The vocals grow on you, 90% of people who first hear death metal vocals are not gonna necessarily love it, but it definitely grows on you.

absolutely, I used to despise high pitched vocals, specially in metal stuff, I wasn't a big Death fan at first, but now the vocals are one of my favorite aspects of their songs lol

I’m not a Death Metal guy but Death is so amazing. Progressive which many death bands are not and his lyrics didn’t talk about Satan and doom but more about the human psychological conditions

Exception of ”Scream bloody gore” and ”Leprosy”. After that Chuck went on to human psychology with ”Pull the plug” on Leprosy to start the new Death style

In my personal opinion, Human is their best album. Perhaps you can try that out next.

Aggression, brutality, rawness, emotion. It’s not that they’re putting more emotion into their voices, it’s that they’re transporting you to a different musical realm. It strikes an emotional chord for me. Death Metal and other sub genres of metal like it are an escape from reality, almost inhuman sounds coming from human implements. It takes me away from daily life to a “better” place, and for whatever reason that better place is personified by demon noises 🤷🏻‍♂️

Band changed so much because Chuck changed it so much. He kicked people out constantly and always wanted to try something new and different. If you didn’t want to progress with him essentially you left the band or you got kicked out.
Death was Chucks band through and through. Was he a pain in the ass? Absolutely but I don’t know of any of the pst band members mad over that. Some just feel bad they couldn’t have evolved with him.
He was also a pain in the ass with touring he basically didn’t like being away from home so they’d cancel tours a lot. It got so bad Europe wouldn’t ever invite them back because they kept pulling out.
But no one hated Chuck they just got peeved over his bs at times lol.

I was a 14 yr old laying on my bed playing (get your filthy mind out of the gutter!) this album and following along with the lyrics. I love this album. This was my first Death album and I just gave it a try because it kept catching my eye in the store, till one day I bought it. Nobody introduced me to the band. It was thee most organic record purchase experience I ever had, and the whole album takes you on quite a journey. All the songs are masterpieces. It was the mid 90's when the internet was all dial-up hardly usable crap. Perhaps even before that...

A bonafide classic in the death and thrash realm, good on you for having a shot, so much back story to get behind in dealing with these types of bands, Death is a great example of a band truly progressing with the times and the hand they are dealt!

Death is just a fantastic band! It's like a nice Wyagu steak. Alot of love, thoght, time and emotion go into it. When you understand it its the meaning of life... not like most pop or radio music thats like mac and chees... crap made to consume and just give u fullfillment for a short while.

I have to agree with what a lot of people are saying. It's actually crazy because I remember the first time I heard Death I wasn't too keen on them because the vocal style and I thought Obituary sounded satirical and couldn't grasp death metal on the whole but over the years my taste has matured and Death Metal is my preference. Lyrically Chuck was a genius and instrumentally he has to be one of the all time great guitarists. He signed off brilliantly with his guitar work with Control Denied but I wish he'd lived long enough to see how iconic Death had become.

Very awesome man! The second half of their discography is more accessible for people who are less into death metal, esp The Sound or Perseverance. Their first three releases are a little bit more ‘meat and potatoes’ but still great death metal records that avoid some of the genre’s worst qualities.

If some of you don't know, Chuck always felt restricted with Death towards the end. He explored more musically in his other band before his death on 2001. They were called Control Denied. Check them out please. 🤟

One way to look at death metal vocals is to realize that they need to match the brutality of the music. When death metal bands introduce clean vocals, the heaviness and brutality of the entire thing is reduced significantly. Even though the vocal stylings may not be one's thing, they serve a purpose.
Perhaps the notion is easier to understand in reverse. Try imagining, say, Air Supply or Hank Williams with death metal vocals. It would simply be out of place and it would create an uncomfortable dissonance.

Chuck's vocals are my least favorite part of Death but that doesn't take away the fact Death is my favorite band. In the mainstream musical world, Chuck is one of the most underrated songwriters in the world. Death has used several different musicians showing Chuck always had an eye for talent. In many bands, if a member is replaced you can tell the difference if it's good or bad but Death kept chugging along and progressing. Chuck was heading into a more progressive sound and it showed with his last Death album and newer side project Control Denied. The world truly lost a great musician when he passed away and it still makes me sad thinking about it.
