  • Do Raspberries Even Need Food? The short answer: sometimes! As a unique berry that is dormant for upwards of half the year, raspberries are only fed once per year, if that.
In today's Quickie, we'll look at when and why that is, as well as what should we be fertilizing with. Blink and you'll miss it, so maybe watch it twice! :-)
It feels just like yesterday I started this series. I've compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: • Garden Quickies

I think it is a good idea to link one or two raspberry videos on top of the screen as well to make in case anybody is interested or wants to refresh their mind about how to prune raspberries or care for them (as an example).

This was so beautifully said. Thank you so much. I’m a reconstructing Christian and discovering forgiveness and love in my garden this year. Thank you for your wise words and insight. My husband and I were youth pastors and worship leaders for 14 years. We are now taking time for our immediate family and finding out Gods love for us in our next stage of life. We are now Happy grandparents of 3 kids that can run free though Nana’s garden and graze off of what is grown and harvested in the beauty of the backyard kitchen garden.

Thank you Jeff. Started my first Raspberry this spring. I bought some chicks and a few ducks, so much fun but very time consuming. I'm really nervous, its been a while since I've had a flock. Take care and have a great spring harvest.

love your videos so much. I am lazy about pruning my everbearing and I simply cut the patch right down to the ground every winter and feed them in the spring. I don't get the early berries, but we have a bumper crop from mid July to the end of September (coastal BC), we get about a 2lb a day from our 15' row and the are the star of the garden. I planted marigolds and nasturtians around them this year, and I have a bag of saw dust innoculated with wine caps, apparently they live quiet well together.

I am guilty of having neglected my ever-bearing raspberries over the last few years! I didn't even bother to cut the canes back until this spring, a couple of weeks ago. NOW, I hope I can treat them like they deserve, and give the row a good feeding and mulch to cut down the competition. We are going to be *NEEDING* the nutrition and sweetness they provide!! Thank you so much for the reminder.

Wonderful to watch your videos. So informative. I have seen a pepper growing segment in the DIY Garden series. They use an entire pepper to grow a plant, my question is this, they rub the pepper on a cut grape and then they use a white paste from a tube on the pepper as well. Then it's planted. Would you know what the white paste could be? It looks like toothpaste but not sure. No one can figure it out and they never answer the question. Maybe you have an idea of what it is? Thank you for all your work helping the rest of us.

I have wild black strawberry plants on my property, they have been neglected by me because while working full-time i never paid attention to them
The most i have ever gotten from them was a few berries i shared with my dog.
This spring i cut down all the spent canes leaving the new canes and fertilized them. I see a lot more berries this year but they are tiny. I plan to repeat again next spring
So my question is if i do this for a few years will i get a decent harvest? Any suggestions from you to tackle this would be appreciated. Love all your videos

Hi Jeff. Love your quickies. I don't have raspberries. I'd like to. I do have strawberries, and here's the but.... their not doing anything. I have 4 different pots and not a peek. It's a week since I sowed. I guess I'm anxious. I hopping they just take longer to germinate. I started them like on a whim while snacking on some. I'll betcha my next move is to find your video on them. ( something this moment is telling me I saw one) I may have taken notes I'll have to check. Hopefully this is good timing for them. And I do know raspberries are on sale. Do you think it's a good idea to start with fresh seeds? Maybe buy a started plant is the key? I'd like to do blackberries also. Oh gee, I just got overwhelmed. I'm not fully recovered from my trip to the hospital. Oh, by the way, thank you for your kind words. As for you, keep them ( videos) coming.
Thanks Jeff love & God bless ❤

Do you mean you planted strawberry seeds Donna? If so, don't be shocked..it can take up to 2 months for them to germinate. They take forever. Its why they are almost never grown from seed. Take care! 🙂

@The Ripe Tomato Farms Hey Jeff. I kinda suspected that. I'll let these go and see what happens. But I will buy the plants along with black berries and raspberries. If you don't mind, one more question.... I have Bush Sugar Baby seeds. I have fabric containers, some measure 24"×24"×12" deep. Do I need more diameter and depth? I appreciate your help so much. Please don't go out of your way to answer. it's just well when you have the time. I don't like being a bother. Thanks honey.

I never knew this. What if I’ve been feeding my raspberries once a month? Have I caused irreparable damage? I’ve been using a “fruit tree and berry fertilizer”. Is that a bad thing?

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

Nah, it won't kill or even hurt the plants...it can just affect berry taste and production for THAT year Sandra. That's all. We stop feeding in June to discourage crazy sucker growth and growth that won't make it over winter dormancy. Wasted effort in other words.
