I've noticed that many of the "gentle giants" breeds start suffering the same problem as tiny breeds. People hear that they're gentle and mild tempered and don't train/socialize them well - I'm not referring to these specific owners, I've seen a lot of bernies and newfies that didn't live up to their reputations. Also, lots of people get them expecting them to be lazy teddy bears when especially young males can be pretty rowdy if you can't train them.
Yeah, I have noticed the same thing. Far too many people don't realize that the "friendly" breeds are only like that because they usually socialize easily, not because they're naturally docile. *Some* rare dogs might be, but that's a roll of the dice.
This is why really doing your research on breeders and getting one from a reputable breeder who works hard to socialize their puppies before they're sent to their new homes is so important, in my opinion! Of course, owners need to do the bulk of the work to socialize their dogs. But, having known really quality breeders who spend time socializing their puppies during those first incredibly formative weeks of their lives, I've seen how it makes such a huge difference in their temperaments throughout the dogs' lives! It forms a really important foundation for the dog's temprament that the owner can then build on when they further socialize their dog!
I wish people had to pass a test before getting any animal (I'm also NOT referring to the owners of Kody! He's just a puppy and he's very sweet. They're doing a great job). Basic animal care and a common sense test. It's the latter which is missing the majority of the time there's any trouble with any pet.
This is why I will always champion going to puppy obedience with a new dog regardless of how many dogs you've had in the past but ESPECIALLY if you're a new dog owner. It's a bit sad to see massive dogs that aren't under control. There's a nice lady near me who has a BEAUTIFUL big puppy American Bulldog. He's MASSIVE. And she is wispy thin. Whenever he starts pulling on that lead, no amount of force that she can conjure up in her body will be enough to hold that dog back and no matter how gentle and nice he is, he could cause a panic and get himself into trouble. He's also VERY rowdy and plays rough with his male dog friends, I'm hoping he won't become same-sex aggressive once he's fully matured. Behavioural therapy and training is possible in an adult/older dog but it'll take much longer than when they were puppies and honestly you're setting yourself and your dog up for failure by not training them from the start.
@@tenesto 15 months is close enough to 2 years old when it comes to zero socialization. He apparently was never even bathed before this. Hopefully this was a wake up call for his humans. A full grown bernard mix with high nerves and no confidence could be an accident waiting to happen

You don’t know Kody’s backstory, since he’s mixed with a Bernese Mountain Dog he could been a rescue whose previous owners couldn’t be bothered to groom him nor help condition him to the grooming process.
@@rogue7723considering Saint Bernese is a Designer Dog…and he looks very well cared for more than likely he was purchased by the owners. @rogue7723 I never said I thought his current owners were to blame. You're right. I don't know his backstory, so I didn't blame them. And, Kody is a good example of how much harder it is to give a large, two-year old dog his first bath, than it is to give a small puppy their first bath.
They were bred for work in snow, and they never had to worry about slobber, given that they were outside a lot. It's only a problem now that they've got cushy 😅
I hope his parents take him in every month to be come used to bathing. Doesn't have to have a bath all the time. But walk arounds. Get him to feel comfortable & enjoy going. I'm lucky my 2 big kiddos love to go to the groomers & vets. It's like a holiday to them. Lots of love to all! ❤

Aww, what a handsome boy! Yeah, it's difficult to get the big ones to do something they don't want to do. Especially when they're just teenagers like this big boy. My 127lb Pyr/Anatolian took one look at Santa the other day and noped right out of there. No cute Santa pictures this year. :(

Shows the importance of early socialization, especially with large breeds like the Saint Bernard. He can't be scared of something that he is used to. But since this was his first groom, he was too scared of the noises.
Can't imagine how he would have reacted in a normally loud salon with dogs barking and multiple dryers going off. I think Vanessa might have a new client whether she wants one or not!😂
Well done Vanessa, he really was a challenge. It just goes to show that grooming from a puppy is so beneficial to all dogs but especially big dogs with long hair. He looks great despite his grinch feet 😅 and I'm sure he feels better for it too ❤xx

You are incredibly patient with all breeds. Thank you for being so kind to both cats and dogs. It is so true that pets need to be acquainted with the grooming process early on so that it is normal to them instead of something that is unusual or even scary.❤
When I was a kid we had a saint bernard. It was the most insane dog I've ever had. Whenever we would let him in from being outside we'd get up as high as we could on furniture because he'd rush in and go crazy.
The Saint Bernard once was a medium weight dog that was nimble enough to walk through fresh pulver snow from avalanches without sinking in too much to find people under the snow. It sad how, especially in the United States, the Saint Bernard was bred into a big, heavy, drooling mascot of his former self. Before that, the Saint Bernard had a body more like a bigger Bloodhound.
