What about Jack's fertilizer which you swear by in another video and I just went out and bought? You use that when you are late in planting...which I am. Do you use the two in tandem every year?
Hi , love your channel, Question ; when your plants start to fruit do you ( or ) should I continue to give them fish fertilizer or do I stop when they start to bloom ? Please help , at a lose
A quick tip that really made my fertilising a little more pleasant: I replace the lid on my fish emulsion and seaweed emulsion with a sauce bottle lid. The sauce bottle lid is a screw on and then has a screw opening/closing top. No more stinky fingers from drips of fish emulsion.
Somebody said that if you're using it on houseplants not to let the water in the dish under the plant once you have used the fish fertilizer . Can somebody tell me if this is going to be a problem ... and if so , why ? I was about to transfer all my houseplants in the bigger containers with new soil and use this product so there will definitely be some extra watering and now I'm worried I'll harm the plants if they are sitting for awhile in the water with the fish emulsion .
@@danskdna8550 although I have my plants outside really it doesn't really smell that much ; and yeah I let them sit in a dish for a while ... it's not a problem at all .
My husband and I have multiple aquariums. 1 is 125 gallons. As well as 90 gallons. Plus several smaller aquariums. When we do water changes on our big tanks, I use the water from the tanks to water our garden as well as our indoor and outdoor plants. It is so beneficial to our plants and us. We use that water to help fertilize as well as save on adding water to our plants. I love its benefits.
I'm going to assume you have freshwater aquariums. If I did this with my 50g weekly water changes from my reef tanks I would kill my garden. Tho, I always wondered if I can use skim mate as a fertilizer.
@glenndevries9893 Ok wait, are you saying buy a whole bunch of worms and put them in some container and feed them food scraps, for how long am I doing this???
I live out in the “boonies” where a lot of different animals are free to roam through my property, and I’m able to use fish emulsion in my garden by sprinkling a bit of cinnamon over the soil after applying. Doesn’t hurt the plants, and keeps most things away.
I produce both products here in Brazil! My company is called Algas de Penha. One product is already for sale, which is the seaweed-based biostimulant. The fish fertilizer is in the final stages of production! I guarantee that both products are great for plants! Especially when used together! Congratulations on the video!
I grew up on Albemarle sound in NE NC and caught alot of fish ...My Grandmother ALWAYS asked that we bury all the fish remains in the garden once we cleaned our fish...we always had a big pretty garden year after year.
A year ago I knew nothing about figs and was asking you what I should do with my fig tree in the front yard that froze ( Houston Tx )......and now, thanks to you, I have 25 assorted figs trees ( one being from a cutting from your Ronde de Bourdeaux fig tree )...... Today I just picked my first fig of the year...a perfectly ripened Black Madeira .,,, ( BEAUTIFUL FIG ! )........ Any time I ever had questions concerning any of the cuttings or fig plants I purchased.........people would ask me if I knew that guy the "Millennial Gardener",,,, he's the one to ask? ....... Thanks to you and Dale for all of your help in the fig community, you are greatly appreciated!
My family are long time gardeners from West Coast 🇨🇦 we always use Alaska FF. Still today (2024) I feed everything with it & my folk’s used to plant fresh Salmon heads under all our Roses & they were the size of dessert plates- no kidding they were pretty spectacular!!
I've been using this stuff for the last 3 years. I don't have problems with critters in my raised beds. Where I do have problems is when I use blood and bone meal. My dogs won't stay away from it.
Fish Emulsion is like an organic compost tea. Already broken down and available to the plant immediately. It works great and fast. This and worm casting for a plants vegetative state will get you to the bloom phase. But I use at half strength as it builds up if used too often. Not too much of a smell. Sure if you stick your face right over it. But why would you do that?
I always come back to your channel for advice and recommendations for my backyard garden. Your channel is the best and I just want to say I appreciate the time you take to make these videos.
I've been using the Alaska FF for a few years now. It is FANTASTIC stuff. But it seems like it takes a while to actually work. Maybe it's suppose to IDK. But I can put it on my struggling tomatoes or bell peppers and 10 days later they still look like they are struggling. Give it a few more days to make it about 2 weeks and they just explode in growth. And that smell.....oh yeah. It has a very thick, unique, pungent odor. Quite a few times I've opened up the jug on a hot summer day and that smell will smack you right in the face. It stays in your nose for a few hours.
You certainly *can* use it indoors. It's totally safe, if you don't mind the smell. But they probably are referring to greenhouses, high tunnels, hydroponics, etc. - indoor growing operations.
I just gave my trees and palms the first feed of the year. Used a 4-1-1 fish emulsion and mixed it with kelp that had 4% Pottasium so the npk came of perfect for for those plants.
The only problem with Fish Emulsion is the high levels of metals found in it. Its better to make your own FAA, Fish Amino Acids. Also fermenting your own nutrients. Which is way cheaper.
Whenever I catch a few carp or sucker's I grind em up and use em in my garden. I also have been using the Alaska fish fertilizer and the Alaska nutrients line for 25+ yrs
Hearing about the dreadful Florida Hurricane. And reading that floods and terrible weather heading your way. Hope you stay safe and that you are not affected. From Perth Australia.
Thanks for your concern. It isn’t too bad here where I’m at. So far, a little over 2 inches of rain and some gusty winds, but no big deal. It didn’t even wake us up. I’ve had worse rain and winds during our afternoon thunderstorms during the summer. If this is the worst it gets for us, it is just a rain day.
Both products contains salts. To us when we hear the word salt we think of Sodium Chloride which is table salt (miracle gro doesn’t have that). However the word salt to a scientist or a chemist means the compounds of an element, for example let’s take Iron, Iron is a metal but you don’t find a block of iron inside the bag of fertilizer, what’s in the bag of the fertilizer is the salt or the compound of the element. Under this definition both organic and synthetic contains salts. The only differences between organic and synthetic are that one is immediately available to the plant and the other has to discompose first (which u mentioned in this video) and the second difference is that organic improves soil aggregation (in the ground only) and synthetic doesn’t. The reason why it improves soil aggregation in the ground only is because most potting mix or better said soilless mix doesn’t contain sand, silt and clay which are needed for soil aggregation. Awesome video by the way. I’m also in NC Zone 8a near Fort Bragg. Been watching your channel for some time now. Huge fan. Hope one day we can meet and talk gardening bro.
Anything organic will contain salts, because all life contains salts. If you garden outdoors, salt accumulation shouldn't be much of an issue since rainfall will naturally flush out the soil. Unless you're in a location where it doesn't rain in the summer (like SoCal where it's bone dry and well water is salty) or you grow in a greenhouse, it shouldn't be a concern. I appreciate you watching the channel!
My dogs love the fish emulsion! They lick the water that drips from my hanging flower baskets! One of them will even eat the dirt! I’m going to start using the kelp seaweed for my flowers. The fish emulsion is wonderful! Thank you for all the info you give us!
You're welcome! Be careful with the fish emulsion. I imagine that can cause upset stomachs. I am in the process of producing a video on how to keep dogs away from fertilizers. I hope to produce it within the next 1-2 weeks.
@@TheMillennialGardener we’re keeping them out of garden at this time bc I accidentally left the fertilizer out one night and a critter opened it and turned it over..during the rain we had recently. It was a mess! So I’ll use the kelp seaweed in areas they can get to. Look forward to the video!
Between you and me I would rather use a fish hydrolysate which is not cooked and doesn't smell so much instead of the emulsion which is cooked and smells to high heaven. I like this OMRI Listed Fish & Kelp Fertilizer by GS Plant Foods or Neptune's Harvest Tomato and Vegetable. Just my personal preference and like you say get what you can from local sources and as cheaply as possible. If you lived near a fishing port you could probably get your own fish material from the cleaning process and make your own. Now that would really smell. Keep up the great videos. I always learn something.
I have a fenced garden but have to deal with groundhog destruction. Besides "marking territory" (Pee contains nitrogen , potassium, and phosphorus, among other fertilizing products ;-)), I found that a funky fish fertilizer is great for repelling destructive herbivores such as woodchucks and rabbits. It feeds and protects the plants at the same time :) I've been using the Alaska brand and love it!
I have an extra brandywine plant which I planted late and away from my regular garden. As an experiment I combined 1 oz of fish emulsion and 1 oz of neptunes harvest 2-6-4 in a 2 gal. watering can and after about 1 week the explosion of foliage combined with some rather sizable blooms blew my mind-- the kicker being this plant just below 1' tall.
I just used this exact fish fertilizer, it’s super easy to use. Yes my dog was incredibly curious about the smell but I didn’t smell it once it was applied to my veggie garden. I can’t see the smell being an issue
@@TheMillennialGardener the one I use has a faint smell of seaweed. It is awesome for making roots and recovering damaged plants for a foliar spray. I add it to my worm compost tea. it is the best at keeping the good microbes happy.
You are my go to guy for gardening. You mentioned Fish Emulsion before and I have been using it ever since. My fig tree and tomatoes are out of the world. I just can’t put it on my potted plants because I did that once and wasn’t able to sit on my deck..
I've really upped my fertilizer game these past 2 years, and one thing I realized is that the kelp I've been using for 13 years, although it's good stuff, is so "weak" compared to fish emulsion fertilizers. This year will be my first using the fish emulsion, and I'm excited to see the impact it will have. Thank you!
Correct. Kelp meal, while fantastic in terms of micronutrients, is very weak. You'd have to use a lot of it to get results, and it will get expensive quickly. I like to mix 20-20-20 and fish emulsion for my outdoor plants and 20-20-20 and kelp for my indoor plants (since that won't be stinky for indoors). It's excellent in combination with a product like Jack's 20-20-20.
THANK YOU for your great videos!!! Alaska Fish fertilizer is an amazing product, especially if used in combination with liquid kelp and Texas Tomato Food fertilizer. I use Espoma Tomato Tone, Black Kow compost, and mushroom soil compost when planting seedlings for their long-term effect. My sweet pepper plants in '23 were not less than 5 feet tall and full of peppers. The tallest was over 8 feet. I use 10-foot-tall metal t-posts for support and plant 4 peppers around each post. The extra leaves of 4 plants together protect the peppers from sunburn. Honeybees go into the tops of the plants to pollinate. One group of 6-foot-tall peppers last October had over 100 peppers (of all sizes) on it. Extra space is given between groups of plants. The variety I use was listed to grow 32-36 inches tall. The breeder said that they had never seen pictures of this variety growing that tall---2 years in a row. In '22, the tallest was over 7 feet tall. Note: My raised bed garden is about 20 inches tall, zone 7a. I now believe that sweet peppers like to grow closely together and compete with each other for light (like trees in the forest). See the 5-star reviews on Amazon for Alaska Fish fertilizer. They tell the story of those who use this fertilizer. People will ask how you manage to have such an amazing garden! This 50-year gardener wishes you and your viewers the very best! TEACH A CHILD to grow plants!!! SS
Last year I started using a combination of Fish and Seaweed, and also Worm Tea on my lawn and flower gardens which I mix together and apply with a batterie-operated sprayer, all from Petra Tools. As far as I can tell, they work great. This year I've had to mow my lawn every 3 to 5 days and my shrubs and flowers are larger and fuller. In fact, I now have earthworms in my lawn which I never had for the first 7 years of owning this property.
For anyone concerned with the smell, I use this on my garden, and I live in hot humid south Florid. it smells like saltwater, and more of a smell that you would imagine walking on a pier at the beach. Instead of a funky rotten fish smell, it’s more of a fishy beach kind of odor. And I mean real beach smell not the fake candle scent and suntan lotion smell that stores try to sell you 😂Honestly, I’ve never had an issue with the smell, and I’ve never had any of my neighbors complain. But then again, I live in Florida, so maybe we’re all just used to it 😅
🤣🤣👍. And the smell actually disapates quickly enough. But you are so right about the beach smell. I was thinking same thing other day after using some. I’ve used it for years. I’ve also collected seaweed that’s come on shore. To put in my garden. Smells like that. And that disapates quickly too. (Good call on discribing it though! 👍)
I love the Alaska fish fertilizer also. If I have a plant that stops growing, I juice it with this product, and it jumps into growth. It doesn't seem to stop the production of figs either. I thought too much nitrogen might stop figs forming, but it seems to have the opposite effect, and I am getting fig formation on this year's cuttings. Watch for clearance sales at the end of the season. I love foliar feeding on young cuttings just leafing out.
If you plant a diversity of things and check on it every day, you'll always be successful. Every year, there are good years for some crops and bad years for others. If you plant enough differing things, something always does well.
seems like a really good product, but doesn't the heavy focus on nitrogen make it pretty specific in what it should be used on? Like what if you're growing something that is supposed to have a balance fertilizer? Wouldn't this be less than ideal?
I'd suggest trying "Backcountry Grow" we used it this year, and I’m amazed-our plants didn’t need any additional nutrients. Just a weekly top-dress and some worm tea once a month were all we needed. our soil mix "Pro-Mix HP" "Roots Organics 707" "Clay Pebbles" and last but not least "sardines" yes sardines in bottom of smart pot
Love the part about using during transplanting. I typically apply some crab meal directly to the roots durring transplanting and it works like a dream. Same concept. Great video. Keep up the good work!
I enjoy and learn so much from your channel. Your delivery is very confident and passion for gardening and passing on information. Im new to gardening. I live in 9B and my cucumbers and tomatoes flopped.Im not giving up,and getting excited to see if this 2nd round of cucumbers and Tomatoes Thank you
This fish feed and their other product More Bloom are amazing for the dessert area I live in. Our plants look so great this year and I've only started using them 2 months ago!! Can't wait for May when most of our greenery really comes in to see the effect. I do want to try kelp next!
On another channel the guy says don't let your potted plants sit in the dishwater that has the fish Emulsion in it ... I don't understand why this would be a problem ... do you ? I'm about to transfer most of my houseplants to bigger containers with fresh dirt and was going to give them all an extra nice watering and I know there will be some water sitting at the bottom under them in the dish but now I'm worried about this causing some kind of harm to the plants' roots ?
Thank you for such an informative video. Your channel provides great information and gets right to the point. As a novice gardener uncertain about using fish emulsion, you've got me convinced
@@mariap.894 Common practice is to apply stored (aged) urine diluted with water. Fresh urine can contain pathogenic bacteria, so pH-raise due to ammonia is desired to disinfect the urine. Struvite precipitation can occur but struvite is bioavaliable and a great fertilizer. This takes about 90 days. (PS the smell increases as a result)
Sorry, but I can't find your original video and just wanted to give you a shout out for your recommendations. In the video you recommended a Japanese tree saw for pruning and some hand-held pruners. I purchased them and I am shouting with joy. I love these amazing little tools. They have made my life so much easier in the garden. I have some hand issues and these just cut through the thick branches like butter. They were also super affordable. I am a huge fan of your channel and am so happy I found you. I have needy fruit trees in desert soil (very alkaline). Could I combine 5-1-1 fish emulsion and 0-10-10 liquid emulsion for flowers in order to feed both leaves and fruit? What is your opinion on that? Thanks for your clear and concise videos.
@@mariap.894 Breathing in the guano dust is a big concern of mine too. I try hard to avoid breathing any in. I also put compost on top of it afterwards. I believe it is cheaper now to buy fish meal, fish bone meal, kelp meal, crab meal, and shrimp meal than it is to buy bat guano or seabird guano. So, it is probably better for your lungs and wallet to use those instead of guano considering the recent price increase of guano. Though I think the guano costs a little less than the liquid fish emulsion
I heard an old farmer say that liquid fertilizers are for suckers becuase you are paying for mostly water. I think it may be cheaper to buy solid fish meal fertilizer, and then mix a few cups of that into a 5 gallon bucket with water and let it sit for a few days to make one's own fish emulsion.
@@juneshannon8074 Yes, you can buy fish meal on amazon for about $23 for 5lbs, NPK 8-6-0. I suspect this fish meal could be used to make at least 50 gallons of fish emulsion. Or, you can buy 1gallon of fish emulsion on amazon for about $36
The problem with meals is the nutrients are not readily available to plants. That farmer does not understand the difference between soluble fertilizers and fertilizers that require long-term decomposition. If your plants need a boost right now, solid fertilizers will not help. They take weeks to break down and slowly release their nutrients. Fish emulsion is a very powerful concentrate. That's why you only need a couple tablespoons per gallon. It certainly isn't "mostly water." A chicken breast is 75% water, but I doubt the farmer would consider it so 🐔
@@TheMillennialGardener Yes, I agree that the liquid fish emulsion is probably able to be absorbed more quickly by the plant than putting fish meal, crab meal, fish bone meal, shrimp meal, kelp meal, etc. on top of the soil. These solid meals likely take several weeks to breakdown and decompose to become bioavailable to to the plants. However, I believe that if you account for the total NPK that will be taken up by the plant over the course of several months, that the solid "meals" end up providing more bang for the buck than the liquid fertilizers over time.
You are my go to guy for gardening. You mentioned Fish Emulsion before and I have been using it ever since. My fig tree and tomatoes are out of the world. I just can’t put it on my potted plants because I did that once and wasn’t able to sit on my deck.😂😂.
@@lockoutxx in my experience, once you water it in the ground, I don't detect it at all 30 mins later. But in a potted plant, that's another story. Potted plants, it can hang around awhile.
How far away are your fruit trees planted in the ground? Can you do a video about fruit tree spacing and weather or not to add soil amendments when planting fruit trees in the ground? Thank you.
My spacing varies. I have countless videos on fruit trees, and I always discuss spacing at planting. The spacing depends on my design, how I'm going to prune them, what they are, whether they need cross-pollination, etc. I recommend going through my playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PL1gY7BoYBGIEwNvlpSq5wSnyKDK2_v5wv.html
Look up 3 trees in one hole. I planted 4 in one hole. But you have to prune them as if they're one tree. Those videos will tell you how and when to prune. Mine have been going fine for two years and have already set fruit.
I use fish fertilizer but concerned about so much nitrogen. Good to get plants started. The main problem we had this year is it called a coon into the garden. He scaled the fence probably by compost bin. It took us a couple days to figure it out as we’ve had voles for first time in my life, but this was unusually tore up and I wasn’t happy-we set a live trap and got it. We are in severe drought/heat in WI and everything wants our stuff.
For ease of use, could you use a Miracle Gro garden feeder, fill with the fish emulsion and use as a hose end sprayer. Incidentally, the emulsion helps repel deer.
Wow!! That was all the info I was looking for! I’m totally checking out the kelp fertilizer. You had a solution to everything! Thanks!! Thanks! And thanks!!
Awesome video! I just got my first bottle of fish emulsion and I'm now heading out to try it! One thing I wanted to say about Dale and his Kong. I used to give my girl kongs. She would do the same thing and tear them up immediately. It was all good until it wasn't. I bought her probably 10 to destroy before she actually ate the hard Kong rubber and they got stuck in her intestinal tract. $4300 later, a long scary surgery and she's okay but it was touch and go for a few days. Just wanted to caution you to not let him eat the rubber.
I've seen people use miracle gro and have luscious plants with large yields whether its tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant but also yield can be increased by pruning , watering, and fertilizing.
HELP needed ASAP ..... I am growing outdoor container Vege's plants for the first time , ( tomato's , peppers , radishes , onions , pea's & beans ) it's been more than a decade since i done a grow garden and i have never really used any form of Fertilizers so this year being the first i am using Fox Farm big bloom, with an NPK of 0-5-7 and after watching quite a few of your vid's these past few weeks i am learning just how valuable & important the NPK is for all the different stages of growing .... as you can see Fox Farm Big bloom has ZERO - 0 Nitrogen , My question is i just picked up Alaska Fish Fert / emulsion 5-1-1 and since it has the Nitrogen that i am lacking in the early stages of my container plants , ( not seedlings ) most plants are just about the flowering stages IE: tomato's & peppers ) my plants are producing some fruits but the plants themselves seem to be somewhat stunted / slow growing ..i assumes its because a lot of the plants energy is going into the fruiting and not growing tall or a lot of foliage . So i am a little concerned my plants will continue to suffer if something doesn't change . With that said and as mentioned i picked up the Alaska fish emulsion 5-1-1 today for the nitrogen mostly ...Can i use the fox farm big bloom along with the Fish Fert say at half strength for both products in the same watering can ? or would you suggest staggering product use , or just using the Fish emulsion as a stand alone ? if you are not familiar with Fox Farm big bloom it's used as a general feeding and can be used at every other watering since it's all organic and gentle fert ( bat guano & worm casting ) i just don't want to end up burning roots or stressing out the plant from over fertilizing or a buildup of nutrients . Can you please advise on the best way to use these two products together so that i can get the benefits of intended properties of NPK or just using the fish emulsion as a stand alone once ever 2-3 weeks where as the Fox farm can be used at every other watering since i am trying to add some needed Nitrogen into the feeding . Sorry so long , hope this all makes some sense Thank you in advance.
Although I’m new to gardening, I recently watched a video from Gary Pilcheck - the Rusted Garden, on mixing fertilizers and calculating ratios. *IF I remember correctly, you add ingredients off each, so 0-5-7 and 5-1-1 = 5-6-8, then divide by 2 (because 2 different fertilizers), and you get your ratio of 2.5-3-4. But what do I know, I’m barely 2 months into a new hobby 😂 🤷♂️ Checkout Gary for sure (sorry to plug another channel, Millennial)❤
@@mcgritty8842 thank you for the info. Do you remember that the title of that video might be ? He has quite a few vids on fertilizing ( 20-30) I have watched a couple so far but haven't found where he talks about mixing / using two together and or adding the numbers together . ( with what you said above about the 0-5-7 with the 5-1-1 to get 5-6-8 is kinda how I figured it would come out but since I am so new to all this as well I just didn't want to play pretend chemist and over fertilize and really screw things up. ) if nobody else chimes in or I can't find that particular video you mentioned , maybe I will do both at half strength once every 7-10 days , or just stick with the fish emulsion once every 3 weeks as directed .
@@kenhappen2u also, a lot of gardeners I watch advise to use half/less strength dose anyway, just to test it before going for a full dose and possibly have issues. Imo because it’s liquid fertilizer and immediately available, play it safe with less. You can always add a second dose in a few days if you want. Everyone says part of gardening is experimenting and seeing what works for you. Happy growing! I hope your veggies grow abundantly ❤️
More great info.😃 I have a croton tree that is 50+ years old. I recently found it love 511. The smell goes quickly indoors...and I have a sensitive nose. Cute Dale! Thanks for sharing your sweet boy with us!😃🐕
The brand isn't very important. It's the fish emulsion I'm promoting, not necessarily the Alaska brand. Any product you can source affordably is great.
I love fish fertilizer, it work so good for my garden. It just I had an experience of a spill inside my car, when I make a turn and the lip wasn't shut tight, a lot spill, OMG! the smell is horrible we bring it to the professional car wash twice they can't get the smell out, then at home I clean many time and leave the window down at all time, finally after 1yr the smell gone.
I'm trying the Fish Emulsion with Miracle-Gro, as you showed. I'm hoping it makes a huge difference, but it's too early to tell, because I'm in 5b Zone. I also powdered the roots of any vegetable transplants with Bonemeal as I was planting them. And I plan to add more throughout the growing season. I tried wormcastings, and haven't seen a difference in my tomatoes so far. Thank you for this information. Great video.
I’m concerned about high nitrogen as another video he mentions Miracle Grow general purpose has high nitrogen. I just use fish to get the plants started and close to bloom hit the phosphorus. Bonemeal has phosphorus and I do use that, but more recently I’ve been looking at bloom boosters and they say can be used on vegetables. Most places don’t sell high phosphorus because it gets into the waterways and they say we have plenty in soil-well, maybe. I have sandy soil and we are in drought and high heat so we water a lot. I generally prefer granular.
Have you ever used RAW nutrients from NPK Industries in Medford Oregon packaged as a powder to mix with water. can be used for hydroponics and outside gardens alike. Many liquid fertilizers are over 90% water you're paying for. They also help build soils rather than leach the nutrients out. Also use it on Pumpkins with tremendous results.
This is the video I was searching for. I needed to get a natural liquid fertilizer for my potted plants and did not know which to get at the garden center. Good bye miracle grow.
Thank you very informative maybe I can you some of the fish formula in my rat cages or squirrel cage traps , will certainly use for my avocado trees lemons and mangos . Question ......Can I Use the fish fertilizer for my Cuban Royal and King palm trees? thank you again
Ok, I'll try that as I have a lot of plants that need it today. I've got a lot of leafy veggies and I'd like to get the berry vines growing. Thanks for the tip!
I have done and used about every thing for fertilizer in gardens. Hands down the best way is raw chicken manure with a shot of lime applied in the fall. No weeds, no need for any more fertilizer. Plant and harvest.
I love AgroThrive! I started using a few years ago too. Of course it stinks in jug, but when I apply around plants and water in, the smell goes away. At least to me. I don’t usually have a fly problem, and only had one cat last year who tried to make one box his own.
i'm new to gardening and will be growing many different vegetables like tomatoes, basil, broccoli etc. Will liquid seaweed be the only thing i need or do i need anything else to go with it? Appreciate the video.
I'm a newbie as well,(10 days ago I started container gardening)for my soil i mix organic potting mix,cow manure, bone and blood meal, tomato fertilizer and peat moss... I will be using fish fertilizer pretty soon and Sevin insecticide spray, they also make a powder....
During the 70’s-80’s this was all I used to grow , well other plants, plants with buds at the top. But I to this day use the fish fertilizer, i have even done a comparison……used only this on a plant and used another brand on the other for one year……its truly the best you can buy……it’s a bit expensive, well worth the money.
I made my own fish fertiliser out of fish heads, guts, scales & bones..I dilute it..havent done it in a while, we have had sooo much rain in Sydney, Australia...I love the odour, because my neighbours dont!😀 we dont have NPK on our fertiliser packets sadly..
I've found the opposite to be true. Fish fertilizer typically has more NPK and micronutrients since fish are inherently more nutritious than grass and leaves, but it could be a concentration issue. If one was applied at a different frequency or amount, it could affect things. It also could affect different vegetation differently. I haven't had as significant of results with kelp by comparison, and it also tends to be more expensive than fish fertilizer. I think kelp is a good alternative for indoor plants since it doesn't have the smell. Fish fertilizer would be almost impossible to use indoors.
Great video. I don't think anyone disagrees that fish fertilizer works, but some like Robert Pavlis have written it is super expensive and some claims about fish are just not true. For example, the fish hydrolysate marketing people often tout "oils and growth hormones." Pavlis makes the argument that plants can't take up large molecules like oil and proteins and thus these are broken down into small molecules like nitrate and phosphate. The same molecules one could get from say compost or coffee at a fraction of the price. What are your thoughts MG?
Awesome Channel with great info... For me, I had a problem with the fish.. A few years ago I tried fish emulsion... It attracted Racoons and they dug up all my plants..
I dont know....i figured why not for $20? My garden is doing amazing so far this year. Is it the fish fert? I don't know but gardening is so much more enjoyable when you arent struggling to have healthy plants. Thank you.
FIRST explanation on bio-available I’ve heard. Well done! I’ve heard many describe organic fertilizer as “slow acting” or used to ”feed the soil”. Your presentation is waaay better, thank you! Salt residue - important info! 👍🏻 And then, my engineering gardener guru says….”pour in one glug”. 🤣🤣 (Totally accurate description btw). Noting your rain catchment set-up ….. PLEASE DO A VIDEO on the rain catchment. I bought 2 fabulous 165 gal barrels and need to set those up. Do you use this as a foliar spray?
What about Jack's fertilizer which you swear by in another video and I just went out and bought? You use that when you are late in planting...which I am. Do you use the two in tandem every year?
Hi , love your channel,
Question ; when your plants start to fruit do you ( or ) should I continue to give them fish fertilizer or do I stop when they start to bloom ?
Please help , at a lose
Can I add fish emulsion at the same time I add osmocote plus? I only use osmocote plus twice a year and plan to use fish emulsion every couple weeks.
Great tip
Brilliant!!
Intelligent!
I love this stuff!
I'm going to assume you have freshwater aquariums. If I did this with my 50g weekly water changes from my reef tanks I would kill my garden. Tho, I always wondered if I can use skim mate as a fertilizer.
@Glenn De Vries I'm a newbie,(10 days)how exactly do I use worms in my container garden???
@glenndevries9893 Ok wait, are you saying buy a whole bunch of worms and put them in some container and feed them food scraps, for how long am I doing this???
I change 500 gallons a week, during the summer, I have 75ft of tubing that will reach my garden. Multi tasking 😂
In fall, Walmart often markdown Fish emulsion to clearance .
Yep
That's where I got mine.
I live out in the “boonies” where a lot of different animals are free to roam through my property, and I’m able to use fish emulsion in my garden by sprinkling a bit of cinnamon over the soil after applying. Doesn’t hurt the plants, and keeps most things away.
Great tip, thank you!
Black pepper is also good
Great tip! It’s crazy how mos of us humans love cinnamon, but to most animals it’s quite repulsive!
That’s the best natural fertilizer I believe, works great for me, ❤
A year ago I knew nothing about figs and was asking you what I should do with my fig tree in the front yard that froze ( Houston Tx )......and now, thanks to you, I have 25 assorted figs trees ( one being from a cutting from your Ronde de Bourdeaux fig tree )......
It brought a coon into our garden.
Yes they all love the organic ferts. Haha
I have squirrels, raccoons, bunny's. They do dig some but actually do minimal damage.
But why would you do that?
do u know how to kill brown patch fungus on grass naturally
after my first time using it i swore to always wear gloves. it was so hard to wash away the smellll
I love your rain barrel setup. I wish you would do a video on how you do that and where you got your containers.
They actually say on the label of fish fertilizer for indoor and outdoor use. Inside? Maybe at the ax murderers house.
🤣🤣
You certainly *can* use it indoors. It's totally safe, if you don't mind the smell. But they probably are referring to greenhouses, high tunnels, hydroponics, etc. - indoor growing operations.
I also love the liquid fish because it makes my garden smell like the beach
I put a can of sardines in my pot before I put the plant in, and I have beautiful tomatoes
@@TheMillennialGardener very pleased to hear this!
Yes I use the Fish fertilizer in my garden and it really works great 👍🏾
It’s definitely my favorite fertilizer overall. Thanks for watching!
The Alaska 5-1-1 is awesome! First hand experience!
It’s my favorite.
@@TheMillennialGardener you read my mind. I was going to throw that ball at you if you said something else. Lol
I caught one of my french bulldogs licking the gallon bottle. I put all that stuff up high now.
Do your pour some around your fence???
It brings in coon, I know that.
The liquid kelp is my go to for everything from orchids to hot peppers.
How do you like it? The product I featured in the video is totally odorless. At least, I can't smell anything.
@@TheMillennialGardener Thanks!
I’ve started using this!
Great vid. Thanks.
I’m from Jacksonville, just up Hwy 17.

My mother LOVES ❤️❤️ this fertilizer. She was right to suggest it to me for plants that need a little BOOST or to recover from pests or disease.
This stuff is concentrated magic 😊
Last year I started using a combination of Fish and Seaweed, and also Worm Tea on my lawn and flower gardens which I mix together and apply with a batterie-operated sprayer, all from Petra Tools. As far as I can tell, they work great. This year I've had to mow my lawn every 3 to 5 days and my shrubs and flowers are larger and fuller. In fact, I now have earthworms in my lawn which I never had for the first 7 years of owning this property.
That's good to hear. Fish emulsion is often used for foliar feeding.
What about critters? Any problems?
I would compare the smell to river water, or irrigation ditch water.
@@NecieytheGREAT no problems
Love your clear explanations and direct approach. Your channel helps thousands of us with our gardens
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support and generosity! I really appreciate it ❤
Great product, I use fish emulsion and sea kelp on all my plants and see great results.
Your garden “never” fails? I wish I was that blessed!! 😂
If you plant a diversity of things and check on it every day, you'll always be successful. Every year, there are good years for some crops and bad years for others. If you plant enough differing things, something always does well.
I go through that stuff like water. I buy 4 at a time. Also love Morbloom made by same company.
seems like a really good product, but doesn't the heavy focus on nitrogen make it pretty specific in what it should be used on?

I've been going with my own #1. Best fertilizer ever! Everything is green and blooming!
That works a little better if you age then dilute. I like to a bit to my worm castings tea brews.
@@AlvinMcManus Would it be too much to ask if you explain the aging process, please? Sounds interesting😊👍

I have needy fruit trees in desert soil (very alkaline). Could I combine 5-1-1 fish emulsion and 0-10-10 liquid emulsion for flowers in order to feed both leaves and fruit? What is your opinion on that? Thanks for your clear and concise videos.
Also, Bat Guano and Seabird guano are really good as well. And, sulfate of potash.
MichaelF@ I'm petrified to use Guano😱
I think - respiratory problems-🙆
@@mariap.894 Breathing in the guano dust is a big concern of mine too. I try hard to avoid breathing any in. I also put compost on top of it afterwards. I believe it is cheaper now to buy fish meal, fish bone meal, kelp meal, crab meal, and shrimp meal than it is to buy bat guano or seabird guano. So, it is probably better for your lungs and wallet to use those instead of guano considering the recent price increase of guano. Though I think the guano costs a little less than the liquid fish emulsion
Got a fire pit. Use wood ash and your pee. If your not on chemotherapy or taking drugs your good to go. It’s free and does work. Water the soil only.
Put down wood ash. Get a five gallon bucket. 10% urine and 90% water. You’ll have great tomatoes that everyone will love.
Is solid fish meal available to buy? Like you, I don’t like paying for water.
It certainly isn't "mostly water." A chicken breast is 75% water, but I doubt the farmer would consider it so 🐔
@@TheMillennialGardener I for one, thank you most sincerely for your explanation. You have saved me from making a mistake

How long does the smell linger
@@TheMillennialGardener how long does the fish smell last?

I use organic GS Fish & Kelp fertilizer. It's NPK is 2-3-1. It works awesome.
Outstanding! I don't think the brand matters. Fish fertilizer is universally awesome!
For ease of use, could you use a Miracle Gro garden feeder, fill with the fish emulsion and use as a hose end sprayer. Incidentally, the emulsion helps repel deer.
I don’t see why that wouldn’t work actually.
I did this very thing last year. It goes a lot quicker and you don't have to carry around watering cans. I have a big garden on a hilly lot.
Can you use the fish fertilizer on seedings?

@@kenhappen2u if link doesn’t work, it’s called “save money & blend your own all purpose fertilizer.” About 5 minutes in he explains it
@@kenhappen2u also, a lot of gardeners I watch advise to use half/less strength dose anyway, just to test it before going for a full dose and possibly have issues. Imo because it’s liquid fertilizer and immediately available, play it safe with less. You can always add a second dose in a few days if you want. Everyone says part of gardening is experimenting and seeing what works for you.
Happy growing! I hope your veggies grow abundantly
❤️
I am learning SO much from this channel. THANK YOU for the valuable information you share.
I'm so happy to hear that! Thanks so much for watching!
More great info.😃 I have a croton tree that is 50+ years old. I recently found it love 511. The smell goes quickly indoors...and I have a sensitive nose.
Cute Dale! Thanks for sharing your sweet boy with us!😃🐕
You use fish emulsion indoors? That's commitment. I won't even do that; that's what the kelp is for 😅 Dale says hi!
@@TheMillennialGardener 😄 The smell seems to go away quickly. I only use it on the one plant. Howdy back to Dale.😃
I use Neptune's harvest fish and seaweed blend, gotta shout out for my local businesses
Love the Fish Fertilizer! Its good stuff.
Plants love it!
Thank you for the info! I have fish emulsion and worm tea! I'll use them more often this year.
Could you make a video about your watering system, please? What materials you used? How you collect water in the water barrels?, etc.
I have a playlist dedicated to this here: ua-cam.com/play/PL1gY7BoYBGIHHHsx0JPcYgD4xXzA96usL.html
@@TheMillennialGardener thanks a lot!
Hi hopefully someone sees this comment. Do you combine the fish emulsion with other fertilizer to increase NPK ratios? And if so when and what with?
Thank you very informative
maybe I can you some of the fish formula in my rat cages or squirrel cage traps ,
will certainly use for my avocado trees lemons and mangos .
Question ......Can I Use the fish fertilizer for my Cuban Royal and King palm trees?
thank you again
I love that my garden smells like the ocean!
Thank you for the valuable and detailed information. I appreciate your efforts, from Pennsylvania zone 5.
Question..does the fish fertilizer have an expiration date?..mine is a few years old😮…love your channel❤
Agrothrive is fish emulsion. I've been using it for a few years and it's AMAZING!
I love AgroThrive! I started using a few years ago too. Of course it stinks in jug, but when I apply around plants and water in, the smell goes away. At least to me. I don’t usually have a fly problem, and only had one cat last year who tried to make one box his own.
That fish fertilizer is the best thanks for sharing
I used plant tone and my tomato's are growing
I wonder what the ratio of NPK in rain water because the plants respond the best to rain water.
We are in severe drought in WI and I can attest the plants prefer rain water over well water. I hope it rains this weekend as it’s been over a month.
This guy really knows his stuff. if I want to know anything about gardening I come to this channel
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
i'm new to gardening and will be growing many different vegetables like tomatoes, basil, broccoli etc.
I utilized Alaska fish both this year and the previous year, but I found that it didn't perform as well as Neptune's seaweed from the sea.
Very well explained! Thank you so much!❤
Great video.
Thank you.
Great video Anthony, how many time do feed the pepper plants with fish ferterlizer 5-1-1 please let me know .and thank you again.
Would love to see your brainiac approach to install and your insight into rainwater off an asphalt roof. It’s an important part of gardening, right? Thanks for THIS quality video! 👍🏻
