When you acquire a non-shedding dog that you'd like to keep long for the first time, proper brushing is a learning curve. The dogs coat was in fairly decent condition. He was recently neutered, meaning he was likely wearing a cone for a period of time, causing matting. The coat is also likely going through a change, due to the change in hormone levels. Let's cut the owner some slack - as she is more than willing to put in the work to keep his coat matt free. She's purchased all the right tools, and was happy to listen to all my tips and tricks to prevent matting going forward 🙂
Yes!! It unfortunately does not take long for a doodle to get matted 😭 I'm not a dog groomer, but I do own a cockapoo, and I have to be on top of brushing him (ESPECIALLY if he gets wet). He also has, like, 3 different textures of fur 😂
Vanessa is so sweet to protect the owners. Some ppl get quite vicious when it's not appropriate. All that will do is drive off the caring owners, who fear they'll get lumped in with the others.
Even though he has a lot of mats you can tell the owner does take care of him and grooms him often with how chill he is with the blower and brush. They just need more practice with dematting him but his behaviour really reflects the owners care for him.
Yeah and doodle coats are WEIRD AF. Don't blame her at all for taking awhile to get a handle on his, especially if she's only fairly recently adopted him.
If she "groomed him often" he wouldn't have had these HUGE pelted mats! Newfoundlands are VERY chill by nature so grooming them is usually easy for them to deal with even if a dog has never been groomed. I adopted my first Newfie when he was already 13 months and he was perfect while grooming right from the start.
I comb my standard poodle every day for half an hour, this is a must, otherwise he is matted in a matter of a week. He is extremely curly, so the groomer says, so I just have to put in the work and my dog must put in the patience. (I cannot count the times ppl said "Oh, a poodle, cool! I have been thinking about getting one myself, because he does not shed, does he?" No, he does not. On the other hand he is a dirt magnet, in wet weather every outing ends in the bathtub, I have to shower his feet. No shampoo, just warm shower at the feet and often at the tummy to get the dirt out. Plus half an hour combing every day. Plus it costs more than 100 Euros every six weeks to have him cut by a groomer. SO, there are about one thousand valid reasons why to get a poodle, but his coat is definitely not among them. The coat is a pain in the *ss.)
Stanley was very well mannered for his grooming. the owner has treated him well and conditioned him for grooming. He is a very big and fluffy dog with a beautiful coat.
If you've never owned a dog that grows "hair" rather than "fur," it can be a learning process. Especially if it's a doodle that potentially has a weird hybrid coat. I hope you help the owner learn the right way to brush and comb thru this lovely boy's coat. They obviously care very much and have been trying to do a good job maintaining him!
Exactly right about the random textures that occur with doodle-mixes. I have a rescued Aussiedoodle. Australian Shepherd wavy & wiry hair along with a softer curliness becomes a crazy floofy tangle if not regularly brushed & groomed. She looked more like a small Old English Sheepdog, when brought into rescue (after 3-4 months of no grooming & puppies, raised, adopted). The groomer I found was thrilled that I wanted her shaved down, because the matting was horrendous, would have been a lot like this.
I adopted a pomapoo in 2019. Her coat is a menace (pom 2x fur and poodle hair mixed in) and I just keep it short. I had a Pom for years before that and she was easy compared to the pomapoo. Hair just grows and grows and grows and grows... More recently I adopted a havanese, but was only comfortable with it after having a dog with hair and knew what to expect...havanese hair is so curly and mats easy if you don't take care of it as well. Apparently she had to be shaved before I took her home because of her mats.
We were apparently lucky with our first cockapoo, who had wavy hair that was consistent. My current cockapoo definitely has a weird hybrid coat 🤣 He doesn't shed, but he does have at least 3 different textures in his fur
Our beloved Woody/a Havanese was so handsome. I spent long time brushing him everyday. I also groomed him myself. It was a 3.5 hour groom each time. But, he was so patient with me. Missed him so much!!
That was SUCH a good dog, he's just a baby still and so well behaved! I'm glad his owner cares about his coat, I'm sure she'll get to grips with that challenge over time.
I love that you show owner reactions sometimes and that you respect that not everyone wants to be on camera - this is a happy medium. I don’t need to see their faces, just to see how happy the pet is and the hear the joy of the owner. Thank you to the owners willing to participate!
One time Stanley was having coffee, and then he accidentally drank Jim's orange juice and didn't notice. Goes to show you how much Stanley doesn't care. ....... Oh wait wrong video
THANK YOU from the bottom of my Doodle owning heart for highlighting the owner's care and dedication to maintaining this dog's coat. Well done owner!! I bought an Australian Labradoodle before understanding the grievances people have with poodle cross breeds. While I lacked knowledge on that front, I did go through a process of finding a breeder who gave temperament tests and health tests. Their breeding dogs live in family homes, and they require an application process and information session on how to care for the dog before a sale took place. I bought the tools to groom my girl at home and actually use them. There was a learning curve, and a couple of short cuts until we got it right. I have a dog who has a great temperament, and we love her to bits. While I will probably not purchase a Labradoodle in the future, I will definitely rescue ones that are being mistreated. These dogs can be great family pets for someone who is willing to spend the time and energy.
This groom made me really respect what you are willing to do just to help dogs in need, Vanessa! To spend 3.5 hours on a complimentary groom, instead of completing probably about 3 normal sessions in the same time... You're an absolute lifesaver for dogs like this - matted, agressive, disabled and neglected. Thank you! 🙏
Well she is in the lucky (and with lucky i mean well earned) position, that most of her income comes from her shop and channel, so not only she can take a day for a single customer, if that is what is needed, she can also offer grooming for free 🙂
@@Daniel-rd6styup so she gets job satisfaction and the videos of these free grooms make her an decent additional income - some of which I believe she earmarks for charity so it’s a total win win 😊
The tidbit on the change in hormone levels causing his fur to change is fascinating and makes sense. The longer I've watched your channel, the more I learn that groomers are just as essential as any vet. ❤ Stanley was a good boy!
I like how you manage people's expectations for other groomers, explaining things like having more time and so forth, so people can hopefully have reasonable expectations. I'm not a dog groomer nor do I have a dog to take to a groomer, it just seems like you're professionally courteous to others in your field.
Two days ago I groomed an extremely matted St Bernard at the owner’s house because I couldn’t fit her in my shower. I spent nearly two hours shaving the dog and 1.5 hours bathing. The senior girl was so happy to finally be mat free after nearly a year of not seeing a groomer. Sadly I was not able to save all of her coat but the owner didn’t care, she just wanted the mats gone. It’s so rewarding being able to help people with their dogs and then see their reactions. Priceless!
Absolutely! The whole doodle fad drives me nuts, but most of the doodles I know would be great dogs if they had parents who knew what they were getting into/were willing to actually follow through with all the work they are. Stanley's owner has obviously done a great job with him!
One thing is of course very clear after watching this video. Girl With The Dogs has golden hands, and is a true magician with dogs and cats. Big or small she plays them all.
I honestly think that big dogs are better trained than the little ones because we understand they can do so much more damage/or injuries. I purposely made sure my dog learned not to jump on people as a puppy because he could have been over 100lbs (thankfully he is only 93 lbs). I made sure to be very firm with him and not allow it. He still doesn’t have a good recall, but most people with his breed don’t have a recall … because they don’t listen while outside.
It’s vital to train all dogs!! It keeps their anxiety levels down and makes them good neighbors. It’s an improvement part of being a good pet steward. If you don’t want to put in the time or spend the money then you’re not going to be a responsible pet owner.
He is such a beautiful dog! It has taken me years to figure out how to deal with my own hair type, I can't imagine having to also learn how to deal with different dog hair types!
For an 18 mo old, he is quite calm & colected, and is a beautiful pup!💓💓💓 But I could never... Kudos to Vanessa for a great job, and his owner for her efforts!🐾
What a sweet boy. Kudos to his owner for raising him so well. His mix makes for a tricky coat but she has a good video and all to help her maintain his coat. He is a lucky pup.
I just adore this dog. I adore the size of this dog and the temperament. You’re doing such a great job with him! The owner will be so pleased when her dog comes home.
He is the absolute best boy EVER! What a big sweet baby, and you were absolutely wonderful with him. His happy playing at the end was everything. Thanks for saving this sweetheart's coat and providing education for his loving mom!

That's what I was thinking.
He looks like Cousin It.
Figuratively and literally. A big, sweet, precious baby so happy to see mommy at the end.
LOVE when Vanessa asks Stanley to close his mouth, and he does immediately. ❤️
Newfoundland x Poodle? Ohhhhhh boy that’s a coat mix I would never want.
Lol right? I remember the drama of French Poodle Shaving Day, think of the sheer size of a Newfie, and my brain tries to run away.
He's a Noodle!
Nightmare combination!!!
Why do people do this? Sigh 😮
