You can never knock someone on getting a PB, but...I agree with others. More speed/threshold work, and OMG race more! 5Ks, 10Ks. You're training your butt off, but at the same time taking it so carefully and being so analytical that you're basically stuck in one place. "If you always do what you've always done/you'll always get what you've always got." Change things up, race more, take risks. Stop overthinking it.

    • @filipsvacha
      @filipsvacha 2 роки тому +1

well I think you are right about the speed work, but not with the races, if you are going for a marathon pr, or any pr in that matter, it is not a good idea to race, if you dont have to, because it crashes your traning block - you have to lower the load before and after the race to get a good result, otherwise you have to race slow, or you are putting more stress on your body, that you need to. Marathons are about the long long preperation beforehand.

QD: I brought down my half marathon time from 2:15hrs to 1:52hrs in the past year. I know it's strictly average compared to others, but happy to have achieved it. Thanks to you and all the inspiration from your daily vlogs!

QD: On this fine Sunday in Rotterdam, took down my PR over the marathon distance from 3:24:44 (solo) to 3:08:27 in my first official, in person marathon :-D A solid training block, tried and tested gear, sticking to the nutrition plan, a whole lot of motivation from the crowds, ideal weather conditions ... and of course, the inspiration I find in following your running journey, as well as that of many other DGR members around the globe! Keep sharing those stories!!

Hi Seth, I had a similar experience at the end of a trail 50k I did. On mile 30, I was passed by a 58 year old man (I'm 32) who was laughing while descending a hill. I told him he looked good for mile 30. He said he's just faking it better. He inspired me to get faster and fitter as I age. I'll never forget that moment!

Fantastic Seth👌just loved watching that. You looked so happy 👍🏻I ran a 17min 23 sec 5km at my local club time trial when I was 21 years old. I took a road trip and did the same time trial and route at the club a week after I turned 50 and ran 17:min 21 sec . It meant so much to me mentally considering the ups and downs life had thrown at me in between those years.

Hi Seth amazing effort in Rotterdam. My Dutch wife watched you run past her family home.
My most recent PB was the Manchester marathon last weekend. I finally broke 3 hours after 9 attempts. I got very close in Chicago 2019 and was sure 2020 was the year to break it. However at the start of the pandemic I had a heart attack aged 35. Cut to 2 years later and I finally achieved my running goal. It showed me the benefits of a positive attitude and a positive mental approach. 2 years ago I thought I’d never run again and was in a tough place but now I’m stronger than ever and just ran a 2:57!

QD: Hey Seth, congrats again on your huge PB! I raced my first marathon on Sunday at Rotterdam 🇳🇱. The goal was 3:29 and I did a 3:21 :) You inspired me to travel alone for the first time from 🇸🇬 and do my first race. I had similar experiences as you where crossing the bridge a second time seemed longer and steeper 😅 I also started hitting the wall right about 30k where my quads tightened up. I think the bridge played a huge part. My splits from 35k onwards were slower as I started cramping but the crowd made a huge difference in pushing me on. This first race has been a massive learning opportunity. I look forward to chasing down new PRs. Onward and upward!

QD: Chicago Marathon 2018. Two miles to go and on track to hit my goal time of sub 3 hours. When out of no where, double hamstring cramp! Fell backwards onto another runner (who stopped and stretched my hamstrings for me, legend), spent 15 min on the ground with various spectators and officials helping me stop the cramping. Walked/waddled to the finish line and finished quite a bit outside my goal. There’s always the next race!

Back in the day our coach would have us do 10 k race/ training during our marathon speed work. He/ she would tell us it would make marathon pace feel easier. Also midway through our marathon training block it would give us a better idea converting that 10 k time to what pace to head out on race day. They were correct. I’m almost 60 so my last Pr in the marathon was at 47 at the Eugene marathon. Second part of the my first Boston Qualifier I had leg cramps so bad at mile 22 that I was stumbling. I rehydrated and by mile 23 that finally went away. But that mile was hard watching my pace group get farther ahead.
Congratulations Seth you ran a great Pb!

About hitting The Wall: several years ago I was on pace for a sub-3:00 marathon in Washington state and headed into the aid station at Mile 21.5. But we arrived sooner than the volunteers and there were no fluids or gels. I carried nothing with me! Minimalist to a fault. Figured I’d just power through. About a mile later I slowly blacked out (like a light dimmer in a room) and fell down on the trail unable to move. Had a runner not come along a few minutes later and tossed a couple gels at me, I might still be laying there. My 2:58 turned into a 3:11. Always be prepared when it comes to race hydration and nutrition. Onward and upward!

I set out to do a 14km loop near my house and after 1km of warming up I felt particularly loose. There was a light drizzle and the conditions were perfect for running with respect to the temperature. hitting the wall, here in my home country portugal at the lisbon marathon some years ago, 32 degrees hot sun and a crazy straight line along the train station... it just smashed me to a point I had to walk, then a friend of mine a runner friend was following me with the marathon app and he lived nearby so he just came out and did like 8 kms with me pushing me and that was a life savior it got me and energized me through the end, it was my slowest marathon with almost 5 hours (not in your league I Know) but that companionship that is almost exclusive to us runners made it a truly remarkable one.

After 33 km, in my first and only marathon, I felt a huge cramp on my right harmstring that made me fall to the ground. The impact when hitting the ground made my left leg cramp up too. It was hurting like hell, but somehow managed to get to finish line walking and jogging. By the way, thanks for all the nice everyday content!

Qod1: San Antonio R&R marathon - violated all the rules. Tried a new drink thinking it was electrolytes because it had electrolytes - but it was an energy drink. Since I already chugged cold brew, my HR was through the roof at a moderate pace. My body shut down after 11 miles and I had to painfully jog/walk the rest of the way.
QOD: Woodlands HM march 5. Goal of 90minutes- went out at 7:05 pace for first 5k, settled into race, the last three miles were in the 6:40s. Finished at 1:30:18 (just missed it).
I started running march 2020 at the age of 40 with no history of running- around the same time I found your channel. I ran a HM around my neighborhood just because and it was a 1:48:44. So, I’ve come a good ways in a shortish period of time. I love the content and thank you for being so disciplined and consistent

Seth I am 100% with you regarding the 1st woman giving you a boost. I ran Manchester 10 days ago and after being well ahead of 3:30 pace I was really suffering from 18 to 21 miles and had slowed by 1 min/mile. Then the 3:30 pace group caught me and I got rush of adrenaline from the noise and support from that pack and picked my pace right back up and ended up finishing ahead of them after thinking I was done at 21 miles 👍

QD: I just ran my second half marathon this weekend and I PR'd 4 min with a 1:39:40. It was a similar experience to yours where it was my first time running with the pack. It gave me a boost thru my whole race till mile 11.5 when I had to threw up a bit but no wall was hit kept pushing all the way thru. Now I am looking forward to the next race where I can run with the pack and chase down some more fast times. Congrats on your PR Seth!!!! Thanks for all you do it means alot, butter to the bread. Cheers. 👟☕🧈💯🥇💯🧈☕👟

QD: 2mile PR today (pushing a jogging stroller btw)! I wasn’t even going to run this morning and then decided I’ll just do a easy mile loop. I started out easy but my legs felt light and quick so I just went for it. I was going to keep going and go for my 5k PR that I’m working on but my 1 year old (bday this past Saturday) said that’s enough 😝

I really have been focusing on road marathon PRs the last couple of years. In 18 months I've went from 3:33:47 in April 2021 to 3:29:53 in November 2021 to a 3:12:57 last weekend for a 17 minute PR over November. I'm very grateful for these improvements and thank you for always inspiring us.

  • @christopherwilliams2

I'm in my late 30s and I started running 18months ago. In Nov. 2021 my first marathon was 4hr:33m , then in Jan 2022 my second marathon PR came at 4hr:14m and my goal is to end 2022 under 4 hours. Thing is they've all been virtual races on my own but like Seth said, if I am in a competition with other runners alongside, I am sure I could fight through the lactic acid. As a dad of 4 with a full time job 2Hr. 22m might not be in my space...but I think that once you achieve your GOAL, that is what matters...and my 2:22 is 3:59.

QD: My last PR came in my 10K tuneup a couple of weeks ago (45:17), but I'm even happier with the PR I set in the half a week earlier. During a 15K threshold with about 4 miles of warmup/cooldown, I PR'd in the half by over a minute (1:45:14). That gave me great confidence that I can reach my goal of 1:41 in a full-race effort.

This weekend is my wall story, ran my first half marathon, planned so much for it. Pace, elevation, hydrations and nutrition. I had it all down and memorized. Maybe it about 8 miles and I realized the elevation map for the race must have been wrong! 3-4 more hills than expected and for elevation gain than expected. It too so much out of me mentally and physically. Crossing the finish line was amazing but the last couple of miles the legs and brain were done. I pushed through and finished but as much planning as I had my walk was when it all came down. Mental grit and remembering my training helped me push through!

Congrats on the PR. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on the diminishing returns on increased KM/miles per week. It’s something I’m yet to find a sweet spot on, but you increased your distance per week sacrificing family time etc chasing a goal, but for arguably marginal gains in time.
Where do you think the limits are, and importantly the sweet spot in distance per week for you where extra time is a “cost” on balance of life?
There is no perfect answer to this, cause everyone is different, but 160miles is elite level commitment against family time and longevity.

What if he have had some kind of fancy shoe as they are today with carbonplate and cussion and so on. How much does it in reality means to have these Nike or whatever running shoe or spike shoe on your feet when it really come to it.?? Inga DK:

QOD: 2008 Akron Marathon. Hit the wall at mile 19 and was also cramping. A kind police officer gave me a bottle of water out of his patrol car and I chugged it down while stretching out my hamstrings. One bonus from that race was that Brooks gave every runner a pair of shoes as part of the registration
