Excellent tutorial - very helpful for Revell/Airfix in particular with their shoddy plastic! Cheers Chris

Using this on certain panels would be a good idea. Even polishing to different levels on separate panels. Doing a uniform polish on the entire model would be reserved for a completely *polished* aluminum aircraft. Not as common to see a combat aircraft in such a state though. Bare aluminum isn’t like polished aluminum.

Exactly. I have a few shortcuts I take that in my opinion make it not only less work than masking and using different metal shades, but also give a more natural look. Using different mixes of smoke and black for the base gloss is one. Sanding different panels in different directions and/or levels of polishing. Rubbing a metal powdered pigment over certain panels but not all. That may be why I obsess over metal so much....so many different things to try.

Hi Terry, great demo. Have you tried using toothpaste or other compound substitutes?

Yes I have, and found them too scratchy. Kind of dulls the shine because the micro sized grit just isn't there.

Great video and channel, please keep up the good work. From the products on the bench i can get all 3 Tamiya compounds and both Meguiars. Which one would you recommend, my goal is to prepare and polish plastic for Tamiyas P-47 and P-51s?

Thanks so much for the comment! Remember the gradual increase of pressure so you don't end up putting tiny scratches in the plastic, but rather polish.

    Thanks, Terry. Really helpful.
I'm curious whether you have tried starting with a coarser polishing compound for plastics with lots of "micro scratches" like the Airfix? I agree that you will never get those scratches out starting with something as fine as Flitz, but it you started with something closer to the size of those micro scratches, do you have any better success? (Yes - I know - just buy better plastic rather than do the extra polishing work, but maybe Airfix is the only choice for your subject...)

Yes, I have started with Brasso earlier in the experiment as well as 800 sandpaper. They actually made things worse and made more work for me.

@@rebelroostermodeling6460 Guess that means you just can't polish a soft turd...
