Yes, I would like to learn how to set up an irrigation system and learn how to care for all berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries).
Thank you Peter! I do try to get all the info in there. I know how much of a bummer it is to watch a 10 minute video and not get that ONE QUESTION answered. ;-)
My berries are in 12 and 15 gal. plastic pots. An inch of water per week works out to ~12 minutes using 4 GPH emitters. My crop is mixed berries. Am I better off watering 2 minutes every day, 4 minutes every other day, or 6 minutes twice a week?
Yes… more videos about raspberries!! This video has been such a big help, and I look forward to more (caring for them, irrigation, trellising, etc). You are very knowledgeable!
Excellent advice! Planted 3 FallRed everbearing raspberry plants 4 years ago, and now have a full 10’ row of luscious red raspberry plants. The roots are so prolific!! I have to sever roots with a shovel around the perimeter of the bed every year because the roots are so invasive-I found them creeping 6 feet from the bed one year! Just planted yellow Anne everbearing raspberry last year, and what a flavor difference! I don’t know where these have been all my life. Raspberries have been our favorite addition to the garden. Both have small thorns however, but are no problem (and no bleeding) with garden gloves. Picking raspberries doesn’t require gloves because berries aren’t near the heavier thorns on the thicker stems. Gloves are needed when trimming the older stems that have already fruited.
Wow! 3 plants turned into 10 feet?! I was worried I was underplanting, too. That's good to know! And I'll have to try the yellow Anne variety. There's always room to squeeze more plants in! 😈
After a year, and after adding mulch, I find I don’t need irrigation any more, and the brambles are still loaded with fruit. I only purchased ONE Anne raspberry plant 😊, because I now know how prolific these roots are. (I’m a patient girl). I know I’ll have plenty more in no time. New York Zone 7a.
I got one at Aldi that I soaked and planted and I started getting some berries! I would love a video on how to care for them after they are planted. :) Thanks for the knowledge sister!
I'm planting my first raspberry plants this year. They are transplants from a coworker. Your videos are so helpful. I'd love to see how you set up your irrigation system.
Very well done. Thank You. I live in Northern Ontario. They grow wild in the bush , I'll transplant some in a couple of weeks. Still a bit of snow this week.
They Are So tuff. They spread all over and all u do is cut off the dead canes and prune down the new canes a bit. Keep the weeds away. Grass is my worst weed. I never remove it but u should.
I have them in a soil with other plants nearby, flowers, trees. They grow nicely, slowly. Yes, fixing them is good. They are heavy. I am happy with a small harvest.
3 yrs ago I planted 10 yellow Anne plants. I now have a 25' long 4' wide thick patch. This year I did the same with 10 Red Caroline plants. I plan to feed the world. 😂
Another great vid! Thanks so much for sharing. I'd love to hear more about how you design and set up your irrigation system. I'm in Ky, Zone 6 and have had success with early brambles but the fall fruits develop drosophila flies. Not only do the flies get into the berries but if I bring the berries into the house I have flies in the house, too. Yuk. You are so right - if you plant 3 plants this year, you'll have a whole row in 3 years with plenty of suckers to share with neighbors.
Oh, Tooshie! How are you? :-) Yes I have issues with ants later in the season on my blackberries. I don't know how they know, but they will crawl 5 feet into the air to get to the TWO MOST SUCCULENT berries. 🤷♀️
Oh thank you Linda! That's the very best compliment I can get! I watch a lot of UA-cam videos and I HATE videos that just go on and on with no real info!
I love raspberries and blackberries, I have 6 varieties of raspberries and 2 varieties of thornless blackberries, Navajo & Arapaho. I planted 6 of each variety, the raspberries I have are Tulameen & Prelude reds, Double Gold & Honey Queen yellows, Brandywine purple, and Bristol black raspberry
I have 5 raspberry and 5 blackberry plants coming in 2 weeks. I went with the Polana and Chester varieties. This is one of my first ventures in gardening and I can't wait to see how it goes. My 3 in 1 pH reader is coming today, which will help me choose exactly where I want to plant them and what amendments I need to make to the soil. I cannot wait to harvest these berries from my yard with my sons. Thank you for the tips! I would love to see videos about composting - how to do it, when to buy it instead.
Compost is super easy! You can just make a pile somewhere in the corner of your yard. That's what I did for many years. Leaves, weeds, kitchen waste, roots, whatever you got. You don't even have to turn it. Eventually nature will take its course and the stuff at the bottom will be beautiful black gold. The only reason I made a compost bin is because I wanted to make a taller pile! 🤣
I planted one raspberry plant last summer. It didn't take long to realize it needed a trellis. I avoided anything metal because it is in full sun. I have an old wooden ladder that I want to use for something - would it work as a trellis for this rasperry bush? Thanks for the excellent video!
I am always so excited to see your videos pop up!!! April, you do a fine job of teaching gardening. We currently live in a rental but would love to have raspberries. Could we keep up potting the raspberries? Two of my children enjoy raspberries and we purchase them weekly so I know it would cost savings. Before I think of purchasing raspberries I would love to know how to take care of them. Thank you for your help. Have a great week. Happy Valentine's Day!
Oh Donna! Hello! How are you doing? :-) I haven't done it myself but I know that raspberries can be planted in containers. I would definitely encourage you to move to container gardening if you're in a rental and that way you can take it all with you. It takes a little more time to keep everything watered and sometimes landlords are a little weird about lots of plants outside. As with most things rental related, if you keep it tidy and attractive and don't cause anyone to complain the landlords will usually leave you alone.
@dorasestito5906 and @susanpace1322 - Yes! Birds are always a pain. I can tell what NOT to use-bird netting! I killed a bird within one day of putting it up. Come to find out later that the Audubon Society is on a mission to abolish the stuff it's so bad for birds! I'm gonna be trying row cover this year if it gets bad. I found though, that if I stay on top of the picking, the birds aren't as interested in semi-ripe fruit. I keep the ground clean of fallen fruit and pick the ripe stuff the first day it's ripe and try not to leave it hanging around for days to tempt them.

once you have thorn bush you learn how to handle em so you dont get thorned. dont worry about soil they will grow in anything. 1 plant turning into 8 plants. everbearing are better.
I have a question for you. I recently purchased 2 raspberry plants that did not sell during the planting season. It is now July, is it too late to plant? If so, will they survive in their pots until next spring?
Hello, can you realize them if they are set with fruit but not ripe yet? The leaves on the fruiting branches are a bit yellow/brown here and there. Assuming it's not mosaic virus
Curious if raspberry could be used as privacy fence in mostly shady area. We have some bushes and I was thinking to replace those with raspberries. If not, what other berry plants I could plant instead? Thanks!
It looked paltry in the first and second year, but this row I planted is a massive privacy screen now! About 5' tall and 2' deep. Probably TOO deep for harvesting purposes unfortunately. No way can you see through it. The only thing is that they lose their leaves over the winter, so you'll lose that screen then. If it's in an area that you don't use in the winter anyways (like a pool area), then it might not be an issue.
Prayers. LOL! For real though, I try to stay on top of the picking. I found that the animals get more interested when there's lots of fallen fruit and ripe berries hanging around. If the ground is clean and the only thing on the bushes is half-ripe berries, they animals aren't as interested. I use hardware cloth screens on my strawberry beds, but haven't needed to rig up something like that yet for the raspberries. Cross your fingers! It probably helps that the raspberry bed is literally 20 feet from a busy road. I have a lot less animal pressure that way. They're not dumb!
Yes! Strawberries like acidic soil, too, between 5.3 to 6.5, so any fertilizer you have for your raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries would also be good for strawberries.

Haha! Yes, I do try my best to make the garden seem as private as possible. Believe it or not, that fence separates the garden from my neighbor's driveway and those raspberries are about 20 feet from a very busy road! As far as placement, you can plant raspberries wide in a "patch" but it might be hard to get in there and harvest. You'll invariably miss some and need to step inside the bed to get to everything, which isn't good for the plants or soil.

Gosh, brown edges could be a lot of things. Could it be over watering? It's probably not sunburn since you have it inside. Try taking it outside and leaving it. You guys have enough rain in the UK 🤣. The sun and rain should take care of it. I got some raspberries in a pot right now outside and they're quite happy.

Also i want to know if it can be left outdoor in the rain.
@@ReSprout.
Maybe the prob is the fert. They are like Straw b.s. Need no fert. Also, why indoors?!
How long does it take to get raspberries from a new plant?
I didn't get any the first year but I did the second!
I am in 5b and I just bought a Heritage plant. Can I put it in a large grow bag ?
I've never used grow bags, but I guess my only question would be how long does the grow bag last? Raspberries live for many years.
@@ReSproutWouldn'tbthat be o.k. forvapt.dwellwrs tho? With plenty of room u can let them spread .
I really need to find someone who can teach me how to grow cranberrys and raspberrys so I can make an endless supply of cran raspberry juice please.
U can't grow crans . U need a bog. Ha! They grow in water.
@@Mmm...yummymummy theirs a Dry harvested and a wet harvested.
oh boy, I just planted 6 raspberry canes in clay soil and didn't amend it all..
How are they doing? You can always transplant them! Plants are amazingly resilient. I've transplanted by blueberries like 3 times.
Oh Ruby, nooo. Nothing grows in clay.
@@Mmm...yummymummy Me too! I went to high school in central Virginia, the WORST gloppiest densest red clay ever. Disgusting! I'm so thankful for my soil here!
I’m surprised you set up a water irrigation system. I watered in the beginning and then did not have to thereafter any my three heritage raspberry plants I took off so well… the plants had plenty of water… there was no need to give them addl water
Yeah, I found they don't need much water these days. The first year it was good I had it though.
