This video is about Shirley's childhood and her relationship with her Father and God. References to her Father's job as geneticist and the redhead girl in unfamiliar surroundings but also laboratories is her as a child. Magnetization really means polarisation between her Father's religious beliefs and Shirley's atheism. When she says "I'm not in love" this is reference to love of god and Shirley only ever felt this only as a child and cannot rediscover it as an adult.
Their music didn't become a mainstream, because Garbage is so unique, and I think this is the best compliment to the band, that their songs isn't just pop shit

Because of illegal streaming, you just can't make the money you used to. As a result, record companies have way too much power over mainstream artists. This is why the mainstream basically feels like a small pot of artists all repeatedly collaborating with each other in various combinations and working with the same producers. The record companies enforce this because it is playing it safe. You get some great music here and there, but creativity and diversity is massively suppressed. Maybe artists earned too much money in the past, i don't know, but now it has gone too far the other way. You do as you're told, or you fade away.
When you hear the musicians of Garbage and Shirley Manson speak you get the impression that they are in fact a little weird and unique and have their own minds. What they are doing is partially pop but so much more than that. They can get in many different directions if they want to. Like "Strange Little Birds" has significant Trip Hop influences.
I don't think that Garbage fits in any musical classification because nothing sounds like Garbage, and nothing ever will! It's unique, never gets old, and I'm proud to say that I've grown up with their sound.

What a lot of people don't realize is how much the little girl looks like her as a little girl, if you see pictures, it's shocking! This song is partially about her past struggles with being different, being her weird self, i'm guessing this song is a love letter to herself, overcoming her self-esteem issues in the past, not being okay with herself for the longest time even on stage in the past. So this is her talking to herself in a mirror, fighting the voices in her head, finally telling herself she loves who she is over hating it anymore. How i interpret it. :)

But the real solution is inside the person, that's why love yourself is the best option instead of looking for people who would "understand" your problems.
Shirley was a model for me when I was teen, but now that I 'm thirty-two years old, she is a very exaple for freedom to be herself. The Garbarge and their sound are the costant in my life.
I've been exploring their music from the late 90s and early 2000s, then I found they released a new album. I thought "Oh, great, another amazing classic band has probably put out something overly modernized and shitty", but I was pleasantly surprised. This song is amazing.

Garbage is one of those bands that keeps Rock and good music alive with a some help from a couple new bands that thanks God do the same heroic thing in a world so filled with shitty sounds called "music" by the industry and the tendencies and many many many tasteless people out there who sadly hasn't the slightless of what good music is.

Ann Magnificent I discovered Garbage with version 2.0, when I was 12 years old and though they were insanely weird so dark the images of push it,freaky! then, I think I'm paranoid,the trick breathing,special, when I grow up, you look so fine,the world is not enough,made think of them as magnificent .But then In the gap between version 2.0 and Beautiful Garbage I discovered the Song ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS, and I knew more English then and though it was catchy,honest,sarcastic,and with and absolute and ridiculously beautiful music video and I would have to say that is my absolute top favorite song!

Ann Magnificent I discovered Garbage with version 2.0, when I was 12 years old and though they were insanely weird so dark the images of push it,freaky! then, I think I'm paranoid,the trick breathing,special, when I grow up, you look so fine,the world is not enough,made think of them as magnificent .But then In the gap between version 2.0 and Beautiful Garbage I discovered the Song ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS, and I knew more English then and though it was catchy,honest,sarcastic,and with and absolute and ridiculously beautiful music video and I would have to say that is my absolute top favorite song!
