Even though the 2000s were probably the lowest period in the c64 retro scene... that soon started to turn around in the 2010s and now today the scene is in full swing again! 😊
I was writing about these sorts of developments in a printed magazine back then. Firstly, Micro Mart (2002 - 2015) and then for a short while Retro Gamer.
BOFH is almost certainly inspired by the 1989-1991 Die hard games. The original was released on DOS in 1989 and was an EGA semi-3D game which was followed by the C64 version in 1990 which looked more like the older 1st gen Sierra AGI engine games. In 1991 NES version was released and it again changed the perspective to an overhead one and overall BOFH looks very similar to that one in both graphics and gameplay.
Some gems there for sure. Didn't know about 'BOFH', it looks great. Will definitely pick it up and give it a try. 'Newcomer' seems amazing. Can't see it available on Protovision's site and 'Ultimate Newcomer' seems to be at the 'In Development' stage since 2013. Seems like it'd be a good contender for today's larger cartridges vs multiple disks.
Yeah BOFH is really cool , Newcomer is on their site but no physical anymore you have to download it from csdb.dk A cart version would be better but i know theres issues with the amount of discs not really memory space but how it was programmed may make that impossible and Newcomer Ultimate seems like vapourware at this point so thus enhanced version is probably all we gonna get 👍
I think most of us were out of the scene when these games came out. Great deal of variety in all of those games and something for everyone to dive into. Good news for us they're getting better year by year and with the Eye of the beholder C64 version it just went on to show the machine still has more horse power to tap into. Great video as always👍
Great list. I had stayed with the C64 and got a lot of these on their original release. I'd probably add Zoo Mania, Berzerk Redux, and Kikstart C16 as some of my personal favourites from that decade. That's when RGCD started making their excellent cartridge titles too.
Nice top 10 list Brendan, enjoyed this very much. Knights n Grail would be my top game of this era. I never was able to get on with Newcomer - just wasn't able to progress very far in the game and the disk swapping is a bit of a chore. I think I am going to need to get some hints off you and give it another try!
Cheers , knights n grail is excellent it still play very well . I love RPGs so it had to be Newcomer , the disc swapping is insane and it takes a lot of patience but if you got infinite time its great , i could never play it now with a youtube channel 🤣🤣 it was one of the 1st games i played when i came back to the C64 scene . My only advice is make maps of the main prison and outlying areas otherwise you'll get know where , i dont know what happened to my original ones i made though 😭😭
Very good list, didn't know half of the games. That Wanted western game looked cool and fun! I thought Metal Dust would show up in the list, I think it's from that period? It however uses the superCPU, so you could argue it's disqualified... 😄
Uh, i bought Knights n Grails digitally as it came out.. until today i didnt manage to complete it.. shocked a bit about the fact, that it is allready so old🙈 Newcomer should become a easy to handle cart version 🙏🏻
Not that I would actually mind it being a top100, but I'm really glad this isn't a top100, because I'd be sitting and watching all of it. ^_^ ... oh, and sorry for giving the 65th Like. :-)
I'm trying to find a commodore 64 game Don't remember the name of it It had a guy with a red balloon in it I remember that and I remember there was a couple caves in the game and it said AC/BC on the caves It was kind of like a RPG game It was really fun Love that game I just wish I remember the name of it If anyone knows the name of this game please respond I would really appreciate it
Thats doesn't ring any bells but the C64 has over 10000 games so... Do you remember what company published it ?, that would make it pretty easy to find
BOFH is my favourite. It's nice to have a C64 game where one fights against ANTIFA and BLM on their way to take back control of Trump towers. It reminded me a lot of one of the mini games in Raid over Moscow. Always felt good to fight the commies on the commie.
It is so awesome seeing all of the productions produced in the last couple of decades.
Thanks and keep rocking BastithB.
Cheers , thx for watching
I also loved the conversion of the Vectrex game Fortress of Narzod which also came out around the same time as Spike
Yeah thats good as well 🕹️👍

Yeah it was ... I had to look hard to find these but after 2010 like you said it ramps up real quick 👍👍
Yeah, big time. So many new C64 games getting made. Loving it.

And the weird PC Engine one as well 😀👍

Yeah i was out of the scene when these came out so it was fun to research and play.
I love these lists for finding stuff to play on the mister, thanks bastich, another great video!
Awesome, hope you enjoy 🕹️👍
Love it. Some great new additions to my “must play” list.
Cool , enjoy 🕹️👍

Nice , never tried zoo mania , gonna have to take a look at that 🕹️👍
ace video chief - spike is something i never thought would be seen on a c64 - what a super game it is
Yeah its cool , they made 3 Vectrex ports and im gonna feature all of them in a single video at some point .
Great video again, thanks Brendan. Happy easter from Germany to Canada. 🐰
Cheers thx for watching and happy easter to you too 👍👍👍

Great list! I definitely want to give Escape from Arth a go.
Yeah there are some pretty interesting ones here 🕹️👍
Hi bastich.. lovely games here.. gotta look for the NEWCOMER game.
Yeah that's a pretty epic game , good stuff
Very good list, didn't know half of the games. That Wanted western game looked cool and fun! I thought Metal Dust would show up in the list, I think it's from that period? It however uses the superCPU, so you could argue it's disqualified... 😄
Yeah thats the reason its not here , its a bit unfair comparing it against regular C64 games.
I have to get some of those games. Thank you! 😃
😀🕹️👍
We keep waiting for Ultimate Newcomer, which has promised NTSC support, among other things. EasyFlash support, etc.
Yeah i think its vapourware at this point but who knows
Some nice classics.
😀🕹️👍

Yeah i believe Newcomer is too big for a cart , its 12 or 13 double sided discs !!
Some great games on display.
😀🕹️👍
Great Video!, where can I watch the arcade video? is it just a trailer or it's already available on your channel?
Its already available here 👇
ua-cam.com/video/v8rhq5YKJPg/v-deo.html
I had no idea they were still making games from that time period.
Yeah they never really stopped at any point but this 10 year stretch was pretty lean but after 2010 it goes into overdrive for some reason 🤣👍
@@BastichB64K I thought it went kaput in the 90s, lol.
Glad to hear it didn't. 😂🙌
@@TheRetroManRandySavage oh yeah it did 🤣 but people still continued to make games though
Not that I would actually mind it being a top100, but I'm really glad this isn't a top100, because I'd be sitting and watching all of it. ^_^ ... oh, and sorry for giving the 65th Like. :-)
🤣👍
If C64 games were to come on a brand new format, which would you choose?
C64 games on Minidiscs
C64 games on Laserdiscs
C64 games on Iomega ZIP disks
Laserdiscs , i can just imagine the awesome retro game art for the covers 👍👍
@@BastichB64K Also, imagine how awesome a C64 Laserdisc drive would be, with the C64 system parked in front of it and a 1702 monitor perched atop it!
NONE of the above! Maybe C-64 games on SDHC card?

Cool game , it was a pleasant surprise to find this one .
