable and a little less scared.
We just acquired a saint. Inherited sort of. I love this dog so much. I wish I had grown up with one and had one all my life. I didn't know how amazing they are. Mine is not slobbery, and if brushed a couple times a week the hair is manageable. Just don't be lazy. Mine is almost 2 and she can be skittish and we are working on it but some things she just says no. They are stubborn sometimes. Patience and repetition and love. Mine freaks out with a dryer, so it's work to get all the shed out but worth it. Absolutely and totally worth the grooming work. I've never been hugged by an animal in such a way that can take all the bad away in that moment of a hug. Keeps me going in really hard times. My husband deploys in a couple weeks and I am feeling so blessed to have this dog with me.

I came for the chaos 😂
What a scaredy-dog! You can tell he's smart, though, with the way he kept trying to manipulate the situation.
Ridiculous his owners waiting 15 mths to bathe him! Should have been done since he was little so he took it as routine!
8:16 His inner Cujo popped out right there.
😂😂😂😂
And they say a groomers job isn't stressful!! No wonder why some groomers want to throw their hands up in the Air and have a strong drink afterwards!!
Great job with that nervous young giant. Your patients is amazing
Was Kody recently adopted? I hope? I can’t imagine having a large breed for the first year of his life and not socializing him and bathing him. 😮
I was quite nervous for you there! 😳 He was indeed quite scared!
All your videos are like an end of the day dose of dopamine for me but thats not all. The comments from viewers are also so wholesome, kind, at times informative and fun. ❤
and that is why early grooming is important
The Saint Bernard once was a medium weight dog that was nimble enough to walk through fresh pulver snow from avalanches without sinking in too much to find people under the snow. It sad how, especially in the United States, the Saint Bernard was bred into a big, heavy, drooling mascot of his former self. Before that, the Saint Bernard had a body more like a bigger Bloodhound.
Aw such a big beautiful dog ❤🤗
Such a big boy is going to be a challenge, especially his 1st groom ever
You look amazing in that green outfit! I know that’s not the point of the video but as a fashionista I love beautiful looks ! And Kody’s fur beautifully offsets the color too.
LOL How many ways can a dog say NO
But I am used to training and giving baths to Lab's
They tend to think water = Play time
I love hearing the cameraman help in whatever way he can. He’s so supportive!
Thanks, Vanessa.
Kody is adorable. He is 1 powerful puppy. I want to cuddle him he's so cute.
