Why is there so much gossip on nursing units?

This is why I keep my work friendships at work. I don't ask for peoples' numbers/social media or give my own info out. If we meet in public, I will definitely say hi, but I'm not seeking you out. There's a lot more gossip and drama when you take your work friendship out of the workplace and share too much about your personal life and family. Being a float nurse kind of helps with this because I may not see the same people for weeks or months at a time. I am in a group chat with other float nurses but we mostly only talk about what different units are like to work in, shift swaps, etc., aka work-related topics.
