  • Hey, here's the video of the jewelry box I´ve made as a gift before Christmas. It took me nearly 35 hours in total, not counting the filming. I used walnut for the body and black cherry for the inserts. I was planning to use brass hinges, but the ones I ordered looked pretty cheap, so I decided to skip them for now and keep looking. If anyone has any tips for small, high-quality brass hinges, please drop me a line!
    *Edit: Since some of you have asked which tools I used in the video, here is a list. I won't mention any brand names, just the name of the tool...
    In the list, I differentiate again between absolutely necessary and convenient ;)
    Absolutely necessary:
    Plane
    Chisels
    Saws (I used a Japanese Ryoba and a Dotsuki)
    Good ruler
    Grinding block
    Clamps
    Sharp knife (for marking)
    Guided grinding helper (I don’t know the correct term - the thing I used for sharpening the plane iron and for the mitre joints on brass)
    Metal saw
    Convenient:
    Ground router
    Marking Gauge
    Mini Plane (for bevelling edges)
    Here is a list of materials:
    Walnut wood:
    1000x200x10mm (1x)
    1000x150x10mm (1x)
    600x150x6mm (2x)
    1000x10x2mm (2x)
    Cherry wood:
    600x150x6mm (3x)
    Brass:
    200x25x2mm (1x)
    200x10x2mm (1x)
    Sandpaper (180,240,320 for wood, 400-2000 for brass)
    Wood glue
    2 component epoxy glue (for brass)
    Masking tape (Strong)
    Felt for the inlays(I used 3mm)
    Wax or oil for the finish (I used a mixture of boiled linseed oil, carnauba wax and beeswax)
    I ordered the boards for the box here:
    modellbau-holz...
    (I don't know if he delivers outside of Germany though)

    Using the ho ing guide to get the perfect angle on the brass pieces is brilliant. I cannot believe I never thought of that

      Haha! Thank you - it took me a moment to get the idea too. But let me tell you: the first attempts to make it „freehand“ with an angle gauge were not very successful! And my shouted comments about it weren't suitable for children either :)

    Beautiful work and one of the best box making videos I've seen, and I've seen a lot of them! The only thing I would change is to add hinges, otherwise perfect!

    You have serious skill to be able to saw a box lid off with a hand saw. The use of your plane jig to get the 45-degree on the brass is awesome, and I never thought to put tape on the saw when cutting splines off. Great idea.
    Someone else recommended Brusso hinges - they're the best. I like your solution better, though.
    I'd personally also finish the interior of the box before glue-up just to make it easier.
    Last - I'd recommend a circular fabric cutting wheel (a tool) to cut your tray liners - it seemed the force of the knife dragging through the suede (?) pulled it slightly out of square.

    • @alex_makes.
      @alex_makes.  Місяць тому +1

      Hey Matt, thanks for the detailed comment! Sawing the lid off is a challenge every time - but if the saw is sharp enough and you give yourself enough time, it really works without any problems! I've had a look at the Brusso hinges, they look fantastic! They do come at a price, but I think they are definitely worth it. And thanks for the tip with the round fabric knife, I will order it! Best regards, Alex

    Superbe travail, permets moi une petite remarque : pourquoi un usage exclusif du papier de verre là où l'usage d'un rabot ou d'un grattoir aurait suffit ?

    • @alex_makes.
      @alex_makes.  Місяць тому

      Eh bien, pour être honnête, j'avais peur de tout gâcher avec le rabot. Je ne suis pas très douée avec le rabot quand il s'agit de faire des finitions. Et comme c'était les dernières étapes de travail, le papier de verre m'a semblé être un choix sûr ^^.

      @alex_makes.  8 днів тому

      @@Tiocfaidh_mo_lá Well, I see it more like this: the recipient was really happy and I had a lot of fun building the box. As I am not a craftsman but only do this in my spare time, I am very happy with it despite the faults. In my opinion, it's still a nice box, but you seem to have higher expectations. I hope that if someone gives you something they built themselves for Christmas, it will be perfect and satisfy you. If it does have a small imperfection, do them a favour and say something nice anyway ;)

    • @Tiocfaidh_mo_lá
      @Tiocfaidh_mo_lá 8 днів тому

      @@alex_makes. You gifted that to somebody… oh my… Well, I "…have higher expectations…" because you went through the process of editing the video and then posting it even though by your own admission you are "not a craftsman" and the box had "imperfections" … it is a pity the title of your channel and title of video doesn't say as much. Even whilst watching you make mistakes I thought this will be good because we will see how this woodworker fixes the problems (the essence of all good woodworking) but sadley no, it wasn't to be. Also it is a shame you don't point out the idiosyncrasies of the project to all those heaping praise on you in the other comments…!?! It is almost as if you are okay with people's opinions as long as they are blowing smoke up your arse. The truth hurts bother. I stand by my first comment. "It's a shame the joinery doesn't fit. That might have been a nice box" - Do better, make better videos, get more subscribers. I wish you well.
