This is the approach I took when trying to learn charge blade. No matter how good a tutorial, if someone has used a weapon long enough to make it, they understand the basic kit so well that it becomes second nature; they may forget others don't know terminology or what attacks are. Trying to learn a weapon from a tutorial with no time poking at it is a bit like trying to study a book written in a similar language but not knowing all of the words.
The only thing I'd add is, after either spending time in the training room or watching a tutorial, take the weapon to a good sensei monster. Something like Rathian is great for trying out a new weapon, as while she isn't super dangerous, the poison and fireballs are still enough of a threat to be mindful about avoiding. Alot of her attacks are well choreographed, which will give you time to apply experimental uses of moves in anticipation of where a hitbox will be on a moving target, something the training area won't give you. Doesn't have to be her, but pick a monster you feel confident about your knowledge of it's attacks. A monster is not going to stay in place, and it's not going to be free. You can fill gauges real easy in the training room, but it won't be the same when the monster is trying to nip and claw you.
I do suggest Rathian as the intro/warmup test hunt also because, a target that can fly will incentivize you to think about what attacks you can use to hit a target up high, which many people new to a weapon tend to lack, and while she gets air, it isn't anywhere near as long as Rathalos or especially Azure. As an aside, when I get comfortable and want to find my blindspots or shortcomings on a weapon, I bring it into a Fatalis fight. You'll know if you're lacking something because Fatalis will ABSOLUTELY expose it to you.

I've been watching videos from others whom cover mh and honestly you're doing the real service.
Nothing in your vids warrant into a copy pasta build or the "Bestest builds" which is amazing. I'm second fleet hunter and I've been watching videos since 2013 ish and your videos are top quality in comparison to the rest for sure.
Most the ppl I see watching others videos on mh... always be trying to use the MOST SWEETY builds that they have absolutely no idea how it works or even the basics.... which nobody EVER COVERS THE BASICS.

The training room is probably the quietest but largest addition they could have made. Old Monster Hunter it would take months for me to figure our everything a weapon could do or the best way to use it. But now its so easy to work out the moves and combos and figure when and where you can use certain attacks. Hell my Swaxe usage in 3U was exclusively Sword mode X then A, overhead then uppercut repeat, because in battle I had no way of figuring out how useful side slashes were or if the Axe was even worth not having Phial damage.

I'm usually pretty good at every game I play. I learn fast, and memorize controls basically instantaneously. Because the controls part isn't a problem for me, I jumped right into guides whenever I wanted to learn a new weapon. Go into the training room and practice for a bit. Then I go into a hunt. After I've gotten more familiar with the weapon in actual hunts I'll then go and watch speedruns with the weapon. I've tried every weapon type in the game, and I can honestly say I main 5 different weapons at this point, and can play each of them to an advanced level. Outside of just those 5 I can also play all the other weapons to a proficient degree, I just have my preferences.
It's really fun being able to play so many weapons really well. I have certain monster matchups that I particularly enjoy playing certain weapons in. It makes the game so much more enjoyable rather than being a one trick. I've seen some terrifying guildcards of people with like 3000 hunts on just longsword with 0 on every other weapon. I don't understand how they can just play the one thing for that long and never even try anything else.

    • @RanchDressingPop-Tarts

Because they really enjoy playing that weapon and might be pursuing mastery. There’s a difference from being a 500 hunt “advanced” weapon user to having thousands of hunts with one weapon. You keep getting better with your weapon of choice even if you feel you already know it well enough.
The cliche “jack of all master of none” is applicable here

    • @chewbacachunks8644
      @chewbacachunks8644 11 місяців тому +1

@@RanchDressingPop-Tarts I have actually mastered all my preferred weapons. I've seen plenty of people in this game with tons of hunts under their belt just chugging potions or just not using their weapons very well. Most of the time that I play in multiplayer I'm basically the only person that keeps up tenderizes, extends claggers, and flinch shots. Unfortunately it's kind of a rarity instead of the norm to play with people that even take advantage of the games mechanics. And those things aren't even weapon specific. Jack of all trades, master of none definitely applies to some people, but not to me. You don't need 3000 hunts to master something.
Hell I started sort of casually speedrunning ruiner nergigante with hunting horn and my fastest time is only like 1 minute of the record with it. I could probably get closer but the record uses a heroics builds and I haven't done that yet. Back around when Alatreon launched I did a similar thing. I speedran him with SnS and actually got a time 1 minute off what was the record at the time. I haven't ran it since then though and the time has come waaaay down since then. I've been wondering how well I could do now that fatalis weapons and velkhana gamma exist. I could definitely kill him before his 1st escaton judgement even without heroics. But if you want a competitive time you have to use heroics.

@@chewbacachunks8644sorry chief, but no matter how fast you think you learn or how great you perceive yourself to be (even though your observation of other people's skill seems to be based on some matchmaking randoms you saw drink potions in a fight), there is a difference between 200 hunts and 2000 hunts with one weapon. I'm not someone who sticks entirely with one weapon either but I guarantee I will beat you at literally anything with my main weapon because I've invested significantly more time into using it against every single monster. I will know every tiny opening, make small positioning changes, pull off more efficient combos, make harder reads and overall just play better because I've done it so many more times. Even if you are a legitimate gaming savant and can learn much faster than other people, the factor at which that happens is not >10 lol. You are not 10x better than the average person, and cannot perform at the level of a true master with 10% of the experience (the example used in previous comments).
You even admit it yourself - you prefer different monster match-ups to be done with different weapons. Of course there's a tool for every job, but not choosing the best option for each monster means you get to know your weapon AND that specific, unfavorable match-up that much better. There's a long period of skill plateau - in literally anything, not just gaming - between solid proficiency and mastery, which is probably where you are. Dunning-Kruger tends to be the strongest around that point. When I became strongly conversational in my 2nd language, I thought I was fluent. When I could get through Sekiro bosses on a new character without dying once, I thought I was a beast. Turns out there was a whole ton of vocabulary and weird niche language rules left to learn, and I knew the bosses patterns but my efficiency was actually just decent compared to people who were actually great. It's just silly to think that you could take your 200 LS hunts into the same situations as someone with 2000 LS hunts and somehow match them on any level... Maybe specific monsters with specific builds, but you simply haven't mastered it to the same extent against EVERY monster - and that's the difference between you, the jack of many trades, and someone who is a master.
That one minute difference in WR speedrun times is far, far bigger and speaks far louder than you seem to understand. Try lowering that time to the actual WR (TA rules of course) and you'll realize how long and painful the battle for each extra second is.
It's cool to be good enough with every weapon, I think I am too, but you just come across as conceited, snarky and objectively wrong when you try to convince people you're better than someone who has practiced a weapon 100x more than you. You're welcome to post some videos though..

@@ScentSense I never stated that I was the best. Nor was I trying to make it into a competition. All I was saying was that it doesn't matter how long you play the game. All that matters is if you put in the time and practice. I never tried to be the best. I just kept going untill I reached a level I was satisfied with. What I said about seeing people with thousands of hunts and seeing them perform poorly is true. I have also seen plenty of people with much less time than that perform very well. When I did those Speedruns I wasn't doing them with the intent to compete on the leaderboard. I just wanted to improve my play. So I watched some Speedruns, did a few tries, got a time I was satisfied with and stopped. It's all for fun. I'm not saying that all weapon loyalists that have thousands of hunts on one weapon are bad at the game. In fact I've only really played with like 2 or 3 people that played badly despite their playtime. Usually they actually end up being extremely good at the game. It was really only a few instances I was talking about. I admit I probably should have mentioned that before.

When you do watch a guide be careful and don’t find one where the dude modded the game to change how weapon works. There’s a dude making switch axe videos who literally got exposed for using cheat engine for speed runs years ago making new guides who runs with a mod to make the sword and axe transition basically have no animation so they can swap standing still without attacking for fast mode changes.

Recently i learned 9 weapons in MHWI and instantly hopped to beating fatalis with them after 10 mins of practice, in order all boiled down to:
    -Where to position yourself.
-Which are my common combos (1, 3, 5 and "monster on the ground" combos)
-Trying to never be animation locked when the monster starts attacking even if i lose damage.
    -Clutch claw timing
-Weapon gimmicks (Bar filling, vial charging, stamina depleting, range matching shennanigans)
An even with that, the weapon is only one quarter of this game, you can compensate with practice against the monster, knowledge, and experience with your weapon.

It's easier when you know the monster. Say you main greatsword and know an opening with it vs velkhana, you can use that opening with the new weapon with moves that has same duration.
If you dont know the monster well, you will take longer to understand what combo is good at what opening.

if you want to practice with less skills do regular quests with a more simple build. Arena quests are supposed to be a challenge and they aren’t inherently a better way to learn a weapon. If the build in an arena quest is much worse than what you’d normally be playing with you aren’t getting much out of it. I remember a few quests in Rise had switchaxe without rapid morph for example, there’s no reason to practice without rapid morph because you can always have it and always want it on a switchaxe build.

Some people won't learn better from reading necessarily and seeing moves used in a video guide or used a certain way in a speedrun can give visual reinforcement to how to use the move and when you would want to use it.
