As a GS Main I appreciate you acknowledging tackle is not the answer to everything. Tackle is a phenomenal tool for the weapon, but over-reliance on it is a problem. That said, there are options that while I can understand why you didn't mention as they are more technical and weapon specific: some weapons do have attacks that allow you to reposition that are not GPs or don't necessarily grant you i-frames. Longsword and Swaxe have fade slashes and morphing fade slashes, Greatsword has jumping side slash and the slap out of a roll tackle will also push you forward. Charge blade can do the sliding slash (which does have a GP, but can be used merely for repositioning) out of a lot of things and relocate that way if needed, and SnS can advancing slash if you're willing to exhibit that discipline you mentioned in not greeding too hard. This is not an exhaustive list, but it's ways I try to maintain damage while staying out of harm's way--getting chip hits on a monster relocating is better than merely avoiding taking damage. I've gotten many a trip off of a jumping side slash into a leg that let me wind up into a tail cut TCS. In addition to that, many weapons have slinger bursts, and granted you're using stronger pods, those can outright cancel the charge attack and give you time to better position, maybe even net a ko. For GS and CB this is a particularly strong option, as you can wind up into meting some hits while the monster recoils. I understand there's degradation to the pod effect, so it should not be the first option always, but it should be one to consider. Another fringe option I've used is plain cluching to a different part of the monster to avoid the attack and get a soften someplace else while it's running around. This is applicable to any number of attacks on all kinds of monsters if you're keen eyed enough. For example, you'll be completely safe to soften the wings on a rath tail flip. Definitely not saying this is the best option, least of all for newer players, but it's an option.
Fun fact: Divine Blessing can activate during tackles, too! A GS build that has Divine Blessing and some form of regen can tackle through stuff all day every day~
Oh yeah, the damage mitigation does stack, but there is definitely some stuff you really shouldn't tackle, and especially for newer players or people without endgame gear and like, stun res 3, I wouldn't recommend tackling everything. Heck, I have stun res 3 and divine blessing secret and I still respectfully only tackle things I know are worth the trade. Some monster attack follow-ups are faster than, or will interrupt, follow up tackles or attacks, and you need to be mindful about where the tackle recoil will place you. I wouldn't say "all day, every day" but against certain weaker attacks, or against things like (normal) rajang somersaults, it's a good retort.@@xaldynnemo47
To be fair, the vertical hitboxes are only really a huge issue in Rise, and the aerial evade does have i-frames that increase with both evade window and white extract, so yeah unless you’re playing Rise or the monster is just really tall, evasion via ascension is perfectly viable.

While you're correct on the best defensive options, the game rewards GP's heavily on a few weapons. Prediction or anticipation is a huge part of MH and often foresight or other counters can yield more favorable results. That said Greed or just reckless abandon is the main killer in MH. Glad you're making these. The new comers need these resources, and we all could use the refresher from time to time.
great tips, however for charge blades guard point is the best option because the sword to axe morph is an instant guard point and gives an extra point in guard so you get knocked back less
@@naota909 Except in Rise-Sunbreak where they give you Counter Morph Slash that works as instant GP in Axe Mode while also giving you phial damage bonus if you follow up with SAED/AED. Though it does suck when you miss the GP as the move is very slow.
an enraged rathian will always do lots of charged attack by the way. And once she does one, she'll do an additional two, always. just a quick tip on rathian to keep in mind! :)
I think it'd be useful to mention when the monster is most likely to use the charge attack. Like does hunting by yourself (no palicos/tailriders) have the monster use it less since it won't be targeted farther allies? Or does it use the attack because it's one of the only attacks it has that targets slightly in front of their legs?
I realize how similar MH is to a fighting game tbh, but it's a 3D action game. And it's slower paced for the most part (depending on weapon) than actual fighting games.

Insect Glaive corollary: you're going to get hit by an infinite vertical hitbox if you try to vault so forget it.
Side Note: one of the promotional videos of 4U showcased an IG vaulting over a charging Rathian.

morph slash GP is essentially a standard guard (#3), but still requires timing

As a Gen1 -> World player I found all versions of rathian to be extremely easy and was wondering why that was.
As a new player to mhw, he becomes so easy after a bit of practice. Maybe because his action are more predictable imo
