Fun fact: When the emperor announced the end to his people, it was on radio, the first time most Japanese heard his voice. And since he used Palace Japanese nearly nobody understood him.
How do you know that
@@Stellar_lnsights plenty of documentaries about the fall of Japan, it’s why many didn’t believe the news of the surrender and fought on. Even a coup attempt to continue the war progressed.
Yeah, I'm learning Japanese and can pick out a few things from listening to people talk. Hirohito's surrender speech sounds like gibberish by comparison
Part of this is the intonation, which is more like a Buddhist sutra lol
But yes, I can understand most what is said in anime or games as long as the topic isn't too strange or mystical - but in that speech it's just a few words here and there. Even if you account that surrender of a contry is a faily unusual topic, that is way worse than it should be.
Japanese here. There is no such thing as Palace Japanese, only Literal Japanese.

Well, 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries in China were dominated by the Ming, and that looks more like Ming Imperial Attire, as the Qing typically used more gold and robes

Japanese empire was pretty impressive by the fact that they managed to defeat a major European power in war.( Russo-Japanese war) and managed to colonize parts of East and South East Asia to become a major colonial power in just 50 years. And its amazing how japan recovered economically after the end of the empire. Respect to the Japanese people
Beating Russia on the Eastern front across siberia isn't that impressive
And Germany held all of Europe and Russia at bay for years.
Their economy rebounded so quick because the U.S. helped them rebuild
Honestly I hate imperial japan since our country suffered under them, but still pretty impressive
Good thing the Soviets fought (border conflict) and showed the Japanese not to mess with them (go to war with the Soviets). Japan realize how much better prepared the Soviets were, and decided not to attack the Soviets. Things could have ended differently in Europe if it wasn’t for the Soviets beating Japanese in the border conflicts. But towards the end of the war by the request of USA the Soviets beat the Japanese army in Manchuria which helped the Japanese realize they needed to surrender to the Americans.

Indeed. Makes one doubt the rest of the narrative . . .
That the bombings caused Japan to surrender can be seen as one of the biggest perpetuated myths of the war. It has been argued that the devastation of the fire bombings, due to most houses being made of wood, plus the end of the European theatre causing the USSR to turn their attention to Japan was the catalyst and the dropping of the nukes just so happen to come before Japan conceded.

The dropping of the atomic bombs did not happen in March, it happened in August '45
Glad you mentioned that the USSR attacked rapidly through Manchuria, and it was not just a matter of the two bombs, as big as they were.
It can be argued easily that Truman dropped the atomic bombs just to speed up the already inevitable Japanese surrender -- in order to forestall the onrushing invasion by USSR, and prevent an all-Soviet occupation of Japan after the war.
Dropped the A-bombs on Japan --in order to stop Russia

Hubris brought about by their defeat of Russia in 1905. They thought they were invincible and behaved in a brutal way when they conquered SE Asia. Japan did not have the right mindset to rule overseas colonies and thought the natives could be ruled by sheer brute force and draconian measures.
They had a strong navy but their army was below standard in weaponry, namely tanks and artillery. Their shortage of natural resources forced them to skimp on armor. Their hubris finally caught up with them and exposed them as poor colonizers.

It is important to note that the attack on Pearl Harbor was not as successful as Japan hoped. It changed naval doctrine to a focus on aircraft carriers which previously focused on battleships.
No the submarine pens nor the fuel stations.
Pearl Harbour was not meant to destroy the USA, but rather to buy time for the Japanese as they wanted to obtain the oil reserves in the east indies( indonesia). They just needed to slow the US response down, as American had stopped providing oil to Japan, hence Japan was critically low on oil.

The reason Hirohito leaned towards military was because people were beginning to see the "divinity" claim as silly. An assassination attempt and resulting court proceedings made this more evident. "They began to worship as a deity" is really only after they were indirectly forced. He saw an alliance with the military (as branches were more separate in those days) as the only realistic way to keep power. It's a common misconception that the samurai rebellion fought only with medieval weapons. But in actual fact, they did have firearms too.
Basically, it was the U.S. that convinced Japan to modernize.
Nah, it was European colonization of Asia that forced Japan to modernize to defend themselves from European aggression
Japan didn't want to fight with western power because they knew their limits. The reason Japan attacked Pearl Harbor was because the US stopped their oil export to Japan. Japan either had to roll back from China or double down. They double down. They raised the stake by trying to wrest Netherland East Indie (today's Indonesia). The US and British were just happened to be in the way.
This is what most people miss, as I also posted
Japan should have continued fighting in China, but not attack the US. They could have had Southeast Asia all to themselves. (And if they needed oil, Saudi Arabia could have supplied it from 1938 onward.)
.
@@electrictroy2010 Japan couldn't keep fighting in China. For one, they would run out of oil within months because of USA oil embargo. No oil, no war machine. Worse yet, no oil meant no ammo supplies from Japan factories. Japan soldiers would had to fight with bayonet and shuriken.
The only oil source within striking distance was oil wells in Netherlands East Indie. But to grab it, they would have to go through British, which their colonies in Malaya constitute a belt between Japan and Netherlands East Indie. And to break through British, Japan had to consider the risk that USA would intervene physically (instead of just diplomatically with their oil embargo over Japan invasion of China). That's why their invasion was conducted simultaneously with the attack of Pearl Harbor.
The Pearl Harbor attack wasn't meant to defeat USA. Japan military strategist were aware that, unlike Russia in 1905, they couldn't defeat USA with just one attack. It was only meant to stun USA, prevented them from intervened with Japan conquest in South East Asia, which also had to be done swiftly because Japan oil reserve only last for months away before dried up. Japan hoped that they could negotiated peace with USA afterwards.
And no, they couldn't rely on Saudi Arabia to supply them with oil, which was (and still today) under USA sphere of influence. Saudi Arabia was under USA influence even more during that time where they were still a new state and they didn't yet to know how to mine the oil themselves.
