I just added one of these to my collection to handle the flies and through July the pitchers have just filled to the point where flies can basically jump out now off the dead ones below. I’m ready/needing the new fall growth! ♥️
Leucophylla are my fave. ❤️ I have all of the varieties shown here, and year after year the pitchers are full to turn brim with insects. Even when they’re full and another insect is halfway in the pitcher, it cannot back out and escape. All sarracenia are the definition of evolution & efficient hunters. I had lots of sarracenia, but recently killed about half of them over a cold dormancy and I was away from home for a cpl weeks. 💔

Sarracenia oreophila is probably my favorite, but an interesting note is that my alata and alata hybrids seem like they catch a noticeably larger amount of bugs than any of my other carnivores, which includes pretty much everything except pings
It's the first time I have grown one of these plants it's October and it's just flower it looks beautiful strawberry red petals and inside lime green. I opened one of the old trumpets it was full of insects. Looking forward to next spring for lots of new growth

On top of that, the one that I have grows so well for me and is always super full of pitchers. Sarracenia minor is a close second with its charming stubby alien like pitchers.
I love these. Something about the white tops looks so peaceful or calming. What are the distinct characteristics of this species in comparison to the others? Thank you
They are generally tall, slim and white with green or red venation. Some are electric pink but the size and shape are the same. And they have red petals on their flowers. The tall, white pitchers are really their greatest characteristic 😃
I planted one of these in a pot with a purpurea hybrid but it doesn't seem to be producing new pitchers. I replanted it into its own pot and while some of the roots seemed to be a bit stiff and brown, it did have some mushier white roots. Hopefully it will recover.

Beautiful :) Do you guys have any recommendations for indoor growing of tall sarracenias, assuming i have a good grow light? I live in an apartment so i cant put them outside, and i remember Damon once saying that grow lights can quickly and easily burn the tall Sarracenias so grow lights arent the best for them, which sucks because that eliminates like 90% of sarracenia out there lol. Is it possible to indoor grow them with some dedication or should i just wait until i get my own place?
It can be really tricky because they want so much light but it’s worth a try! You can get a good growlight like the yescom 225 available on Amazon. Grow the plants about 6” from the light on a 12 hour day length
No, it will generate its own fluids but when you first receive on in the mail or if you feed the pitchers an osmocote pellet, add a little water to jump start the production of fluids.
Do the tops go brown and die off to be replaced by new ones. Mine has turn a crispy shade of brown around the veined area. But I have lots of shoots at the bottom coming through.
There are a few things that can cause the pitchers to turn brown. They naturally die back every year and in January we cut them all off at the base of the plant (we have a couple of videos demonstrating this). At other points in the year they can lightly burn across the tops of the lids and that is totally normal, no need to cut anything off. Just wait until the pitcher dies back further to the base of the plant.
I recently bought a Sarracenia leucophylla, it looked pretty. The garden centre I bought it from had it listed as an indoor plant, I don't have a garden so will the plant be okay? We're having a heatwave at the moment so I sit the plant outside [have a small bit of grass just outside my living room window] in the cup holder of a folding/camping chair for a few hours then put it back in the water dish
They generally prefer to be grown outdoors if possible. They like full sun and to be sitting in water all the time. They are fairly heat tolerant as long as they are sitting in water. If you decide to move it outside, transition it slowly so that it can acclimate to the new light lebels

@@n.jboltz599 Sarracenia want full, full sun so if you grow them indoors make sure they gets tons of direct sunlight. You’ll also need to provide a chilly winter dormancy for them, check out my video all about winter dormancy for lots of tips on that!

Although I am new to carnivorous plants, my favorite plant is the Sarracenia x Green Monster. albino occurring hybrid, S. leucophylla x minor.

Not to worry, the older roots are normally brown 😊! It may just have needed a repot!
I had a lot of wasps near my trash cans(bins) I put my plant alongside my venus fly trap on the bin wow did they devoured the wasps. Brilliant
They’re really effective at catching wasps!

Purpurea species do need to be filled with water! The other species don’t need it the same way but they do like a bit of overhead watering as well.
I got a big sarracenia leucophylla hurricane creek white yesterday and it has 3 growth points
They make their best pitchers later in the year so you’re in for a treat this autumn!
