  • Hello and welcome to the 6th episode of TOP 50 Commodore 64 (C64) games in under 10 minutes.
Although the 1989 could well be considered one of the "later years" in 8-bit gaming, I was surprised to see that there were still many fantastic games released for the C64.
Batman: The Movie, Cabal, Curse of the Azure bonds, Might and Magic 2, Gauntlet 2, Robocop, Test Drive 2 and Newzealand story are just a few of the titles released in 1989 for the C64.
Games are, as always, presented in no particular order.
Have fun and let us know in the comments if you agree with our choices (and if we missed a title that should be on the list).

Thanks for putting this together. I had my c64 from 1983 -1988 when I switched to 16 bit Amiga. it's fun to discover the games I missed and can now relive today.

I watched the previous years' versions of these videos and in all of them I can say I played at least half the games, in some almost all the games... watched this one I guess it was when I had to go with an IMB PC as I started going to a tech school in 1988 to learn programming. For this year I recognized only 5 games out of the 50 that I had played.

I got my first PC quite late in 91 (AT 286/VGA). So I was "stuck" with ZX Spectrum from 85 to 91. I did learn to program on the Speccy though, so it was worth it, and I did love that small black rubbery-keyed machine :)
Played C64 with my cousin who owned one. And it was also a great machine.

89 was the year it was clear the C64 was on its way out. The Genesis and NES were killing it for action and arcade ports, and EGA pcs were for your strategy rpg, and flight sims. Once VGA became the norm? It was all over for our beloved little machine. But we remember the good times. And giggle now knowing we can effectively play the best version of anything now with a quick internet search and a download or two.

1989 was a very good year for C64 games. I loved the High-Res sprites like in Dragon Ninja and Games like Batman - The Movie, Project Firestart, Power Drift, Stunt Car Racer, New Zealand Story, Hard 'n' Heavy and so on were really good and also often had great music and sound as well as graphics for the C64... . My first two C64 games on disk were Batman The Movie and Moonwalker. Although the first level of Moonwalker was somewhat boring and I didn't like the Movie with Michael Jackson, this game in my opinion was very underrated. It was really playable until the end but not too easy, had very different levels and great graphics and music for a C64-game. Compared to Indiana Jones 3 for the 64, which I got for Christmas in 1989, it wasn't even a contest which game was the better one. There were many more classics I played back then, for example Last Ninja 1 and 2, Iron Lord, ZakMcKraken and Maniac Mansion, Airborne Ranger by Microprose, Microprose Soccer (which was done by Sensible Software who later created Sensible Soccer and Cannonfodder for the Amiga), Double Dragon 2 which is shown here was a great conversion for the 64, R-Type was great too, some titles from Germany like Turrican or Rock 'N Roll. There were so many great games out there in 1989 for the Commodore 64 and I think back then the computer reached its peak while the Amiga had its first really good year. I went to the Amiga 500 then in 1990 I think, but played games on the C64 from 1985 onwards, often with friends from school and we played all the classics like the "Games"-series from Epyx, Yie Ar Kung Fu, International Karate (+), Rocket Ranger, Defender Of The Crown, Falcon Patrol, Blue Max, Hostages, Test Drive, Pirates!, Gunship! and many many other great games. Good old times. They continued on the Amiga back then and I later bought an Amiga 1200 with a Hard Drive and later additional RAM, a bigger Hard Drive and a CD-Drive from my first owned money which I had to work hard for during the school holidays. It was a good machine and I stayed with that system until 1998, when I earned regular money and first got me a PS1 and then a PC. I even nowadays play some C64 games as well as Amiga games with Emulators. And also DOS games. There were so many great classics in the 80s and 90s. Those were good days (and often nights, especially when it came to strategy games...).

I put so many hours into several of those games - Curse of the Azure Bonds, Grand Prix Circuit, Laser Squad, Space Rogue, Bushido. First Strike is a forgotten gem, so much better than the official Afterburner conversion...

Street Rods was a lot of fun with those classic cars. Test Drive 2: The Duel was a good game. Rampage was too much fun. Loved eating the people.

TD2 was great - played it a lot back in the 80s.
And Rampage... was an interesting one for sure :)

I've been looking for a C64 version of Lode Runner. It was graphically pretty ugly, but the game play was addicting enough that I would still play it 40 years after the fact. I've found browser versions of it, but they just seem 'off'.

As I mentioned in the notes below the video, I was quite surprised how many fantastic games were still released for C64 in 1989.
So, agreed, another great year for C64 gaming :)

Come on bro, Rampage was released in 1987.

    • @retrononame
      @retrononame  2 місяці тому

I don't know why I included this. It is clearly a mistake as I also included it into the 1987 part (which is the correct year for Rampage).
I noted all things you pointed out (Nebulus and this) and will fix them when I do a "remaster" of these "Top 50" videos (I will revisit these lists sometime in the future as I also need to fix the aspect ratio of the earliest Top 50 videos as well).
Thanks for watching and for pointing out my mistakes. It's appreciated!

This video shows C64 games that were released in 1989 ;)
      Thanks for watching!
