University Challenge S46E09 Open vs Salford

- This week's episode features probably the oldest team that I`ve seen: Open University with average age of 52. Their opponent from Salford, in contrast, is significantly `younger` at 34. The teams are actually quite decent, but I`d suggest the producer put some kind of cap to the average age lest this programme turns into a faster-paced Egghead or Only Connect. About 35 is enough. For older contestants, we already have the Christmas series. Original air date 5.9.2016
I detect a certain degree of ageism in some of the comments here. Last time I checked, Open University qualifies as a genuine university, and the programme is called 'University Challenge', not 'University Challenge for the Under 30s Only'
That's all well and good, but don't you think if you've been around twice as long and had twice the life experience and time to accumulate knowledge, you're at an immediate _advantage_ over kids in their early _twenties?_ That's not ageism, it's expecting a fairly level playing field.
Perhaps, though obviously depends on the person and the life lived (quality vs quantity argument). On the other hand, speed of recall and mental agility in general are essential in this game, and I think (again generalizing), I'll give the advantage there to the young guns. So, on balance, I don't see this as necessarily unfair. After all, if I'm not mistaken, in one of the early series a team of professors were soundly beaten by their students!
The fact is ordinary universities can have post-grads and mature students in their UC teams anyway. So there's as much chance of wise old fogeys bringing our their greater learning and life experience there too.
Memorandom everybody has some degree of advantage, starting with intelligence and spanning first language and socioeconomic status. If you win you win, and let the losers whine about supposed advantages.
@@rramsey7213 So by that logic, do you think your 20-year-old self or your current self would do better?
Applying for Aeronautical Engineering at Salford and seeing someone else who's done it makes me so happy!
I'm flattered, we were "quite decent" haha
Hilarious!
"Ow do ? I`m Robert White...and I`m `tekin` Civil Engineering."
Live long, and prosper Rob. `Nothing but love for the bloke that never forgets his roots.
@Tom Sanders And lost that ridiculous hat. It is merely attention seeking.
He's merely craving attention, but is an inverted snob. He thinks he's "edgy". Lots of them around.@@andrea22213
Mitchell and Crawford! Thanks for posting this fun episode so quickly!
Thank you for uploading this. Very much appreciated.
My physics teacher from year 10 is on here wth 😭😭
This comment section is actually the most insufferable and pretentious thing I've literally ever seen...
Ha ha, a prime example being your own comment.
Notwithstanding the age advantage, I believe the Open elders have done exceedingly well. To be fair
to them they have answered some of the toughest questions on this show. Well done, Open.
Christmas series is for Alumni. I don't see a problem here.
Crawford completely dominated this entire episode. He's eerily intelligent.
He was my physics teacher at school. Absolute legend.
That is so awesome!
Misanthropy and Puppers no joke he is my physics teacher 😂
Misanthropy and Puppers
He’s my physics teacher now and I’m watching this with him
Seem unable to see either of the women contribute anything at all. They seem immediately to turn to the men for answers.
...what is the point of having a "no conferring" rule if it isn't upheld? The infringement at 23m 51s is a shocker...
I thought Open University was great. I loved having some older scholars impress me. Plus, as someone from the U.S., I studied the Open University as an innovation in access to higher education.
That must be a record-breaking average age for this show :P
I think Banks did a great job. Well done.
Paxman's pronunciation of atenolol and bisoprolol hurt my heart.
He's done worse by me.
White wore a teapot cover. WHY?
1:21 Rob lost £218,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when guessing the answer to an extremely-hard question.
They won't let me link the video, so search - Rob Mitchell loses £218,000
'Innocence'? Is that two words, Wakefield?
That fucking hat...
Teapot cover.
do they get the general topics or do they just have to learn everything?
2nd Australia of the series yay!!
Kinky boots
Mitchell looks like an older Harrison Ford :D
Well, Harrison Ford is 78, so he can't be too much older.
Wearing a hat on university challenge. It's just not right.
i thought he looked funky
who gives a rats ass ???
Look at the average age across the series, please. Posting appreciated; asinine wittering, not so much. Dames (49)
A boring, bland episode indeed.
THE OPEN women were absolutely USELESS.
a bit like you then
OMG geriatric challenge
The main appeal of university challenge is that the contestants are university aged... not very enjoyable
In other words, any age.
Middle aged people on Uni Challenge is just disgraceful. Middle-aged people are supposed to be highly knowledgeable; it's nothing extraordinary. This is not in the spirit of University Challenge. Like a 50 year old running in a child's egg and spoon race. The contestants should be ashamed.
you can never stop learning yo
'Middle-aged people are supposed to be highly knowledgeable'. Afraid that's a questionable statement. The many incompetent and sometimes stupid people in the Civil Service, education, etc., are invariably middle-aged.
plenty of middle aged idiots too. age has no bearing on knowledge
James II?! Clearly, he meant James II and VII. Very poor indeed. Misleading question, and incredibly ignorant of English and Scottish history. Better is expected of university Challenge! Thumbs down.
Very impressed by the Open University. However, Adamson was not punching her weight - which frankly would be impossible.
David M good thing your personal appearance is a model of human perfection, otherwise one might accuse you of being a judgmental prick.......
Bet she's out your league
